Exactly. I let my son put way too mush money into an '87 300D and the
conversion of a 190D from auto to standard because he learned a lot. He had
no interest in helping me work on my cars and learning from that. He was
VERY motivated when it was his car. Well worth every penny.

I gotta agree with Dave. Education is never really free. Too many kids
(people under 50) know the square root of nada about things (including cars,
plumbing, electricity, etc) and never have the incentive to learn or try.
Harness his current curiosity, ego, bravado, or whatever it is so he'll
learn something potentially useful in life. Worst case he hauls it all to
the crusher. Just be sure he works safely, like good jack stands on a good

Think of it as just it a bigger Leggo kit.

Failure is not fatal. Encourage the kid to experiment to his hearts content.
If he kills the engine, get over it. Too many people never achieve greatness
because they lack confidence or are afraid of failing. I'm involved with the

I'd prepare him by laying out some ground rules - if you kill it plan on

Re: [MBZ] Boost Gauge

2012-06-23 Thread Rolf

Suddenly, the dark lord appears.

Pistons melt at 1300 give or take. He won't be doing that without lots
more air and fuel. To temper his wants, let him know a modified pump
will run atleast $1200. Bigger injectors will do nothing, he's clearly
been influenced by the "wrong" crowd.

Over 13 psi will not reduce the life of the engine, however 13 psi with
the stock turbo is just a heat pump and will.

Nothing wrong with a boost gauge, it's a quick way to determine when
your wastegate hose has rotted from age and your overboost pressure
switch is gummed up from the EGR.

I agree with Rick however, chasing down a 617 for power is throwing good
money after a bad idea. He should start off with a 60x, the cross flow
head will get him more power stock (turn a few screws) than the 617 will
pretty much ever get.

Well I'm not going to go that far. Right now we have a diesel
Mercedes, a gasoline Mercedes, and a gasoline Chevy van. It would be nice
to update the diesel Mercedes, but with things the way they are right

Re: [MBZ] Boost Gauge

2012-06-23 Thread Dan Penoff
I am dealing with a 19 year old who wants to dump money into a $5000 2005 Ford
Focus with 170k on the clock.

Fortunately, he's a skinflint, so his own limitations will prevent him from
putting more into the car than it's worth.

For the time being, I'm helping him do little mods here and there that are
relatively inexpensive and easy to reverse, and that's keeping him satisfied.

He had a bad rear wheel bearing, which seems to be a fairly common problem on
these cars. I helped him replace the brake drum and bearing yesterday, which
also gave me a chance to give him a little background on suspension and how it
works, as he's been talking about larger sway bars and lowering springs.

The car is close to needing front struts as well, so that will also give him
some additional learning in that area.

We were out for a drive yesterday and he started talking about what it would
take to convert the car from a slush box to a manual. I quickly put an end to
that train of thought. He has no concept of what an undertaking this would be,
not to mention the idea of dropping a couple of grand into a car that's barely
worth the same. Add to this the very limited work space and the need for the
car as a daily driver, and logic won out. Whew!

If we had the space and resources to do it I would encourage and help him, but
more importantly, one needs to understand their limitations in a case like this.

I'm just happy he's even mildly interested. So few kids seem to care much for
cars or anything that involves wrenching or physical labor these days

I saw this in the paper the other day and thought of y'all -- need to

Young entrepreneurs make their pitches for funding

/ BY DAVE MUNDAY

A young diesel-culture fan who sells black-and-white T-shirts with
skulls, plumes of smoke and slogans such as "Eat Soot and Die" won a
local law firm's $3,000 prize for the best business plan. Nick Sisk, a
rising junior at Wando High School, designs and sells T-shirts through
his business, BlackStackGear.com.

He took first prize last week at the Mark Motley Foundation Statewide
Business Plan Competition. "I've been a part of the diesel culture all
my life," he told the panel of judges in the final round. He was
referring to people who drive big trucks, especially those that also
belch black smoke. It's a viable market, like the biker crowd, he said.
Sisk and 10 other students from around the state, including four others
from the Charleston area, competed June 13 at the College of

[MBZ] OT: TERROR in SEATTLE: Gang of violent LEPRECHAUNS on the loose

2012-06-23 Thread Gerry Archer

Delays to Windows 8 feared as bearded rampage continues

Seattle is expected to go into lockdown this weekend, as fears grow that a
gang of rogue leprechauns is on the loose and attacking locals.
Komonews.com reports that police were called to reports of a street fight
last Saturday. When they arrived they saw a number of people run from the
scene, before finding a man "covered in blood and holding his head and
screaming in pain".
When asked what had happened to him, the distressed victim said "It was a
bunch of leprechauns."
The diminutive Irish expatriates had allegedly become enraged because the
man was dancing with a girl.
The victim was unable to provide any further distinguishing information
about the violent gang, except that one of them was wearing "a white tank
top".
After delivering this vital piece of information, the victim was taken to
Harborview medical centre with "multiple head injuries and cuts and
bruises

on his face, back, knuckles and elbows".
The story has now gone viral, putting the fear of God into Seattle, and
quite possibly holding up development on Windows 8snip

No telling where the leprechauns will strike next. Someone should warn
Roger.

Re: [MBZ] Boost Gauge

2012-06-23 Thread Dave Walton
Failure is not fatal. Encourage the kid to experiment to his hearts content. If
he kills the engine, get over it. Too many people never achieve greatness
because they lack confidence or are afraid of failing. I'm involved with the
local business incubator and we see it all the time.

I'd prepare him by laying out some ground rules - if you kill it plan on taking
it apart to find out what happened so we don't kill another one by making the
same mistakes.
