Read one of the paragraphs under the video:
"These Machines Of War And The Brave Men Associated With THEM. ARE
Responsible For The America That WE Know Today."
All too true. This is the "Today" that I see - lazy, gizmo dependent,
entitlement loving, loving big government, more war, more government.
This is a good thing? - Do not forget that the past is the
precursor/progenitor of the future in which we live. What happened?
The vigor and strength of body and resolve necessary to bring an
objective to reality, etc - that is good stuff, it seems. However, if
that is necessary to produce the failure we know today? - not so much.
I can do without that. What went wrong? Ask not what your country
can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Much of those
pictures is waaay too wrong - politically incorrect, disrespectful of
wimen, racist, etc. What went wrong?
...a rhetorical question... no answer can be spoken...
We are not the same country that produced these warbirds or flew those
missions or painted ladies on the warbirds or counted the strikes by
painting bombs on the fuselage, etc. What a massive destruction of
production. The bottom line $$ would not allow this to happen again.
War cannot happen the same way ever again, so, we gotta forget any
romanticism about WWII warbirds - all done, to be forgotten. No
thanks to "Brave" men. No thanks for the failure we know today. No
thanks.
End rant...

WW-2 fighter pilot friend bought a P-51 and flew it out of Miami. He
headed for Jacksonville one day, didn't take on enough fuel (50+ gph),
and had to land on a highway about 30 miles short of destination. Soon
after he sold it and bought an Aero Commander twin. He would take
friends up and do acrobatics. Unfortunately I never had an opportunity
to go up with him before he retired and sold the plane.

bought a P 51 to fly in the Bendix air race for $1,500 dollars. Being a
hotshot WW2 fighter pilot he ran the whole race at military power until the
engine blew, made an emergency landing somewhere in the wilds of Kansas and
sold it for scrap. He crashed, raced, ruined, and wore out several other
fighters of the era.. all because they were scrap anyway and cheap. Had he
kept them all they would be worth millions now.

Standard military procedure at that time was to always fuel up an airplane
upon landing, so the airplanes setting in depot were full of fuel. One
scrap dealer bought up all the "scrap" he could get, drained the tanks and
started "Whiting Gas Stations" which were an Icon along Route 66 for a long
time. He then crushed and sold all the airplanes for scrap aluminum. They
had onsite smelters at Kingman AZ for example. You can google "Kingman ww2
airplanes" and should find pictures of acres of fighters and bombers flown
there and "stored".. to be sold. Goodyear AZ also had a huge depot, as well
as Davis Monthan in Tucson AZ [still active storage site].

[MBZ] OT: What a trip!

2014-07-01 Thread Curt Raymond
Just got back (well last night but it was 10pm by the time we unpacked) from
Charlotte, MI and the 2014 Coleman Collectors convention.
Got to see our own Mitch and ride in his E320(Is that right? I'm sure he'll
correct me.) (MB content).

Looks like we traveled just over 1400 miles using around 40 gallons of diesel
fuel, I haven't checked the mpg yet but spot checks on the last 2 tanks suggest
around 47mpg which isn't bad, we were loaded heavy and running fast. In MI
especially I held it to 80mph just to keep up and occasionally made runs up to
90mph. The Jetta is a champ, no breakdowns, not even any hiccups other than the
cruise control won't engage which I think is just a dirty switch.

The convention was a blast although the camp ground was very close to the
highway which was very loud at night. Fortunately we had earplugs.

Yes. Fred recommended that for my 300CD & I did that & after a couple
thousand miles the flaring has subsided & up shifts are smoother. I was not
being facetious in my earlier post about M1 ATF.

I may be missing a part of the conversation, but if the subject is the
reference to go by here, why would you put anything but another Mercedes
engine under the hood of an Adenauer? If you are worried about "modern
traffic merging" and need some grunt, outfitting it like a late 90's E
class is sure to provide what you need, yes?

Re: [MBZ] W123 donuts

2014-07-01 Thread Dan Penoff
The rubber ones break down over time and get cracked. They're cheap to replace
but be sure you get OE ones or you'll be doing it again in a couple of years.

The chain reinforced ones were used on SL models for some strange reason and
are considerably more expensive than the plain rubber ones.
