Seriously, I was thinking that engine would be worth having for
something. 275hp in a fairly tight package. I suppose you would need
the tranny and driveshaft and diff and axles and steering/suspension
just to make it a whole transplant into some kind of rat rod. But that
would be cool.

I gotta quit thinking about this or I will be divorced with a trashed
E430 to live in. Or just the hulk of it once I strip off the goodies.
And like I have a shortage of projects.

Grant,

I like what you are saying.

It could be the case that the WVO sucks

It has all been settled in the hot sun in 275 gal cubes for a month or
more, but i am closer to the dregs than i have been in the past.

I may just drain all the grease from the tank and dump in 5 gal of
diesel

STORY

Reply-To: Mercedes Discussion List

Having processed a few hundred thousand gallons of Waste Veg Oil into
Bio
Diesel I can state that not all WVO is the same. There are many
variants in
the different vegetable oils which affect flow rate, cloud point, and
gell

point.

If the only treatment you are giving your supply of WVO is filteration
and
perhaps de-watering, it is likely you have picked up a load of oil
that is

high content animal fat, or perhaps coconut oil, or something other than
what you have been running.

I would suspect water content first. The fuel supply problems you
describe

[via my internet xray vision of course] seem to mimic a ball of water
somewhere in your fuel supply line. Water. being heavier than the oil,
will
act as a shutoff valve while you drive, depending on the size of the
bubble
of water, it may let "some" fuel pass, so the engine runs but doesn't
make

full power.

High animal fat content oil will act much the same as water, in that it
blocks fuel flow when a "bubble" drops out of suspension. Since that
"bubble" of animal fat [or some other kind of vegetable oil with a high
gell point] is "temp sensitive" it's harder to diagnose than water
contamination..

Sounds like you have had a good run with WVO for past 5 years, but now
it's

time to pay the piper. Murphy came for a visit..

If I were having your problem set, I would remove the supply hose at the
engine and attach a supply line to a completely fresh tank [boat tank
perhaps?] of pure pump diesel. Remove and replace all the fuel filters,
start, run, drive the car. IF engine power and performance is "suddenly
restored" then you get to work backwards to the tank of WVO you
presently

have to find your problem.

Good luck, keep save.

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] Wheel bearing grease?

2012-10-24 Thread Dieselhead
Agreed. I have always used molykote BR200 gun grease, and have not
had a failure in 30+ years. I am not sure about bearing numbers in
the 123/124/126 and newer cars, but 108 and before were the same as
in crypsler/plymie/dogde and other mercun cars. No magic there. THe
gun grease tends to weep, but I sure like having the moly on the
surfaces. Much slicker (clintoner?) than plain grease, even
syngrease.

the spec for runout with the dial indicator is for crisp handling.

If it saves you the effort, a half tube (which I think is a small
bit more than the specified amount) ends up packing the bearings,
leaving a bit smeared in the hub, and then some excess here and
there like on the axle stub. I think as long as the whole hub is
not packed full with grease, there will be some room for it to move
around and not cause whatever problems. A tube is like 2x the size
of a toothpaste tube, so about a toothpaste tube amount of grease
would be about right, maybe a bit more than that.

I recall the Marshall admonition on the proper amount, and getting
it down to the last fraction of a gram or something, and it did not
make a great impression on me as being other than "that is what
Mercedes specifies so that is what you do." The dire warnings about
having too much just did not move me much. There is such a thing as
being obsessive, and just greasing the bearing and getting on with
life.

I like to use a bearing packer. These people have bulk Mercedes spec wheel
grease - $10 for 400g:

Cleaning out all the old grease with a solvent and filling the bearing
with

new stuff probably has more to do with longevity than the specific grease
you use in my opinion. Blast the bearing with air to make sure you get all
the solvent out before you repack.

It depends upon the size of the tube of toothpaste you have. :-)

When I did the front wheel bearings on our 240D/3.0, I had one of the
tubes of MB green grease. In weighing it out with our gram scale, I had a
little of the tube left over.

I have seen the little ones at Harbor Freight on sale for under ten bucks.
They are actually quite accurate.

IIRC Marshall specified synthetic grease but would begrudgingly admit that
Mobil 1 synthetic grease was good stuff.

I suspect any good name brand grease would be fine, I doubt synthetic grease
was available when my car was made in '77.

2nd part of my response.

So, is there any reason I need to find MB wheel bearing grease?
Is there any good reason not to use a good quality wheel bearing grease
without their label?
I have been using a full synthetic grease for years in other vehicles
and have had no issues.

If I had a dealer close by I'd go for it. Rusty says its expensive for him to
ship to me. I did get him to send me a couple tubes a couple years ago. The
tubes are super convenient though.

Last time I did one I used Mobil 1 synthetic grease (the pink stuff) and just
guestomated the amount but now I want to do it right. I figure to scoop it out
of the tub with a spoon into a little plastic container...

One tube does 2 fronts. Get a tube, squeeze out about half for one
side, then half for the other side. Close enough.

I guess it does. I don't think you missed anything.

The proximal cause of being packed up is that we had porcelain tile laid
in a large part of the house as part of our fixing up process, started
over two years ago. One of the rooms that got the tile was the room I was
using for my office. After all is said and done, that room will become
the family room and the bedroom that we were using for our bedroom will
become my office.

Since everything needed to come out of a large part of the house, we
could not just shuffle it around between rooms. That's why the storage
container (a 20' sea container) on the driveway. For awhile we had a
second one out on the street, but with being able to move stuff back into
the living and dining rooms, that's gone now.

In putting stuff in the storage container, I decided to pack most stuff,
including all my books, like we were going to move, in case we really do
(which is what I anticipate in looking for a job). When I get the room
that will be my new office straightened out (fixing sheetrock, painting,
etc.), I will bring in the 2x12 bookcases I made in grad school and just
put the boxes on the shelves.

I haven't had any job offers nor telephone interviews since the one with
the Keck Observatory.

Thanks for checking up on me.

[MBZ] worse and worse 300td rest of the story

2012-10-24 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

I drained the tank on thursday

i had run it down to about 3 gallons

the strainer was clean

i put my finger up in the tank and it was clean bare metal

the fuel looked clean

i filtered the fuel through a paper cone filter before i replaced it
into the tank

i'll likely still make a setup with a small diesel only tank for
experimental purposes

thanks,

xx rick

Yup - might have gotten the tank strainer clogged up - even if the
fuel

tank was clean five years ago, it might not be so pristine now.

The problem with cheap digital scales is usually drift.
If you zero it, weigh one thing and then stop there, it should be surprisingly
accurate for the price.

If you're reloading 100 rifle cartridges and using it to weigh the powder, it
will drive you nuts trying to get consistent weights over time as it warms up.

Re: [MBZ] sometimes things get worse and worse REST of the STORY

2012-10-24 Thread G Mann
Having processed a few hundred thousand gallons of Waste Veg Oil into Bio
Diesel I can state that not all WVO is the same. There are many variants in
the different vegetable oils which affect flow rate, cloud point, and gell
point.

If the only treatment you are giving your supply of WVO is filteration and
perhaps de-watering, it is likely you have picked up a load of oil that is
high content animal fat, or perhaps coconut oil, or something other than
what you have been running.

I would suspect water content first. The fuel supply problems you describe
[via my internet xray vision of course] seem to mimic a ball of water
somewhere in your fuel supply line. Water. being heavier than the oil, will
act as a shutoff valve while you drive, depending on the size of the bubble
of water, it may let "some" fuel pass, so the engine runs but doesn't make

Sounds like you have had a good run with WVO for past 5 years, but now it's
time to pay the piper. Murphy came for a visit..

If I were having your problem set, I would remove the supply hose at the
engine and attach a supply line to a completely fresh tank [boat tank
perhaps?] of pure pump diesel. Remove and replace all the fuel filters,
start, run, drive the car. IF engine power and performance is "suddenly
restored" then you get to work backwards to the tank of WVO you presently
have to find your problem.

Good luck, keep save.

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] Wheel bearing grease?

2012-10-24 Thread Michael Canfield
There is Kendall Super Blue in all 4 sets of wheel bearings on my 83.
Seems to roll just fine. I just packed the bearings with a packing tool
and put a bit in the housing like I have done on pretty much every wheel
bearing job I have done. Only difference is that I use the magnetic base
and dial indicator to set the MBZ bearings to spec. on the 300d, most
others I set by feel.
No problems yet and I drive it hard.
