Or you can easily put 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch dry wall (sheetrock) over the
paneling.

Well then your suggestion might be the best. BTW, if you paint the
paneling a creative color it can actually look nice. Also, you could skim
coat the paneling with joint compound, sand smooth and paint. You'll never
know it's paneling. I've done that in a rental property and it actually
looks great!

The place I'd expect to see it is in the basement stairs. Who pulls the
plaster out of the basement stairs to put in drywall unless they did
everything in the house?

The kitchen is fake wood paneling and I'd expect them to lay that right

What's under the ceiling tiles? Probably plaster if your house is old.
Rip out that nasty ceiling tile and fill the gap with plaster.

You can't have combustables within 2 of the chimney. I've been

tiles 4 around the chimney at the ceiling flush with the staple up

Re: [MBZ] Maui being an island and all...

2013-01-09 Thread Greg Fiorentino
SWMBO and I have done the Road to Hana (TRTH) several times. I am guessing
that the saddle road refers to the road going west from Kahului and
approaching Hana from the west. That route is faster but more difficult
than TRTH. Did TRTH most recently a few months back, and they have improved
it considerably over the years. Our first trip there a few years ago we
flew into a possible tsunami. Our pilot told us we might have to RTB if the
tsunami materialized. We made it to Kahului ok, but all the rental cars had
been moved to high ground and the only vehicle available was a full-sized
P/U. That was quite a challenge to thread through the tight turns onto
one-lane bridges (there are 59 bridges on this route!).

But the trip is well worth the challenging drive.

I've thought about that, we have a bedroom with paneling too. The old man that
owned the house before we got it was about as French-Canadian as they get and
the French-Canadians around here love them some fake wood paneling. I hate the
stuff.

I like Dimitri's idea of a skim coat over the paneling but worry that the
paneling flexes and if somebody bumped the wall just right it'd crack and
shed... I guess if you scuffed it good first.

For the bedroom I think it'll be an RR job, that'll allow me to check out the

Or you can easily put 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch dry wall (sheetrock) over the

Re: [MBZ] Maui being an island and all...

2013-01-09 Thread Dieselhead

Firs week da bess, Bra!

We have just come back from a couple of weeks in Hawaii.
We spent the first week on Hawaii at Kailua-Kona and the second on
Oahu in Honolulu.

We did not get a chance to get out of Honolulu but I can tell you
that the road from Kailua-Kona on the west side about midway down
the island to Hilo on the east side and then from Hilo north on the
big island is an interesting drive. Back accross the north and down
the west side is not quite as good.

Randy

On Oahu: Too bad you didn't get across the pali. Agnes Bake shop
is worth the trip, even if you have to pay a taxi. Much cheaper
just to ride da Bus on the 56 or 57 route to downtown Kailua.

Circle Island bus route is interesting too. Not many tourists go to
Waimanalo, but the 55 route will take you there.

Honolulu, and Waikiki in particular, is NOT Hawaii. Get out of
Honolulu to see Hawaii.

I don't mind working in Honolulu, but I never wanted to live there.

On Hawaii: The part of the drive from Kailua through Kealakekua and
Honaunau to the south is the twisty part I was referring to. South
of Honaunau. It was always a fun drive to Kailua and home, except in
the dark with pouring rain.

And, yes the drive north from Hilo up the windward coast is nice too.
Those are my favorites. One of the bridges there is supported by two
trusses of the old iron railroad bridge at Hilo that was washed out
in the tidal wave of 1946. My uncle was the county engineer who
designed that and made it happen. There is a park down under the
bridge, and you can look up at the spans and see the old railroad
bridge.

Respectfully suggest a skim coat of drywall over paneling is not viable.

Wood paneling absorbs moisture and skim coat will release from the wood in
a very nasty way. 1/2 inch drywall sheets with moisture barrier paper back
screwed to the wall over the paneling will work, but I would much rather
[if it were my place] remove the paneling and go to studs/drywall. While
the wall is open, pay attention to insulation leaks and any wiring issues
that need attention.

Do it right, do it once..

Agreed. A quicker and less expensive alternative is to paint the
