Re: [MBZ] Finally, something I would like to have in an electric car

2015-08-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have no answers at the moment.. Come Monday.. expect I may contact the
web site and see if it's just a concept or actually certified for flight
and for sale..

If I grasp the design details correctly.. it has an on board fuel engine
that runs generator which drives electric motors.. actually, not a bad
concept over helicopter design for example, which uses shafts, gearboxes,
and complex couplings... in concept at least.. in actual application...
lots of unanswered questions..

To fly it needs FAA certification.. That is no small feat..

Nice idea.

Rather high wing loading with the small wings.

1 megawatt = 1341 horsepower, how long can the batteries provide 1041
horsepower? How heavy are they?

How large is the fuel tank? How often does it need to be filled?

Does Costco sell propane down south?
We are currently paying $8.45 for a 20# fill at Costco here in Winnipeg.

Re: [MBZ] No more sinking, maybe

2015-08-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I think you're right Dan, that'll be my next move. I noticed that the
brake hoses on my '87 wagon are looking pretty ragged, might as well get an
extra set for the '95 sedan and see how that works.

Hmmm, if they are the same part number, perhaps I'll get one set of new
hoses for the wagon, and try them on the sedan before they go on the wagon,
then I'll know. That will only cost me brake fluid and time.

Even worse, it was a charity auction car, so they might have paid less.

However, they're probably going to sell for as close to "market value" as
they can, regardless of their cost, until enough time has gone by.

I think if Dad checks with them once or twice, they'll come down.

He's "mulling"

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150808/PC1603/150809393/1009

I think he just came by a little while ago, I heard the helicopter
buzzing around, but I did not go out to wave the flag.

My buddy and his wife were riding their bikes on the beach when they
were here a few weeks ago, saw Mrs. B jogging on the beach early Sunday
morning. She had a coupla SS guys trailing along and the Coasties had a
dinghy following off the beach, and there was a cutter a bit further off
shore. I was riding my bike the afternoon they came, bunch of cops came
flying past me in the road and closed it down, I rode on to the
roundabout and stopped next to one of the deputies and was chatting with
him, the motorcade came by a few minutes later. The deputy seemed
rather bored with the whole matter and seemed to rather be doing
something else. I got a bunch of pics. It was actually fairly low-key,
only 6 or 8 vehicles aside from ever how many cops. It always buggers
up the (one) road coming out this way as they have sort of a rolling
blockade that blocks off other roads and driveways and such for 10 or 15
minutes. I have no idea why they don't just fly him out in a helo from
the airport and dispense with all the drama but I guess that would be
more involved.

He occasionally comes to the little shopping center down the road for an
ice cream or whatever, usually fairly low-key. I try to avoid the place
this time a year as it is full of idiot Yankee turistas who check their
brains at the bridge before proceeding on out this way.

Subject: [MBZ] No more sinking, maybe

FTE master cylinder arrived last night about 8:30 p.m., I had half a day
off so I installed it after lunch. Did not bench bleed it, just used the
power bleeder and pushed fresh fluid out to all four wheels.

Pedal feel is exactly like before (mushy) but it has always been mushy on
that car. I may decide to try a different brake booster. What causes a
mushy brake pedal other than air or bad MC? Time for new brake hoses at
all four corners?

At first, the pedal would sink, just like with the last MC. I drove it
around the block and stopped hard a few times, and it got better. Doesn't
sink now, brakes do their thing just fine, no pulling. I may get some
more

brake fluid and try bleeding it some more.

I think I'll drive this car for a few days and see how it performs.

OE on the MBs were organic or asbestos, depending on age. (pre 1990 MBs)
OE on the dogde were ceramic, so I used ceramic there.

DO you want or care about clean wheels?

Ceramic will keep your wheels cleaner. I've had very good luck with
cheap pads from oreely. They do make your wheels dirty. I just clean
and paint the wheels every few years with a rattlecan. Unless you are
driving on a race track, the cheap (organic) pads work very well. If
you plan to drag the brakes all the way down a mountain, they may
fade, but I never have any problem.

Ceramic on the dogde van: The anti skid accelerometer has been fubar
mostly since we got the van. Most of the time the system turns itself
off, but sometimes the LF brake drags. this ruins the discs and
pads. About 18 months ago I put new pads and rotors on; did the
ceramic pad breakin stuff; and they were wonderful.

Unfortunately, i never figured out how to snip the purple wire
somewhere buried under the console that is said to disable the
antiskid system. So the new rotors and pads are ruined. I recently
dug in to the console innards and found the accelerometer. I never
found the purple wire, but I unplugged the accelerometer, with the
same effect. Anti skid is now dead. There are 2 fuses you can pull to
disable, but it also kills the speedometer, odometer and some other
somewhat necessary systems. This is all not really the fault of
ceramic pads, but i don't think the cheap pads would cause the rotor
warping like these did.

The whole deal of the special breakin procedure for the ceramic pads
is related to not warping the rotors and putting a glaze on the
ceramic pad.

Re: [MBZ] Ceramic brakes Wuz:This is bad

2015-08-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There’s no special break-in process for ceramic pads that I know of. You bed
them in just like you would a set of organic pads, and that’s it.

I’ve used ceramic pads on the last three cars I’ve owned, and not only do they
keep the wheels a lot cleaner, they last longer, too.

I just bought a set of domestic name brand (Wagner?) organic pads for the 1998
S420 from Rock Auto on closeout. A whopping $6.00.

Re: [MBZ] ? for the easterners

2015-08-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If you want to avoid potentially chilly temperatures, I would stay south of the
Space Coast (Melbourne, Cocoa Beach) on the east coast, and Tampa on the west.

The Panhandle and Jacksonville have seasons. It can easily get into the 30s-40s
in Pensacola and Panama City in the winter months.

Avoid South Florida unless you're looking for an "international" flare. Naples
is nice but it's where all the rich conservatives winter, so it's pricey.

You could always go to the Bradenton area, which is immediately south of me
(Tampa). It's where the Amish winter.
