[MBZ] Any SLK/R170 Owners Out There?

2015-10-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Fellow employee is buying an SLK230 (2001) with 100k on it from a
neighbor/original owner.

I know nothing about these cars. Anyone out there familiar with them, know any
of the Achille's heel/warts? I'm figuring hydraulics, since it's a convertible.
Looks like a fleece oil filter engine, too, but not totally sure of that.

Of course he's asking me about it, so I said I would do some digging. Looking
over at BW now, too.

I saw one of the first of those things sitting in front of the grand
casino in Monte Carlo, it did not appeal to me then nor does it now,
though my daughter likes them.

I know nothing about them other than they are really small.

2015-10-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Actually my '05 isn't really a bottom feeder, once I replace the driver's
fender and give it a polish it'll be a pretty nice car.
That said I was considering a Craigslist ad, Boston is a pretty liberal place,
theres lots of TDIs running around here, no doubt owned by idiot tree huggers.

Curt should be all over this whole thing, get a newer TDI and stop
fooling with the bottom feeder level dizzels.  He could be a bottom
feeder but get an upper level dizzel while helping alleviate green white
guilt.

Same here. Toy car, not a serious vehicle, possibly a throwaway.

CarMax offered the owner $3000 for it. He's selling it to guy I know for that.
Guy I know is buying it for two teenage daughters.

He is an amazingly cheap bastard, too, so this should be fun to watch.

2015-10-20 Thread clay via Mercedes
Small car better suited to petite women. Local club has a SLK group of just
that demographic.

Early examples had issues with the hydraulic tops. Same issues the early CLK
cab had. No room in the trunk for more than an overnight bag and cosmetic
case. Some folks are able to fit a golf bag with top down.

The 230 is underpowered. Drivers prefer the 320 for greater speed and torque.
The examples I have seen are not well cared for as a rule. I am sure there are
many people who do all the dealer work, but I suspect the bulk of the cars were
leased and sold CPO down the line to wannabe owners who did not provide the
care required after two years. Early models were plentiful on the road as new,
then seemed to fill secondary market used lots, and now are not seen on CL or
the road. Second gen cars are few and far between.

Re: [MBZ] Any SLK/R170 Owners Out There?

2015-10-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks, Clay.

Based on the physique of this guy (he couldn't be more than 5'8" in heels) I
have to believe his kids are small in stature as well.

One owner, dealer maintained from what he's telling me, so it sounds like it's
been cared for. Since it's going to be kids driving it, just as well that it's
underpowered.

I checked with Klaus of Top Hydraulics, the recognized g-d and guru of all
things convertible, and he said the later models were pretty good. Only has
five cylinders to operate the top, compared to 11 in my SL500. A lot simpler
system according to him.

Other than that I know nothing else about the car. From what little I've read
so far, they don't appear to have too many weak points.

If I get a pair of D2R of the correct 4.3kK color, I would expect it to work out
as well or better than your situation.

D2R - for reflector focused lamps.
D2S - for front focused (projector) lamps.
D2C - this D2 stuff is outdated, let's just stock one bulb that sort of works
for D2R and D2S applications.

Given the price difference, I think I'll buy the 'junk', put it in the dead
light, and compare it to the
old Phillips on the other side. If it's a lot worse, I'll get something better.
If it's not bad, I'll put
the other new bulb in and put the Phillips in the glove box for a spare.

Mitch.

What was that Chrysler thing that was pretty much the same design as the

not many.

Re: [MBZ] Somewhat OT: Liberal Hand-wringing, Painful Introspection, and Existential Crises

2015-10-20 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I was reading an article in the paper about this while eating lunch, it
looks like the lawyers are lining up to "help" the owners of these
things, with various remedies being considered, including compensation,
buyback, replacement, etc. depending on what they can sort out in the
different states/fed level. Of course the lawyers would get 30% on the
deal, owners would probably get a coupon to buy another VW, and all this
would take about 8 years to wind its way along.

I wonder if there might be a market in going to the greenies and
offering them cash right now for the car to be done with it, they could
then go buy a Pious and feel better. If you could get them
cheap enough you could probably ride out the process and make some money
off the deal, or just sell them "as is" to others who would be willing
to ride out the process with some potential of getting something out of
it. You'd have to calculate values and such but I bet some $$ could be
made off it if you wanted to fool with the whole deal.

Re: [MBZ] Somewhat OT: Liberal Hand-wringing, Painful Introspection, and Existential Crises

2015-10-20 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I'm still waiting for the Mercedes shoe to drop. I'm suspicious of the
discrepancy between the EPA MPG numbers (low) and actual observed numbers
(high). Might MB have also planted EPA pollution test defeat code, which
decreased mileage during the test while decreasing pollution?

My understanding is that a contributing factor in the case of VW is the
relatively loose European model for vehicle pollution standards testing, which
invites some serious "gaming" of the testing to improve performance. If VW
decided to play fast and loose "over there" and then fell down that slippery
slope for the U.S.A. EPA testing, could the same have happened to Mercedes?
BMW?

2015-10-20 Thread MG via Mercedes
I had an offer from someone to make a bid on a 98 Jag XJ8. Don't
know anything about them but this one is supposed to have a new
factory motor installed by the dealer that forgot to put oil in
when doing an oil change and locked the original engine. It's
only had about 100 miles on it since then and less then 100K in
all. What think you as to the value of the car. Everything works.

2015-10-20 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Guys,
I'm not sure what the fuss is here. I've never purchased a new car including
back into the 70s which ever met the mileage listed on the sticker. I think VW
should sue the EPA for restriction of trade or some such nonsense. Either way,
I agree, the lawyers will end up richer, the government gets more money in
fines, and the buyer gets hosed. I personally drove a 77 full size Olds Cutlass
with a 350 V8 on loan from the dealership which got 35 mpg on the highway doing
70-75 with the AC on in July. I wanted the car, but the dealership said they
couldn't sell it because as their loaner they'd made mods which didn't meet EPA
rules/regulations. So, does the EPA / government care about mileage or control?
Anyway, it's all BS to me and just my .02.
Best Wishes,

Mitch,
It may not be high mileage. It may be one of those owners with a big butt who
"plops" down on the seat instead of getting in easily.
