John Candy is dead, so not sure who we could get to play the large guy? Charleston Heston is also gone so who is gonna do Kaleb? Cate Blanchett seems to have the emotional ability and range to play Reggie. I suppose I could be played by Hugh Jackman, who has the great fortune to look almost as good as me. [MBZ] Shifty
I replaced the shifter bushing this aft using the bolt/socket/washer technique. This was the one on the shifter, which has some room to work, more or less. The one on the tranny looks like it would be much more unpleasant, probably need that special plier thingie to do that one. I had the front wheels on ramps which was tight but worked. Getting the retaining clip back on required long nose locking pliers to squeeze the shift rod/ shifter, which I used after fooling around with slip joint pliers. Not enough hands! The shift rod needs to compress the new bushing a bit to slip the clip on. This provides a nice tight feel on the shifter. I had to jiggle it few times to get the car started before the new one. So the next disaster okie-vacation will be Kaleb texting okiebenz about how sick everyone on the cruise ship became due to fill-in-the-blank - bad cruise ship adventure. You can't get me on one of those monstrous fiascos. Cruise ships have zero appeal, period. mao It's usually just a norovirus which is pretty common. Few people die and they're over it in a week or ten days with the proper drugs. It usually leaves people healthier than before since after a week or ten days of constant diarrhea, they are definitely clean inside. There is always the chance of real adventure and excitement on those cruises. For example, last year there was a fire on board one of the big ships, the engines quit, and the ship floated helplessly around in the Gulf of Mexico until tugs were arranged to tow it into a distant port. With the ever present possibility of a storm that could have sunk the powerless ship, who can deny that it was an exciting trip? http://www.couriernews.com/view/full_story/21720747/article-Nightmare-cruise-ends As far as a scenario for a book or movie, here would be another possibility: Armed Mexicans abduct Kaleb in Cozumel, take him back in the jungle, and question him. "Are you the world famous Mercedes collector who can repair those cars." (Kaleb admits it.) "And you know the world famous Mercedes parts guy Dr. Fatty." (Kaleb agrees.) They take Kaleb back to a clearing in the jungle where a beautiful 600 sits in a tin shed. "Tell us what's wrong with this car and make a list of parts. Our agents in Miami will get the parts from Dr. Fatty and we won't put you on the chain gang in the jungle if you manage to fix it. Kaleb does their bidding. The scene changes to Garys apartment when there is a knock on the door. "Are you the world famous Dr. Fatty the parts guy?", a huge Mexican in a long black coat and a sombrero asks Gary. Smelling a rat, Gary says no. "Then you're a doctor?", asked the bandits?" "No, that's just a nickname.", says Gary. The Mexicans sees through his ploy and says, You must be both. Get this list of parts and come with us. We need a doctor for Comandante Diablo. Garys protests do no good, so he gets the parts and the Mexicans take him to the outlaws hiding place in the jungle. The scene changes to the outlaws lair where Kaleb fixes the 600, Gary cures El Comandantes back problems with chiropractic whacks and twists he learned in a judo course, a new Mexican el presidente is elected, the new presidente makes peace with the outlaws, and Comandante Diablo is appointed ambassador to Oklahoma and Arkansas where Americas illegal Mexicans will be permanently settled; thus solving a serious political problem. Re: [MBZ] Fw: 300D parts
Won't do you any good to just change the filter adapter, the LOCATION is the problem. 615 engines have the filter adapter up front, 616s and 617s are on the rear of the driver's side. There are remote filter adapters available, and I've seen them on W123's occasionally, don't remember which model. Can be done, but it's a pain. Re: [MBZ] Fw: 300D parts
The oil filter is going to be a big problem, and no, you can NOT bolt the oil filter from a 115 diesel onto the OM617 from the 123. This is why the 200D 2.4 has a remote oelfilter. One of the difficulties is that the W115s have the oil filter on the bottom because of chassis structural memeber, whereas the W123s have the oil filter on the top. Re: [MBZ] Fw: 300D parts
The biggest difference is the oil filter mounting. You must use a remove oil filter if you put a late 615, 616 or 617 into a W115. No turbo, it will not fit without major modifications I don't think. You would have to measure. That said, I would have loved to have a turbodiesel in my old 220D -- the only thing wrong with the way that car drove was lack of power! Sadly it was far to rusty to mess with, and I sold it and the spare engine to a guy who wanted to put the engine and transmission in an S10. Actually, I put a NA 617 into a W123 that had had a 616, so it wasn't too bad. I also changed the differential, transmission, radiator, and driveshaft and added the clutch pedal. > When my 115 died, I looked at the relative difficulty and decided I > didn't want to swap in from a 123. One of the difficulties is that the W115s have the oil filter on the bottom because of chassis structural memeber, whereas the W123s have the oil filter on the top. I'm not sure why no one has responded, so I'll give it a shot. Transmission, they are definitely different but they might be compatible. It would probably shift weird. I think all 115s had mechanical adjustment rather than vacuum? I recall the early 115 diesel transmissions are not compatible with the late 115 diesel engines, and vice versa. Not sure what the gassers used. He probably would want to swap the differential, also. There are some differences between the 123 and the 115 616. I believe Craig has put a 617 into a late 115, so it's possible, but that might be a high bar. :) At the least the oil filter has to be rerouted, and I'm sure there are mounting differences because the bay is very different. When my 115 died, I looked at the relative difficulty and decided I didn't want to swap in from a 123. I might make a different decision today, but at the time it did not seem like a job I could manage. Re: [MBZ] Ok, so what's the secret?
No, I believe he has a new blade - his problem is the same I have on my W124 91 300D - the metal arm on the mono wiper does not lift off the windshield more than a few inches - to get the blade off the arm the blade must be rotated to as much as 90 degrees to get the bade to release from the arm's U shape at the end. I kind of forced mine to remove and replace it But Craig may have less movement than I do... Anyone? mao ___ Sounds like Craig already has the rubber part and just wants tips on installation. I bought just the rubber parts from Rusty not too long back for the 115 300D so call Gary if you need some. He may still be able to supply them. Maybe it was introduced on the 300D, and went to all OMs with the 123. Best, Tim I'm thinking the OM615 engines were manual compensation, and the OM616 and 617 had the ADA until the turbo was added to the 617 (123) and the ALDA came into use for turbo engines. That would mean early 115 used manual altitude compensation and late 115 had ADA. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] ALDA
IIRC, the ADA is basically an ALDA that is open to atmospheric pressure. It was a very different shape, but the way it works is similar-a sealed section (an aneroid) is inside the outer casing. The aneroid works against the adjustment screw at the top and the pin from the injection pump at the bottom. Higher pressures flatten the aneroid more than lower pressures, which allows the injection pump pin to stick out more. The screw is used to calibrate the unit. -- John W Reames jream...@verizon.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Feb 21, 2014, at 14:44, Randy Bennell wrote: > On 21/02/2014 8:22 AM, Dieselhead wrote: >>> The ALDA is critical for getting extra power from the turbo.
