Also interesting are the comments: A wingspan of 230 feet, six piston engines and later four additional turbojet engines, a 278,000lb empty weight, a max bomb load of close to 80,000lbs and intercontinental range, the B-36 was truly a remarkable giant of the skies. Very few airfields in the US during the late 1940s were long and fortified enough to handle the XB-36's takeoff run and original main gear that featured one massive tire and that exerted 156 pounds per square inch. http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--AU4cgkAT--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/hc22dgpzlycvnwls8mpf.jpg This, and the fact that it would be useful to forward deploy and disperse B-36s during a nuclear exchange, meant that a new landing gear system needed to be devised. We used a #25 filter with it - good enough for playing with. I also have a Kodak UV passing filter that looks black to the eye. You have to use old lenses without a UV filter in the cement between elements. We pulled the yellow plastic covers off of a strobe to get UV for the photos. The focal point is different than visible light, so we focused the lens, looked at the distance to the IR mark on the lens barrel, and turned the ring about that amount the other way. Re: [MBZ] OT: Cheap IR Camera
Can't you just disassemble a digital camera and take the IR filter out? No. IR covers a lot of ground, basically from DC to (near) daylight! The silicon sensors in video/still cameras are sensitive to near-IR. Far-IR, heat, requires a whole 'nother level of involvement! Near-IR used to be accomplished with special film, and black-appearing filters. (I have one.) Thermal imaging, when I last played with it, was a camcorder-ey device with an internal liquid-helium cooling system (or so they said) like an air conditioner, and ZnS lenses. Looked like gray plastic, not glass. Price was on the order of 1/2 year's salary for one of the engineers. Was pretty cool to put your hand against a heating duct and then see the residual image fade out over a minute or so after you removed it. The display used false-color to show heat levels. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] New fan in 83 300TD
Yes there are. Unfortunately they are all bad. The black death takes almost all of these way before the car dies. There are quite a few different cars that you can get these from. Just look on the dash of all the late 80's to early 90's. If you want to put one into a w123, try to get one of the shorter ones. It took a bit to get it to fit. I had to break out two of the plastic barrels that the screws go into on an old instrument panel housing. So when you take the unit out of the junker you might want to consider taking two barrels from it's panel housing. The screws are to the barrels in place on the temp gauge and then the barrels are flattened on the top so the whole thing will slide into the space in your panel housing. When everything fits put a bit of glue to hold the barrel to your housing and you are good to go. Make sure you don't glue the screws or gauge to the barrels or you might not get it apart later. Re: [MBZ] OT: Cheap IR Camera
When I was in the generator business we had a separate department that did thermal imaging of electrical systems. When you get into big distribution gear, the conductors are large copper bars. These are bolted together for both mechanical and electrical connections. If the bolts become loose, which can happen due to thermal stress, the resistance of the connections can become high enough to cause heating and in a worst case scenario, a fire. Distribution gear would be scanned every few years or spot checks done at the joints to look for localized heating, when if found, would trigger a full blown scan. This department used a very expensive ($50k+) thermal imaging camera to scan the bars under load and record the findings. While we didn't get to play with it, the operators would often have it out of the case and set up on a large tripod in the office, ostensibly to "calibrate" it. Correct. It is the correct length for the application, but not bent. The shop techs have to bend the line to match the old one using a tubing bender. If the line has fittings on the ends, I doubt that the spring type tool will fit over the fittings. But I agree that you need something to avoid kinks. Re: [MBZ] OT: Cheap IR Camera
We had a really nice Sony digicam that had a "night vision" feature which was really cool for night shots. My wife had bought it through a past job, we had to give it up when she left and I'm sure it got thrown in some bin somewhere. I was thinking I should try to find one on ebay for cheap. I have an old Sony camcorder with night vision that the tape part does not work (I found it in the recycle bin) but it works fine as a computer cam. --R On 9/26/14 1:45 PM, Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes wrote: IIRC there are some digital cameras that never had an IR filter.
