If Froggy is '74 as I suspect, he needs a tumbler from a 115 or 116, nothing much later. It should heave the edge cut key. It might be that Curt is correct, you need to clean it, and possibly need a new key, but the tumbler assembly might be OK. -- OK Don NSA: The only branch of government that actually listens to US citizens! That noise was a motor pulling the hatch shut. My first guess is the wiring at the hinge has flexed too many times and your may have a broken wire or two. Re: [MBZ] Now you can't get R107 Tumblers
107's, with their near-20-year run, exhibit quite a variation over the years. ACC, engines, keys, etc. Our 1983 and 1986 SL's used different keys, for example. 1986 was side-cut, the 1983 was old-school edge-cut. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Now you can't get R107 Tumblers
I'm I right in assuming 107 keys are side cut like 124/201 keys? For the edge cut keys like a 123 I think the conventional wisdom that you replace the tumbler is wrong. The tumbler itself has absolutely no wear items at all that I can detect. What happens is the old lubricant gets gooey, actually since the old lubricant is probably just graphite its other crap that gets into the tumbler that gets gooey, plus brass shaved off the wafers. My '78 240D got sticky a couple years ago. I took it apart and cleaned it real good with brake cleaner. Then I rebuilt it so it is keyed the same as the doors which it wasn't before. Its not brain surgery, the tumbler is a very simple piece of kit. I buffed it good so the outside turned nicely in the housing and its been good for at least 2 years... I can't imagine the side cut keys are significantly different although I've never had one to play with. If somebody wanted to donate a tumbler from one I'd spend some time on it. -Curt Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2014 15:36:20 -0700 From: clay To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] Now you can't get R107 Tumblers Message-ID: <97a84a7f-5d6f-4cb9-899b-ada586cbe...@comcast.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I went to the dealer to order a fresh tumbler for Froggy. We spent a half hour on the EPC trying to figure out what the heck to do . The datac ard does not show for the car, and the parts are not available anymore. There were five tumbler options and they all showed as being substituted to another part that is not available. The next step substituted to having to replace the whole lock system, but that was not able to get ordered and said to purchase a replacement steering column. That is not available. Parts guy plans to call Germany or maybe a Unicorn breeder so he can understand how to resolve the issue. I am thinking the early R107 and the W116 share an ignition lock.
