2017-06-20 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
At the big ones, yes - if you stop. I've seen $150 quoted, but don't
remember where that was. Fuel can be three times higher than at the smaller
airports, if they even have 100LL.
On paved runways, you replace tires when the tread is too thin. On grass
runways you replace tires when the rubber dry rots/cracks.

Yup, time to move out of the stone age with GA engines. I've been
researching electronic ignition and fuel injection for the Tailwind's
engine - all it takes is money, redundant electrical systems, etc. . . . .
I still won't get that kind of mileage, but will be far better than most.

Re: [MBZ] OT: OK, Don, was that you in the Cessna?

2017-06-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I was flying a Cherokee one day and was in the pattern and was cleared
to land. A minute or two later I hear the tower call "United NNN you
have traffic 2 miles on short final, please go around NOW." (this was a
737)

United pilot comes back with something not particularly friendly,
questioning the command, Tower says, "Sir, I told you to go around NOW
for Cherokee on short final, please comply immediately."

United pilot reluctantly acknowledges, I saw him go over me down the
runway to make his circle to come back around to land. By the time I
landed and switched to ground control I had missed the fun of the Tower
telling him what to do to land.

I felt kinda good when the 737 taxied by the FBO where I was standing
next to the plane so I waved to them, did not get any response back.

Oh, yes! I learned at a 1700' narrow grass strip and flew out of it for
many years afterwards. Our current 2500' grass strip feels luxurious. I
have to be very conscious of planning a touch down point near where I want
to taxi off the runway instead of landing on the first 50' of the runway
like I usually do at home when flying into the usual paved airport with
5000' + runways. The two mile long runways look like they go forever . . .

Controlled airports do reduce the number of surprises from those who don't
both to use their radios and fly non-standard patterns that I've
encountered at a lot of un-controlled fields (like ours).

Remarkably normal kid for being stinking rich.
Burbank is a pretty small airport, I'm surprised they'd make a big thing out of
landing there, lots of small planes land there these days.My favorite thing
about flying into Burbank is that they don't use a jetbridge so you can enter
and exit both ends of the plane, super speeds boarding and deplaning.
My second favorite thing there is that if you fly from Burbank to Las Vegas on
Friday night (which is most of the flights) the plane is full of strippers...

Re: [MBZ] OT: OK, Don, was that you in the Cessna?

2017-06-20 Thread M. Mitchell Marmel via Mercedes
I did a night landing in a Cessna 152 at Burbank Airport in 1982 with an
instructor. Remarkably similar...

Reminds me of a Bob Stevens cartoon where a towerman with a sense of humor
cleared Bob's Mooney for takeoff, then warned the 747 behind him to "watch
out for wake turbulence from the departing Mooney"... ;-)

That should be selling for WAY more than it's currently at, which should be WAY
