Re: [MBZ] big oil dying (again)

2017-06-29 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
The transmission point is addressed in the article.

Yes solar power takes space, but there are lots of rooftops. As for acres
we did the math on a half section, and solar is a much better return than
farming, with no yearly capital or labor input.

As for pure electrics, fewer moving parts is always a plus. Electrics are
super simple mechanically. Less maintenance offsets the up front costs. It
is in the article.

If electricity is generated locally and consumed locally, there is less
need for distribution. Distribution is also a major source of loss, which
is why we are seeing DC lines being put in for long distance transmission
now.

I had a senior PhD from a top 5 company tell me over dinner the other night
that electric is the future of aviation. That surprised me, but when you
think about everything that has come out of darpa, this is not such a big
stretch.

It will be interesting to see what markets embrace electric vehicles first.
400,000 tesla model 3 cars is a lot of orders for a car that doesnt exist,
but a lot of people probably said landing a rocket was impossible also.

Those who say a thing cannot be done are frequently interrupted by those
doing it.

Re: [MBZ] uh oh Oil Thread

2017-06-29 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Yea, I usually don’t worry about it. When I had my diesel, I was more
concerned. In older cars, I was never convinced synthetic was really
necessary. This BMW always had Mobil 1 – according to the records/receipts.
So, I thought I would stick with it. The only reason I even thought about it
was because I wondered if I should change it myself. With the Schaeffer oil it
dropped the price of the oil change down almost $15 and at that point, it cost
about the same as I would spend buying oil and filter. So, it was a no brainer
at that point.

I've given up on worrying about oil, if it meets a reasonably current
specification I use it and don't worry about it.

Our '05 VW Golf TDI REQUIRES a specific spec of oil which is relatively hard to
find. Valvoline makes the only oil that meets the spec that you can find at
most FLAPS. I started using it in the pickup because the Valvoline place is
easier to get into than the Mobil place... Pickup doesn't seem to care.

Wait 5000 miles and pull a sample for analysis, then you'll really know whats
going on in there...

Re: [MBZ] Spam

2017-06-29 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
My parents were married in 1968. On their first date they were in Germany. My
father was in the army (US) and my mother was a nurse. She and her friend
decided to travel Europe working as civilian nurses for a few years after
graduating from nursing school. She and her friend met a couple of handsome
young GIs stationed in Nuremberg. My mother decided to cook dinner for the
group and it was fried spam with cheese on it! She burned it. HA! But, I
guess it worked; they were married after a year. Growing up we ate a lot of
spam. I hated it as a kid because we had it so much. So, for a long time I
wouldn't eat it. But, several years ago I decided to give it a try again when
my wife and I went camping. I like it now! Of course, everything seems to
taste a little better cooked over a campfire.

Typically there is a knock sensor on the engine, and ignition timing is
retarded when you get knock, may also richen the fuel.

The difference can be 10% or more, depending on driving conditions and fuel,
but usually it's cheaper to use premium.

Yesterday on the Great Iowa Tractor Ride (2 1/2 days, 250 miles) on a
country road, I was passed by a white 300TE I'd guess 87-89, with SD
license plate. It was great to see the car in use! Fantastic
weather! Yesterday, our group was second out, leaving at 7 am. I
never thought I'd want a heat houser for the tractor ride at the end
of June! It was a Nippy 49ºF at the start. I wanted a heat houser
yesterday morning!

I saw the guy with the monkey wards tractor. I was behind him in
2009. Interesting tractor.

Denny Glade got a 4-71 jimmy diesel out of a junkyard and stuck it in
his Oliver 1955 to replace the original 4-71. You could hear that
howling miles away. The engine had not run in 30 years.

Zach bought an Oliver 70 with a stuck engine on June 17. He had it
there running on June 25.

The Ugliest tractor was probably a Minneapolis-Moline U, driven by the
younger Herman.
