The old fashioned way was quicklime. I don't know what it is, other than a lime product. I doubt it is available now without license, security, firstborn, etc. The old lime mortar was quicklime, with water added to make hydrated lime. Hydrated lime is what is sold now for mortar and other uses. Quicklime would be a strong base, similar to lye. Two weeks ago, we noticed a dead raccoon on the edge of the pavement. This is the season, so... it sat there and I expected it to stink very bad in the hot sun and humidity. Nope. Five days latter, the bones were stripped white and the flesh had dissolved, no bugs, no maggots, no odor. I am thinking someone put some sort of chemical on the carcass and dissolved the flesh - perhaps that is a new critter control technology being employed by the County? Probably a moot point if you ran away: The steering slop at 20-30 years can be in the coupling between the steering gear and the steering shaft. It has rubber reinforced with cord to take up the shock. The rubber disintegrates. Went to see a '78 240D 4-speed (W123) advertised on CL. Pretty good cosmetic shape but some weird things compared to other 123s I've driven. Steering was extremely loose, is this the infamous left-hand-threaded steering box bolt that needs to be tightened? The seats were an odd vinyl-cloth mix, sides Tex as usual, but the fabric in the center was not the usual Euro scratchy tweed but a smooth satiny material with a sort of herringbone pattern. The clutch and master cylinder were new, according to the seller, and the clutch seemed to have about half an inch of engagement range, right at the top of the pedal travel. The shifter had none of that notchy feel that I associate with German cars, but was really loose and sloppy---the proverbial broomstick in a barrel of rocks. Combined with the feeling of barely adequate torque and no power, it was more than a little like driving a VW microbus. Seller had some weird ideas he'd picked up from the 240D nuts online. For example, the car was riding on 205/70R14s on the stock wheels (for better ground clearance---it's two inches higher this way!), and he said that although he was afraid to try it everyone says you should burn the clutch when starting out on a 240D... by which he meant that on every takeoff you should floor the accelerator, then at redline gradually let out the clutch to accelerate, slipping it all the way like a motorcycle. Climate control was wonky, too, despite being the famously reliable manual 240D system! The blower fan barely worked, A/C didn't (later found out the belt was gone), there was a strong smell of coolant at all times, and the temperature sliders didn't do anything---there was full heat all the time. Seller thought that was normal. You control the heat with these! (indicating the twist open/shut feature of the side dash vents). (Never mind that there was hot air coming out the foot vents regardless.) All in all rather disappointing. [MBZ] 1983 Mercedes 300D Hard Starting / AC Issue.
Hi All, Part 1 - Last week I had some trouble with my 1983 300D, it would start as usual but run a little rough (popping like it was having trouble getting air). After a few minutes it would smooth out but run a little hotter than usual. A few days later the ac compressor started making noise, the clutch stopped engaging and the air blew warm. I am in the process of deciding whether to replace the compressor now or next spring. Part 2 - Yesterday it took me 10 minutes to start the car, I ran the battery down and even needed a jump. Black smoke was coming out of the exhaust while I was chanking the engine. The glow plug light appears normal going out after a few seconds. Eventually it started , ran rough for a couple of minutes than ran normal. This morning the same exact issue with extremely hard starting. Here are my questions: Could the ac compressor issue be related to the hard starting? I disconnected the wires to the compressor but I still hear a squeaking noise from it occasionally. Should I remove the belt from the compressor to lighten the drag on the engine if the compressor is hanging up? Could that have anything to do with the hard starting? If these issues are unrelated any suggestions on troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Re: [MBZ] OT - Dissolved Raccoon
There was a dead raccoon up next to the road by the driveway a week or so ago, figured the vultures would be around to clean it up pretty quick, but I think because it was right next to the road they were smart enough to leave it there. It stunk for a coupla days then it sorta dried up and is still there, what's left of it. A cat got run over a day later right next to it, but then got run over a few more times and became one with the pavement. The vultures are good on the deer mostly, they'll have most of one gone in a day or two if it is far enough off the side of the road. I was taught to pull away from a stop on a bike by revving up about 1/3 to 1/2 into the rev range, then gradually releasing the clutch and modulating the throttle as you gain speed, in order to avoid the sudden throttle application at low speeds that often will make a cold carbureted engine stumble or even die. Re: [MBZ] 1983 Mercedes 300D Hard Starting / AC Issue.
I am in the process of deciding whether to replace the compressor now or next spring. You need a bit more diagnosis than that, first. Should I remove the belt from the compressor to lighten the drag on the engine if the compressor is hanging up? Yes, try that. You should be able to spin the hub of the compressor by hand, without odd noises. Likewise the pulley should be able to be spun easily, also without odd noises. Your car doesn't have a belt-saver device, so if the compressor has seized, or nearly so, there should be noise whenever it tries to operate. Do NOT operate it if it is making seizure noises, you're just pumping shrapnel into the AC system. This is very hard to remove and can kill the next compressor quickly. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Five days latter, the bones were stripped white and the flesh had dissolved, no bugs, no maggots, no odor. I am thinking someone put some sort of chemical on the carcass and dissolved the flesh - perhaps that is a new critter control technology being employed by the County? And because you can work on your own car and know how to judge a $1,000 car. For value my $400 240D has been hard to beat. I figured when it finally died I had about $2500 in it and I'd driven it 25,000 miles. I'm slowly getting some of that investment back (didn't have to buy a new exhaust for the '78 for instance and the scrap weight when it finally leaves) so it was quite economical to have around. [MBZ] OT: 2002 Ford Focus (Zetec motor) attempting to change spark plugs
The plugs seem to be seized in the head. They sit in deep wells that look like they would be prone to water collecting, though they were dry when I pulled the cables off. I have them soaking in my favorite acetone/ATF mixture... but how much torque can I reasonably apply before I risk stripping threads or breaking the plug? Using first a normal 3/8 socket wrench, and then with a short pipe extension on the handle, I have been unable to break them free so far. Re: [MBZ] $1000 car
Gump was $120. I got 60k miles on her, spent $2k, drove 6 years. He'll of a lot better investment than some cars. Will get at least that much as scrap, and have sold enough parts off her to cover a few tanks of fuel. [MBZ] Power Steering Fluid
It appears I throw nothing away. Which is why I have run out of room in the garage. Gotta get rid of some things. Let's start with PS fluid. I have about a dozen bottles, various brands. Never used even one. (Please don't ask why I acquired them). They are the one size fits all type, claiming they are compatible with all PS units. Y'all have taught me not to believe that. It goes against my instincts to just throw things out, like normal people do. So, does anyone know of an alternate use for these products, other than burning them is a diesel engine? (Chain saw oil, thread cutting oil, killing ants/termites, compost pile, ANYTHING?) Will they be valuable one day? Your thoughts? Most petroleum fluids are hydroscopic, so chances are they have already absorbed enough water to make then worthless :D -Rolf On 8/24/2011 11:22 PM, Jerry Herrman wrote: It appears I throw nothing away. Re: [MBZ] 1983 Mercedes 300D Hard Starting / AC Issue.
If the compressor is seized does that usually mean the freon is contaminated with metal fragments? Yes. The R4 seems to be particularly prone to this, I think it's because the pistons are teflon-coated. (???) You can remove the outlet hose and wipe your fingertip, or a Q-tip, in it and see. Flush, and use a filter on the suction side.

Wife says if I sell the 85 I can get a truck. Very practical of her I have decided. I believe a unimog will fit the bill and perhaps fill a hole in my heart that my motorcycling days have left. Apparently you can get a 404 s for a reasonable sum these days. Any mog owners on the list? I would not want the Mog as a daily driver. Too rude and crude. And slow. And the tires are expensive.
