Re: [MBZ] Wilton needs this for his new ride

2016-07-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Sounds like a similar experience I had with my big brother when he had a 1968
Pontiac Firebird with the 400 CI engine, Hurst factory shifter and some
outrageous stock rear end. It was yellow with a black top.

He picked me up after basketball practice one night and drove me home.

When I walked in to the house, Mom and Dad were sitting in their usual spots in
the family room. Mom puts down her book, Dad his Wall Street Journal, and both
say almost simultaneously, “Are you OK? You look like you just saw a ghost.”

“Nope. I’m fine.” Head to room without further discussion.

First and last time I ever rode with my brother when he had that car.

Re: [MBZ] Wilton needs this for his new ride

2016-07-13 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
One of my teachers in high school would sometimes entertain us with tales
from his youth in small town Iowa, he and his brothers would compete to see
who had the fastest ride, which of course meant there had to be a test of
some sort to prove who had the fastest ride. He recounted how one day his
big brother rolled up to the house in a '56 or '57 Chevy, rolled down the
window and told him to get in for a "test ride". Teacher (probably about
15 or 16 at the time) knew he was in trouble because the car was shaking
really hard at idle, his brother had to shout to be heard, and there were
no seat belts of course. He couldn't show any fear in front of his older
brother, so he obliged and got in, and the resulting "test drive" was so
terrifying that when they returned home, he got out and turned to his
brother and basically said "You win, and I am never going to ride in
another car with you driving again."

So those stories illustrate where my ideas for a rat rod come from.
Probably not going to get there, messing around with mechanical injection
compression ignition...

I'll keep y'all updated for sure, Meade.
I wish some other power company "could" supply us, but Duke and the major power
company in South Florida seem to have a lot of influence with the state
regulatory board, so about all we could do is move to an area served by one of
the co-op power companies.

Thanks, Rick. I tried googling but must have used the wrong words. I pass this

My ideal rat rod would simply exude danger and power, with no gimmicks.
Painted with primer, no added nothing but noise and power.

In college one summer Saturday night I was driving home after a second
shift at a food warehouse, '63 Beetle. Coming up on a red light, there's
a jacked up camaro, 70's, primer paint, huge slicks on the rear axle.
He's stopped in the right lane, I'm coasting up the left trying to time it
so I hit the light rolling in first and can blast right by him. I time it
right, blow right by with the flat four air cooled engine wailing and
shift into second, watching him the rear view mirror now.

I see and hear him launch, front end lifts but the front wheels don't,
smoke rolling from both rear slicks and it sound like no muffler at all on
that V8.

I started rolling up windows and reaching to close the sunroof (huge
canvas affair), too late. Camaro burns past, tire smoke engulfs me, I
kept smiling until I fell asleep later that night.

Re: [MBZ] Rear Window Failed Down/Open

2016-07-13 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Does that school of thought like to employ designs that encourage
"self-correcting mistakes"? For example, child rolls up power window, pinches
fingers, "Waah!!!". Child learns (self-corrects) not to pinch fingers in
power windows, and that self-correcting remains in force until death bed.

Re: [MBZ] Wilton needs this for his new ride

2016-07-13 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes

I am now a UROlogist!

Seriously, I am a troublemaker in the local community. I called myself
an agitator until a friend pointed out that was a no-no around here as
that was what the old crackas called the black folks who came here to
stir things up back in the 60s. It is still a bit of sore point though
my good friend who was a major agitator back then loves it and eggs me
on. I hear there is a future in it. Maybe when we finally win the
Waawww it will be OK.

I speak Truth to Power and they don't like it. I am a part of a cabal
in that regard, they fear our presence at their schemings. Even when we
aren't there we live in their minds. The gummint does not like the
subjects to speak up, esp when some of them are very invested in their
shady schemes. Certain elected officials either go out of their way to
avoid us, or make it a point to berate us for calling them out on their
foolishness (which is way too easy to do, but generally fun). Others
have become friends, which is interesting. The paper does, however,
like it as it gives them something interesting to print and occasionally
generates an ongoing letters-to-the-editor thread on the editorial
page. I give great quotes for articles and TV interviews, write LTEs
and op-eds, generally be a PITA.

My wife joined in 3 or 4 years ago with a really good LTE, and it got
her a reprimand at work from the head guy, first thing in the morning
even before she had seen the LTE (them good ol' boys have an early long
reach!) and 2 or 3 LTEs in response the next week or so, none of them
laudatory. At first she didn't even know what he was going on about,
and he wasn't too enthusiastic about it either but had to appease the
good ol' boys and report back she had been properly reprimanded. Her
boss liked it but told her to lay low for awhile... It was awesome,
it's great to cause headaches, dyspepsia, constipation, and high blood
pressure in the scalawags when they read the morning paper. I saw one
of them later, a state rep who had installed his brother (who owns a
Greek restaurant!) on the board of the place, and called him out on
that, he protested too much with much harrumphing and blathering, said
his brother knew about food service so could help the cafeteria
operations... I saw him a coupla weeks ago and was going to say hi but
he saw me coming and turned away. SCORE!!!

You know that old saying, when you throw a rock at a pack of dogs the
one that yelps is the one you hit...

When I was in 2nd grade, the principal (who I later learned to have been
a pedophile) called my mother for a conference and told her I was going
to be a JD (school lingo for juvenile delinquent) unless she got me
under control. Though I peaked early it did not manifest at that time
with the ladies. Later on in HS I was a honorrollee and marginal JD,
and it did not manifest much either with the ladies. Now I am an AD
according to some commentators, and the ladies love me but, alas, having
just one (well, two if you count my daughter) I am unable to capitalize
on that achievement! Old Benzes seem to have no effect on their
assessments.

Re: [MBZ] Request for help

2016-07-13 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
That is correct. I had the powerco come and run a new line to the house
for 300A service. They came off the transformer on the pole with new
line, ran it to a junction box, then ran new underground line to my
meter box (which a powerco guy I know had given me off his truck a
coupla years prior, so even that was theirs). I had to supply a 3" PVC
conduit fitting on my meter box, they provided 3" conduit the rest of
the way to the junction box, and put in their meter on my box. I have
no idea why they didn't have a 3" fitting for the box ("we just don't do
it"), I had to go off to get one.

Basically anything electrical on their side of the meter is theirs (as
is the meter). It might be a local thing about the pipe and connector
thing on the house that the lines go into on their way to the meter.

Listers,

The local veterinary who has a 10-20,000 square foot animal hospital has

had

a failure of the power companies line from the pole to the clinic.
He's essentially out of business with the computer system, xray system,

and

A/C not working since the daily temps are in the 90F's around here.

Duke Power Company said they "would try to expedite" their repair order,
but Duke has not been "user friendly" in this area, so when it will get

fixed is

anyones guess.

His wife said they would rent a large portable diesel power until capable

of

powering the whole clinic if one was available since they will be losing a

great

deal of money every day they are down, and the animals under their care

will

be suffering.

Does anyone know what a company that rents portable power units would be
called and how listed on the internet?
They have three large A/C units, and probably use an equal amount of power
or more for other systems in the hospital.

Thanks,
Gerry

Try a company called "Big Rents". I use them from time to time when I need
a large piece of equipment for a short time.

They are a nationwide network of companies that rent heavy equipment for
just such an event as your friend has had. They do a complete package with
delivery of the item, then pick up. Price has always been quite reasonable
for what I got.

Rat rods are interesting. Some are pretty decent and some are junk but
all are different. I like car shows but I truly do not care if I ever
see another perfect big block Camaro trailer queen. I want to see cars
that are driven and not just polished.

Re: [MBZ] Rear Window Failed Down/Open

2016-07-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It’s a function of the “convenience module” in later models, from the W140 on.

The convenience module controls window operation and some other minor
functions, of which I can’t recall. Since it doesn’t have non-volatile memory
if power is lost to the module it needs the windows to be “synced” so that it
can properly control them. The module needs to know where the windows are
position-wise as well as what direction they’re moving. This is to manage the
auto up/down and reversing functions.

The process is typically to run the window all the way up and hold the button
in for ten seconds. Repeat for the down position, too. Once this is done for
each window it should work normally. Until the window is synced it will only
move a short distance with each press of the button. That’s what Bob is
experiencing right now.

Natural gas for a rental won’t happen. They don’t exist, or if they do, I’ve never seen one. The availability of fuel and difficulty in establishing a connection makes it near impossible to do. The volume of fuel required for a decent sized set would require a large connection and completely different metering and regulation than what is used for residential or commercial buildings.

Any rental will be a trailer mounted diesel set. They will have to employ an
electrician to make the connection to their building.

Based on Gerry’s description, 10kW won’t come close to cutting it. With three
AC units and the remaining loads, I’m guessing a 50kW would probably be a unit
that would do the job. That’s a wild guess, of course, without having more
details. An X-ray machine is a really horrible, nasty load for a generator,
too. Huge inrush currents that make voltage regulators go crazy.

Ring Power is another possibility, but that’s the local Caterpillar guys and
they will be stupid expensive.

Listers,

The local veterinary who has a 10-20,000 square foot animal hospital has had a
failure of the power companies line from the pole to the clinic.
He's essentially out of business with the computer system, xray system, and A/C
not working since the daily temps are in the 90F's around here.

Duke Power Company said they "would try to expedite" their repair order, but Duke has not
been "user friendly" in this area, so when it will get fixed is anyones guess.

His wife said they would rent a large portable diesel power until capable of
powering the whole clinic if one was available since they will be losing a
great deal of money every day they are down, and the animals under their care
will be suffering.

Does anyone know what a company that rents portable power units would be called
and how listed on the internet?
They have three large A/C units, and probably use an equal amount of power or
more for other systems in the hospital.

Thanks,
Gerry

Re: [MBZ] Rear Window Failed Down/Open

2016-07-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Nothing odd about this.

As Kaleb mentioned, your window(s) is/are out of sync. You need to re-sync
them and all should be well.

Have you disconnected the battery? That will cause the windows to get out of
sync.

Natural gas for a rental won’t happen. They don’t exist, or if they do, I’ve
never seen one.  The availability of fuel and difficulty in establishing a
connection makes it near impossible to do. The volume of fuel required for a
decent sized set would require a large connection and completely different
metering and regulation than what is used for residential or commercial
buildings.

He's essentially out of business with the computer system, xray system, and
A/C not working since the daily temps are in the 90F's around here.

Duke Power Company said they "would try to expedite" their repair order, but
Duke has not been "user friendly" in this area, so when it will get fixed is
anyones guess.

Thanks,
Gerry

Thats the only way I've ever seen a freewheel removed.
I discovered last night that the bolt (for lack of a better, or correct, term)
that goes through the wheel seems to be bent on the freewheel side. However the
bend is outside of the wheel so the wheel spins true, weird...

It's probably got caged bearings in it, in which case you can't take out the
right side balls and clean them without the freewheel remover, but you can
still take off the left side bearing cone and locknut and slide the axle out to
the right and pack some grease in there.
I suspect the bearing cones will be heavily pitted. Up to you whether to buy
new cones and balls or just grease it all up and put it back together.
If it's got loose balls, you can do pretty much anything you want with the
bearings without removing the freewheel, but it's a PITA to work on the right
side because it's buried behind the freewheel.

Removing a freewheel that hasn't been disturbed in 30 years is a different sort
of fun.
I'd suggest using the axle nut to hold the freewheel tool in full engagement,
clamp the tool in a vise, and turn the wheel with both hands.
As soon as it starts turning, you've got to stop and loosen the axle nut.

Gerry - Please keep us updated, it's great to solve a real-world problem!

I would imagine that a generator running on natural gas would be less
expensive than diesel fuel, but sourcing the natural gas could be an issue
all by itself.

Another thought: Maybe time to see if another electrical power provider
would like to swoop in and take away Duke's customer?

[MBZ] Request for help

2016-07-13 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Listers,

The local veterinary who has a 10-20,000 square foot animal hospital has had a
failure of the power companies line from the pole to the clinic.
He's essentially out of business with the computer system, xray system, and
A/C not working since the daily temps are in the 90F's around here.

Duke Power Company said they "would try to expedite" their repair order, but
Duke has not been "user friendly" in this area, so when it will get fixed is
anyones guess.

Thanks,
Gerry
