They are and continue to break the law. The spots are for handicapped people to
use when they need them. I have no guilt about reporting inconsiderate people.
The point of my complaint is they promised one rate and then raised it without
even telling me why or when.
I don't want to change places. This is convenient location and I am comfortable

I finally settled on:

Disc Brake Pad Set - Front - Akebono
Disc Brake Pad Set - Rear - Akebono
Disc Brake Rotor - Front (284mm) - Genuine Mercedes
Disc Brake Rotor - Rear (258mm) - Zimmermann

On these I got a discount of $16.16 and free shipping on

Interestingly, my order is coming from three different places:

- Windsor, CT

- Carson, CA

Thank you for the tip, Kaleb.

I’ve ranted about this enough in the past, but our poor performance in solar
production, despite being the “Sunshine State”, is due largely to the utilities
having our state legislators in their pockets and doing everything they can do

Back when I re-habbed my '83 240D to be a low buck commuter I put the cheapest
rotors Rusty could get on it. The name was something weird like "Genuine". IIRC
they were $25 a piece. Worked fine for the 25,000 miles I put on the car until
an oil cooler line burst ending its life.

There are a bunch of aftermarket disc manufacturers, but I don’t think any of
them are the OEM suppliers.  This was something Rusty used to talk about, if I
recall correctly.  I can understand if price is an issue, but I’ve always gone
with the dealer or OE brake parts (except pads) as they’re not that much more
than aftermarket, and you know what you’re getting.

I would be really, really reluctant to put a $23.00 brake disc on my car, no
matter who’s name is on it.

I stick with Akebono ceramic pads just because I hate wheel dust.  It’s
especially important on the wife’s car, as she’s deadly on brakes.  Used to go
through a set of organic pads in 15k.  I put ceramics in her car and they go
for a long, long time.

Probably just the discount. Discs are about $80 my cost at the dealer, and I
thing they were about $77.50 with the discount. The pads were around $60 with
the discount, which is about the going retail for them. A good deal, not a
great deal. Still cheaper than buying them locally and saves me the time to go
pick them up and the tax I would have to pay Skeletor (Rick Scott, governor.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Help us make space in our warehouse by saving 15% on Clearance parts

2017-07-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

2017-07-18 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Was that clearance or just the discount? I am looking at their
clearance items for several of my cars and they only show a couple of
pages of clearance items that I dont need.

On 7/18/2017 4:12 PM, Dan--- via Mercedes wrote:

Thanks, Kaleb!

I bought a set of OE front discs and some Akebono (ceramic) pads for the E320.
With the discount I saved about $5.00 over my cost from the dealer, but I
didn't pay tax or have to go pick them up, so that's worth something.

I broke the key on my dad's little John Deere tractor so I went to the
dealer to get one. I took all the papers with serial numbers etc and
tell the guy I want a key, he grabs one off a display. They were all
the same for all the little tractors... I didn't get that, as any
dumbass with even a quarter of a brain could just go buy one and steal a
tractor.

I selected Brembo rotors for the front brakes, but my only choices for the
rears are:
- Bosch QuietCast $23.99 Made in Italy, shipping wt 7.690
- Manufacture Quality: Aftermarket
- Bosch QuietCast $25.74 Made in Italy, shipping wt 10.000
- Manufacture Quality: Aftermarket
- Zimmermann $32.24 Not specified, shipping wt 7.090
- Manufacture Quality: OEM
- Genuine MB $45.74 Made in Germany, shipping wt 7.000
- Manfacture Quality: Genuine

I'm thinking the heaver Bosch is what I should get.

Going back to the front rotors, Brembo is the lightest:

- Bosch QuietCast $36.74 Made in Italy, shipping wt 14.320
- Manufacture Quality: Aftermarket
- Genuine MB $64.49 Not specified, shipping wt 14.491
- Manufacture Quality: Genuine
- Brembo $45.74 Made in Italy, shipping wt 13.150
- Manufacture Quality: OEM

Maybe I should make another choice?

Should I get wear sensors, too?

What he said or buy any "old" travel trailer which has a shower. If it's too
hot, buy a cheap AC and stick it in a window. Also, RV trailers are sometimes
for rent in RV parks. I saved a ton of money doing that when I was transferred
to Atlanta for several years.

The "OEM" replacement flex disks from FCP Euro were Febi. The center
support was Beck-Arnley.

The rear flex disk, as suspected, was shredded. It had no markings so I
don't know the brand. When it blew it caused the center support bearing to
fail. The front flex disk was old but still sound but of course I replaced
it as well. It appears to have been original to the car. My tech
confirmed that aftermarket drive line parts are no bargain, which confirms
what everyone on the list told me.

Lesson learned. Who gets the pepper jelly?

A long time back (circa 1988?) I was working at JFKIA in the Pan Am terminal. I
was driving a Jeep, parked on the rooftop parking and locked the door with my
keys still in the ignition. At least I didn't leave the engine running as I had
in my previous lockout blunder with my brother's VW beetle. Anyway, I asked
each of my coworkers to lend me their GM car keys for a few minutes. Armed with
about a half-dozen sets I went back up. I had tried about half of the keys
before the lock cooperated.

I'm pretty sure that technique would not be effective any more, especially not
on a Mercedes!

Craig,
I locked the key in my Toyota pick up truck several years ago and was getting
ready to smash a window when someone suggested the local fire department. I
called them and, sure enough, they came over with a “slim jim” tool and a few
seconds later the door was open. They refused a tip and a beer. :-)
I would think that a good locksmith could do the same thing in a short time.
Good luck,
Addison

A long time back (circa 1988?) I was working at JFKIA in the Pan Am terminal. I
was driving a Jeep, parked on the rooftop parking and locked the door with my
keys still in the ignition. At least I didn't leave the engine running as I had
in my previous lockout blunder with my brother's VW beetle. Anyway, I asked
each of my coworkers to lend me their GM car keys for a few minutes. Armed with
about a half-dozen sets I went back up. I had tried about half of the keys

I'm pretty sure that technique would not be effective any more, especially not

Craig,
I locked the key in my Toyota pick up truck several years ago and was getting
ready to smash a window when someone suggested the local fire department. I
called them and, sure enough, they came over with a “slim jim” tool and a few
seconds later the door was open. They refused a tip and a beer.  :-)
I would think that a good locksmith could do the same thing in a short time.
Good luck,

[MBZ] AMG

2017-07-18 Thread clay via Mercedes
I attended the AMG 50th gathering the other day. Some of the cars were
interesting. Looks like they really appeal to the bottom feeders and gear
heads. The newest stuff was prastic, and the older cars were all rebuilt or
barn finds in the process. I figured I should look for one for the stable,
since the old ones are pretty crusty and cheap.

I did not find anything that suited. But here are a few cars that might pique
the interest of others

Are you sure that you want to make trouble for them?

The hotel is trying to get more money out of you, but everyone needs to
eat. If you are not happy, then go somewhere else, but why try to make
trouble?
If there are handicapped folks who are in need of the parking, they will
likely complain on their own.

Why rock the boat?
"Getting even" may leave you feeling guilty and regretting it.

they'll assume you caused it if they suddenly get $380 worth of tickets

Thanks, Kaleb!

I bought a set of OE front discs and some Akebono (ceramic) pads for the E320.
With the discount I saved about $5.00 over my cost from the dealer, but I
didn't pay tax or have to go pick them up, so that's worth something.

[MBZ] Struttin on my lunch break

2017-07-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Back at the beginning of June I took my Jetta to work after it had sat a week
while we were on vacation. On the highway it felt like one of the rear tires
was soft, the rear of the car felt like it wasn't completely under my control.
I didn't know what was wrong but it didn't feel good to drive so I parked it.
Two weeks ago it occurred to me it might be rear struts, I did the bounce test
on the rear of the car and sure enough the driver's side bounced more than the
passenger's.
Yesterday I ordered new rear struts from my local Federated Auto Parts store.
$230ish after tax for the pair. These were the whole assembly not just the
shocks, I figured the springs were probably tired too.
Last night I took the car to game night and realized I could hear the driver's
rear strut make a clunk every time it hit a bump, confirmation!

Two bolts for this job which doesn't take into account what a PITA it is to get
the bottom mount out of the lower arm. Fortunately the lower arm is hollow so
you can shove something in there (I used 4' of 1 1/8" angle iron) to lever the
lower arm down to permit the strut to come out. I also learned on the passenger
side that if you jack up both sides of the car you get a little more droop
which is critical when the shock isn't dead.
Still it only took me right on an hour including cleaning up. Car drives as it
should now.

The central lock pump is working properly. It's the door actuators which
are not all working properly. In addition, the driver's door lock cylinder
turns correctly (top of key forward) to unlock the door, but it does not
turn at all top of key backward to lock the door. The passenger door lock
turns both directions with some difficulty.

Once everything is correct, I will always lock our car with the key in the
door, which, of course, eliminates the problem of leaving the keys inside.

I locked the key in my Toyota pick up truck several years ago and was getting

called them and, sure enough, they came over with a “slim jim” tool and a few
seconds later the door was open. They refused a tip and a beer. :-)

I have my granddaddy's 72 510 wagon sitting in a storage bin after I
pulled it out of the barn where it had sat for 20some years. I guess it
has been maybe 35 years now since it was parked. "ran when parked!" It
is in pretty good shape, other than it has become a hantavirus hangout,
the body has a few bends in it but nothing bad. Baby blue, it's all
there. I did some reading on these, there are active groups of guys
upgrading these with newer Nissan turbo motors and running gear,
apparently it is not too hard to do with a bit of welding in some new
mounts and such, and a lot of later bits fit in/on these easily. Lot of
racing uses for them and just hot rodding.

Seeing the light of day after 20some years

I ended up searching on the net for "auto lockout albuquerque, nm" and got a
number of hits. I took the first one.

They came out and used small, inflatable air bags, which they slid between the
door and the body. A few pumps on the inflator bulbs, and they had enough
opening to slide a long rod about 1/8" in diameter in. They were unsuccessful
at pulling up the door button, but were successful in snagging my keys off the
center console.

That cost $120 and I can submit it to USAA for reimbursement.

A W124 should be highly if not completely resistant to a Slim Jim.
I locked my keys in my Citation twice back in the 1980s.
The first time was at MSU, where a campus cop slim jimmed it in under five
seconds. The 2nd time I bought a Slim Jim at Carquest and did it myself, the
actual Slim Jim work took about 15 minutes, but would have been a matter of
seconds if I stuck it in precisely the right spot the first time.
Haven't used the Slim Jim in nearly 30 years, anybody want to buy it?

Anyway, the job they did for Craig used one of these, look like it costs about
4x what I paid for the Slim Jim in the 1980s:

Sorry to hear that.
Best wishes for her recovery.

Being this is a W124, and assuming you plan on keeping it long term, what about
remote entry? I may have a kit which would work.
JimC posted instructions on doing it at the vac pump in the trunk, but did you
say the central lock pump wasn't working currently?

That cost $120 and I can submit it to USAA for reimbursement.

Any thoughts on where to start looking? I need a basic kitchen and a place to

Re: [MBZ] This is a shock to the oil companies

2017-07-18 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
That's the rental I had. Lots of fancy displays and stuff. In the three weeks I
had mine I averages around 39 mpg. Tiny fuel tank, like ten gallons. I think I
put less than 15 gallons of gas in it for the three weeks.

Just for grins I looked at what one cost new - depending on how it was
optioned, about $25-$30k. However, there were a number of local dealers that
had demos or program cars with low miles and full warranties you could purchase
in the mid teens. That would make sense.

Eight year warranty on the battery and related components.
