Re: [MBZ] Rebuilding an alternator

2014-09-23 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The real key is whether or not it will produce full amperage -- old
high resistance windings, worn off regulator brushes, or weak diodes
will all test fine with an ohmeter, but the alternator will only
product part of it's full load rating.

I've got to do the one in the TE, the battery won't stay charged in
use. May need a new starter, too -- it's about that age.

Re: [MBZ] Rebuilding an alternator

2014-09-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Finally pulled the alternator and took it apart to test the components.
The windings all test fine, and the diodes/rectifier test fine. I found
that the voltage regulator contacts look a little dirty, so I'm going to
clean those up and put it all back together, then down to the local FLAPS
for operational testing. Bearings are fine as well.

I did find this website which seems to have REALLY good prices on Bosch
parts for rebuilding starters and alternators. I paid about $100 IIRC for
a starter solenoid, these guys sell the same thing for about 1/3 the price:

Re: [MBZ] Kent says SVO is junk

2014-09-23 Thread ernest breakfield via Mercedes
while i don't use W/SVO in our 617, i think it's only fair to point out
that Kent neglects to mention many of the critical details associated
with the alleged VO use on the injectors in question.

amongst the things we don't know are:
- if, or how well, the VO was filtered,
- what temp the fuel was heated to at the injectors,
- whether this was a single-tank system or dual-tank system (where
start-up and shut-down are on BioD or #2), and
- what percentage of the time the vehicle in question was run
around-town vs. on the highway.

my personal concerns about VO are more related to issues well
*after* the injectors, but i think it's only prudent to not be making
generalizations on the topic without knowing far more of the relevant
detail.

cheers!

So, there is really an issue with using veggie oil, as it gums up the

Sorry it got buggered up should have been "does just as good a
job" The reason the York does so good is because it doesn't
circulate very much oil, less oil means better heat transfer. The
Sanden is the same, has an oil sump and doesn't circulate much
oil. Because of the way it's built 5 or 7 'wobble plate driven
pistons vs crankshaft with two pistons for the York, the Sanden
uses less power to do the same job. Or so it was explained to me.

Has anyone kept up with a chess tournament in St. Louis where a top player has
demolished other top players in an amazing series of wins?

http://www.theweekinchess.com/chessnews/events/2nd-sinquefield-cup-2014/caruana-wins-the-sinquefield-cup-with-two-rounds-to-spare-but-allows-carlsen-to-escape-with-a-draw

http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/fabiano-caruana-is-doing-the-impossible-at-chesss-most-competitive-tournament/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabiano_Caruana

Matches where the world champ is defeated by another grandmaster are
interesting, but this is unheard of.

Here is another interesting situation in current world chess:

"Kirsan Ilyumzhinov – who controls world chess (FIDE) - claims to have been
abducted by aliens. He was re-elected in the battle for control of world
chess."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirsan_Ilyumzhinov

Ilyumzhinov has drawn world-wide attention for claiming personal contact with
aliens, alleging that they took him on a mystical tour of the galaxy in their
spaceship in 1997.[6][7] A Chess Notes feature article by Edward Winter
provides a comprehensive collection of Ilyumzhinov's own words on his alleged
encounters with aliens.

" President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov tells of his invitation to an alien spaceship":

‘It happened on 17 September, I remember, in Moscow; it happened in my
apartment.

... I was taken from my apartment in Moscow and taken to this spaceship,
and we went to some star. After that I asked “Please bring me back” because the
next day I should be back in Kalmykia, to Elista, and go to the Ukraine. They
said, “No problem Kirsan you have time.”

They are people like us. They have the same mind, the same vision. I talked
with them. I understand we are not alone in this whole world. We are not unique.

I am not a crazy man ... but after that when I gave the first interview to
Radio Freedom in Russia five years ago thousands, not hundreds, thousands of
people wrote me letters and called me on the phone saying “Kirsan, you are a
politician and you aren’t afraid to speak about it.” From the United States
every year, it is an official statistic, more than four thousand people are
contacted in such a way. My theory is that chess comes from space. Why? Because
the same rules, 64 squares, black and white, and the same rules in Japan, in

it seems maybe it is from space."

[MBZ] Head of world chess says he was abducted by aliens and that chess is an aliens game

2014-09-23 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Why? Because
the same rules, 64 squares, black and white, and the same rules in Japan, in
China, in Qatar, in Mongolia, in Africa. The rules are the same. Why? I think
it seems maybe it is from space."

i (for one) wish buying a simple car was an option here. what would it
cost? would a Mercedes built today last 25, 30, 35 years?

consider that the 300D sold for upwards of $30K in the 1980s...

I'd not be in the market for a new one. The problem is they're
not really making the things now that I'd want to buy used in
