Blower motor doesn't work

Easy to replace on 123, you just need one.

Dashlights doesn't work

Dimmer blown. Bypass, they're too dim anyway.

Odometer doesn't work

Gear.

Everything above could be a simple electrical fix"

But isn't. Some of them _might_ be.

None that would save time. The only way I have been able to trouble shoot
computer hardware is by replacing components  one at a time‎ until I find the
culprit. I had a flaky video card one time. It had very similar symptoms to
what you describe. Ditto on RAM. It can be a tedious process, but I personally
know of no other way. Perhaps someone else does.

[MBZ] Stupid Computers, Take 2

2016-06-21 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I asked earlier about putting Win7 on another disk because Shirley
dropped a glass jar of coffee on our Dell 600m laptop and damaged the
screen. I thought I had another Dell 600m, but I cannot find it.

Now, I'm fighting with trying to load and update CentOS 5 Linux on a
desktop I want to use as an X terminal.

I knew the disk in the desktop was flakey, so I put in that computer the
disk on which I had attempted to get CentOS 7 running (A Western Digital
RE4) and installed a limited set of CentOS 5 files.

The install went OK, but when I went to update the software (which put a
lot more stress on the system), the computer locked up.

I recalled several times in working on CentOS 7 (with that disk in
another computer) when the computer locked up, so I thought the disk
might be the problem.

I generated a DOS bootable USB stick with the Western Digital diagnostics
on it and did a full test. The disk passed.

I then installed Win 7, which worked OK.

I rebooted the USB stick and wrote zeroes to the entire disk. I then
removed the disk and installed another new, old-stock WD RE4. I decided
to install a fairly complete set of CentOS 5. That install locked up
about 1/3 of the way through.

I recalled in years past thinking that that processor might be flakey, so
I downloaded cpuburn-in (http://cpuburnin.com/). A ten-minute run raised
the processor temperature to 42 deg.C, but had no errors. I'm now in the
midst of a 30-minute run.

I could run memtest86+ to check the RAM, but I don't know if that would
show anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm getting really tired of spending time on this computer -- I have a
lot of other things to do.

Well, I loaded a copy of Win7 64bit Pro on two desktops and a laptop. Each one
called home to register themselves. Months later, I loaded Win10 64 bit Pro on
the two desktops and the laptop required 32 bit. But, each one called home and
registered themselves with no problems. If you have a valid serial number, I
don't think the MS registration software cares that much. And I've moved the OS
between PCs with no problems at all.
Am I missing something here? I'm "sure" a Mac would be easier :-))) But some of

If it's just a new disk you should be able to use the serial # from the

authorize. I think that if the new laptop is the same model it can be
called

an upgrade or repair. I doubt they will authorize the OS to a completely

A/C: could be as simple as a fuse or a fresh charge of Freon, could be
far more. You'd need a PPI from a competent Mercedes-Benz diesel
mechanic (note that all four qualifications are required to produce a
valid PPI).

Assume bad compressor $1000. Send it out.

Blower motor: could be fuse, brushes, or totally dead motor. I've
never touched a 123.123 blower motor, but I think they are easier than
a 124.

$150 if you do it, $450 if you send it out. (Assume it needs a motor)

Dash lights: probably a bad contract in the rheostat. Easy fix, if
you're handy with contact cleaner and/or a soldering iron. Worst case:
need a replacement instrument cluster housing.
An hour with a HF soldering iron, flux and solder. You will need a 2"
wire out of an ethernet cable, or similar 20 to 24 ga wire.

Odometer: likely a slipping gear, could be a gear has disintegrated.
Worst case you send the speedometer out for repair and calibration.
If you do it, an hour and a file and some epoxy. If you send out the
head, an hour and $300

Worst case, $1750 in expenses to fix those 4 things. If the suspension
and drive train are good, when you get done you will have a $3000 car.
$1250 is still my top offer, If the guy wants to fix all the neglected
things, then it may be worth his price. If the guy could somehow prove
the AC compressor is new, then it is worth more.

I can't imagine "a simple electrical fix" that would solve all the
listed problems.

"A/C does not work may only need freon
Blower motor doesn't work
Dashlights doesn't work
Odometer doesn't work
Everything above could be a simple electrical fix"

I wonder how long the odometer has not been working. 160,000 miles is
nothing. It is very nice looking. Is that black or a really dark blue?

I had to have the blower motor replaced on my 124 diesel and it was
kind of a bear. Is the blower motor as bad on these. I am actually
interested in this car if it is not a money pit.

It must be tough for him to sell it, I hope he gets a good price. He

If it's just a new disk you should be able to use the serial # from the
sticker. If this can't be done automatically you can phone M$ and they can
authorize. I think that if the new laptop is the same model it can be called
an upgrade or repair. I doubt they will authorize the OS to a completely
different laptop.

What does one do with a Windows computer which has been authorized and

Does Microsoft prohibit installing the same OS onto the second disk?

What about a laptop that has been damaged and one needs to move to a new

You have to call MSFT with the code or something and then go through
some process to get an approval. It has been a long time since I did it
but I remember it was fairly straightforward, but that was with XP so

THe price of housing has not changed that much in 25 years. It took a
HGE jump in 1988. That is why in 1988 the average income was
$10,000 but the average household income was about $35,000. 3.5 working
people avg., per household. Ohana housing.

The difference is the the -ists in 1988, wanted them. Now the bums they
imported have overwhelmed the gimme system, and threatens the golden
goose. So, now they want them gone. Only took them 28 years to figger
that out!

They are worried about their image. Concerned about scaring away the
tourists.
They do have people that try to get the homeless into shelters etc but
many of them have issues like drug addiction and do not want to be
helped.
The current solution is to run them out of Waikiki so that the
tourists won't see them sprawled on the sidewalks.
That, of course, is pushing them into other areas where the locals are
not any happier to see them.

Part of the problem is the outrageous price of housing in Hawaii. The
working poor are being driven out.

*4. Charleston, South Carolina *

White millennials have flocked to Charleston, South Carolina, drawn by the
boom in the city's tech sector and its high salaries. So many, in fact,
that Charleston has, for the first time in six decades, become a
majority-white city. Unsurprisingly, the real estate developers have
followed. With the influx of tech workers, along with students from the
College of Charleston, downtown Charleston has seen median rent prices go
up more than much larger cities. A one-bedroom can cost $1600, higher than
in Atlanta or Chicago. House prices have doubled in the past few years, up
more than $50,000 just in the past year. And like other cities struggling
with gentrification, the non-white population has suffered the most. In
some Charleston neighborhoods, nearly half of the African-American
residents have left, as even in areas riddled by higher crime rates,
four-bedroom apartments are renting for up to $3000 a month, with students
snatching them up. Meanwhile, struggling families, many working in
low-paying food or hospitality services and forced to depend on federal
help for housing costs, are limited to section-8 housing voucher maximums
of just $1026 for a three-bedroom. As longtime Charleston resident King
Grant-Davis told the Charleston City Paper, "Gentrification in itself may
not be bad, but the part of pricing racial or ethnic groups out, making
accommodations too expensive for them because of their economic status,
that's bad."

I would definitely NOT drive it like it is – especially with no a/c. But, I’m

Check out Honolulu. They have declared war on the homeless.

They are worried about their image. Concerned about scaring away the
tourists.
They do have people that try to get the homeless into shelters etc but
many of them have issues like drug addiction and do not want to be helped.
The current solution is to run them out of Waikiki so that the tourists
won't see them sprawled on the sidewalks.
That, of course, is pushing them into other areas where the locals are
not any happier to see them.

Part of the problem is the outrageous price of housing in Hawaii. The
working poor are being driven out.

I wonder how long the odometer has not been working. 160,000 miles is nothing.
It is very nice looking. Is that black or a really dark blue?

I had to have the blower motor replaced on my 124 diesel and it was kind of a
bear. Is the blower motor as bad on these. I am actually interested in this
car if it is not a money pit.

The list speaks of neglect. How can you drive a car with all those little
annoying problems? Cumulatively they comprise motoring misery.
