If one could get Febi at a good price, I suppose it's worth a try.
Sourced from Febi, made in Germany, I'd put that on one of my cars.
And if the ones you get say made in China, I suppose you could resell them on
eBay and recover most of your money.

My bad. I remembered wrong: The FCP flex disks (for w126) were Febi Bilstein
(FCP only claimed they were OEM). The box says assembled in Germany from
German and Polish parts. The actual flex disk has "Made in Germany" molded
into the rubber.
Several other parts in that order were Lemforder so I got confused. But not the

[MBZ] Pressure and volume

2017-07-14 Thread clay via Mercedes
I am doing the AC recharge in the w126 cars today and have had an interesting
learning curve.

FIRST, check to make sure the system is complete with Schrader valves! High
side did not have one and after charging the AC and getting nice cold air, I
tried to unhook the manifold. It all came spewing out in a great hurry. Must
be why PO had installed R134 fittings. I am going to be swabbing oily dye mist
from all manner of items for a long while.

I evacuated the system once more (it had been tested overnight) and did a
refill. Well, sort of. It calls for 3.3# of R12. There is a
pressure/temperature chart that gives pressures based on outside temp. Using
that, I reached the required pressures, but am short on volume? Oil injected
was only 2.0oz, and Duster cans gave a bit over a pound. Vent temps are only
60f.

Do I proceed with intalling the rest of the charge to at least 3.0#?

At the moment I am doing the vac hold test on the other car prior to recharge.

Re: [MBZ] UPDATE! RE: OT: Land Yacht problem

2017-07-14 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Look to see I there is any kind of carb float bowl preheat provision (e.g. to
reduce emissions). There may also be a missing insulating gasket between the
car and manifold. Or look for places the fuel line is too close to hot stuff,
like the exhaust manifold.

I had a 1973 240Z with side-draft (Hitachi?) carbs and there was a water
jacket around the float bowls. During warmup, engine coolant circulated around
the float bowls to warm the fuel so it would vaporize better. There was a
thermostat intended to stop this coolant flow then the coolant reached 120F (as
I recall) but mine had failed in the open position (full flow). The thermostat
looked like a simple plumbing adapter so I didn’t realize what it was for
almost 10 years. It drove me nuts but only during really hot weather and at
high altitudes, typically driving coast to coast for PCS moves.

Oops, Fred's right.
My 190Dt takes 2024101315 and 1244100615

My 2.3-16 takes 2024101315 and 2014101615

Anybody still have a 2.2 or 2.3-8v?

I still recommend inspect the tank, replace the fuel pump, rebuild
the carburetor, replace the ignition controller (probably
Duraspark II), replace plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.

It's silly to put effort and time into troubleshooting to find and
replace one of those items when it's good sense to address them
all.  Then if there is still a problem, those can be considered
"likely good" and that will sure aid in the troubleshooting.  But
there is a good chance it will fix the issue.

2017-07-14 Thread fmiser via Mercedes
> Donald wrote:

By 1977, there should be a charcoal canister that captures the
gasoline vapor from the carburetor bowl vent. If there is gas
smell, either that isn't in place, or the gas smell is from
somewhere else - like in the throat of the carburetor since it was
just trying to run and stalled. Or a leak in the lines before the
carburetor. Or a stuck float valve that isn't shutting off the
fuel into the carburetor so the bowl is overflowing.

> He took off the air
> filter and said he could hear the gas boiling in the carb.

If so, there is another problem. The carburetor should never be
getting _that_ hot.

If it is, then I'd look for a non-functioning carburetor
pre-heat. Usually this is a valve in the exhaust pipe that is
shut when the engine is cold and forces exhaust across through the
intake manifold (separate chamber) to heat the carburetor. If
this is stuck in the "cold" position, I could see the carburetor
might get hot enough to have fuel boiling.

> So, apparently the battery did not fix the problem!

I can't say I'm surprised. :(

I still recommend inspect the tank, replace the fuel pump, rebuild
the carburetor, replace the ignition controller (probably
Duraspark II), replace plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.

Re: [MBZ] Very loud knocking noise in my W123 300TD

2017-07-14 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
...and that would be?

Let's see when they show up if there is anything identifying who made them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a parts snob. If I can get a Lemförder part instead
of the dealer's, I'll go for it - but I know what I'm getting there, too.

So many of these aftermarket and even OEMs have begun to outsource stuff that
you're never sure where it's being made any more. Meyle, Febi and others are
doing this, so the brand name gets diluted/diminished.

I just feel really strongly about the integrity of some parts, and when I
replace them I want to be darned sure I'm putting a quality part in as a
replacement, that's all.

And where has Curley been through all this? I've been missing his acerbic
banter and Andrew abuse

The Self Leveling Suspension is generally unique to the wagon.

* I like the wagons, and like the SLS.

* I have a few wagons, none with good engines. One just worn out.

* I had SLS pump trouble on one of the wagons and gather parts and
got new seals and managed to get one non-leaking pump. But it's
  not really in good shape.

* Every wagon _I_ have looked at has an abused SLS system. The
best have had old, cruddy oil. The worst are dry so the pump
  runs without lube!

* I have a few sedans with viable engines - but no SLS pump drive

* To retain SLS, I need to put a SLS head on. Or machine the
sedan head. Or figure out a way to use some other pump, maybe
electric. Or buy a "new" pump for about the same - or more -
  than a parts car.

* Therefore, I would like to improve my wagon situation and so am
on the lookout for good cars, parts cars, or engines.

Re: [MBZ] Very loud knocking noise in my W123 300TD

2017-07-14 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I'm all for saving a buck, without question. I also recognize when it's false
economy.

I did flex discs, center bearing and carrier on the 300SEL. I paid for MB flex
discs, bearing, and a Corteco bearing carrier. I could have saved around $150
by going aftermarket, but looking at the available products, they were all
manufactured in China or Taiwan and cost less than HALF what the dealer charges.

Now we all know that MB is in this thing to make money, much of which comes
from their parts sales. That being said, part of that cost covers supplier
vetting and guarantees the quality of said parts.

I've gone over this too many times in the past, but to reiterate: it's too, too
easy to cut corners on rubber parts, period. Add more carbon (cheap) and less
virgin rubber (expensive) and the physical difference is imperceptible up to a
point. Multiply that difference to scale and now your part can be sold at a
very nice profit while still being much cheaper than the OE part.

Mercedes flex disc: $150
Febi flex disc: $50
URO flex disc: $35

If Mercedes' markup is 40% that means their cost is around $105. If the Febi
or URO parts are marked up similar amounts, what does that tell you about their
costs? That means the cost of the Febi is around $35.

Since Mercedes doesn't manufacture their parts, but the others do, they
probably have higher fixed cost. So if their costs are higher due to
manufacturing overhead, they're spending a smaller percentage on materials most
likely.

Which part do you think will have better quality materials?

When it's a critical part such as suspension, driveline or brakes, I'm not
going cheap. Not only is it false economy, it's dangerous.

At least that's my take on the whole thing. One could argue that many people do
it on the cheap, which is totally their choice. I want the reliability and
peace of mind knowing that my flex disc isn't going to fail going down the
highway a year or two after I bought it.

hear the gas boiling in the carb.  So, apparently the battery did not fix the
problem!  It is weird that it idled for an hour with no problems drove around
for 45 minutes with no problems and then wouldn't run later.

I suggested he find a shop where he can talk to an old mechanic that has worked
on Ford carbs.  It shouldn't be that hard to find the 460 was used on a lot of
cars and they kept using it in the bigger ford trucks even after discontinuing
it in the cars.

Simple test for battery condition Put a load tester on it and watch the

The problem description does NOT suggest a battery with low voltage.. It cranks

Re: [MBZ] Very loud knocking noise in my W123 300TD

2017-07-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On a 124, failure of a front flex disc at speed can allow it to thrash
around (driven by the forward motion of the car via the differential) with
such violence that the airbag(s) will deploy. The tunnel area just behind
the transmission gets beat all to hell, there are pix of the mess on Peach
Parts I think.

I think such a failure would cause similar damage on a 123, minus the
airbag deployment.

Remember if the flex disk fails at speed it trashes the car, this is false
economy. Let's think back to when you ignored the list advice and replaced just
one sphere. How that work out for you? I'll remind you, all the warnings given
to you here came true...

Febi/Bilstein is a German company, however, that doesn't mean that's where the
parts come from. I've seen Febi parts that are from China and Taiwan.

Again, I understand the desire to save a buck, but this is not a place I would
be cutting corners.

Corteco makes a very high quality center bearing carrier. The bearing "kit" is
be sourced from the dealer, probably under $30 and contains a new boot and
other hardware bits you won't get from a third party supplier.

Do not cheap out on rubber parts or you'll be doing this job again in under
five years.

Flex discs from Mercedes aren't that expensive in most cases. Front flex disc
is around $125 from the dealer, I believe. Rear is the same.

Febi and Beck-Arnley will be cheap Chinee stuff.

OEM bearing bracket is triple the price of Febi or Beck Arnley ($150 vs.
$50)... Flex disks are $47 per (Febi) from AutohausAZ.

If Andrew is lucky, just a flex disc is at fault, _AND_ he will get it
fixed prior to catastrophic failure. Flex discs are the weakest link and
require periodic replacement, and as a bonus a bad flex disc can be
determined with a visual inspection.

Yeah, and I wouldn't be driving it much like they, either. Driveline failures
at speed tend to be catastrophic.

2017-07-14 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
It's definitely a drive train component that's making noise when
loaded/unloaded from what you describe.

That would be U joints, flex discs and CV joints as far as I can think of.

If you get the back end off the ground so you can turn the drive shaft and rear
wheels it should be easy to identify.

Something is wrong with the driveshaft or a half-axle. If you can make the
noise change by weaving side to side, it is a half-axle. If that has no
effect on the noise, then either a flex disc, the center carrier bearing,
or a u-joint is probably the cause.

That's my guess.

"This has been going on for some time"

Nice to wait for something to get to the point of destruction.
