Re: [MBZ] OT - Guns - Pistols, Really...

2017-11-19 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I can't say enough about the value of dry-fire practice when it comes to
training trigger control.
I have also found "laser bullets", like by LaserLyte to be helpful. They go in
the chamber like a snap cap but don't extract when you cycle the slide. The
laser fires when the firing pin hits it. Don't bother with their fancy
electronic targets; just the laser will show your hits and also if you are
steady (smears if gun is moving). Here is one such:
https://www.amazon.com/LaserLyte-LT-9-Laser-Trainer-9MM/dp/B004NKY23E/
Unfortunately they don't come in .22LR (too small for the battery).
The best part is you can dry-fire practice anywhere and the only thing you are
missing is recoil and noise.

Since I decided to take the week off, I have a number of car related
things queued up to do in my leisure time…

Yesterday I replaced the stops on the rear hatch, as the rubber part
of both had deteriorated to the point where the rubber was pretty much
gone. Maybe all of five minutes to do, and my rear hatch now shuts
with a nice “squish” sound as the latch pulls it closed. I’ve noticed
this is a common issue on the sedans as well.

I’m referring to the rubber “wedges” that are on the sides of the
trunk opening of the W210 sedans. There are similar things on the
wagon rear hatch as well, which is what I replaced.

Today was driver’s lower seat (horsehair) pad. Got a new one from
Mercedes this past week, so I had it all ready to go. The seats on the
W210 are probably one of the easiest seats to remove on a Mercedes
that I’ve encountered. Move it back, take out the front bolts. Move it
forward, take out the back bolts. Unplug the connectors in the front
that are really easy to get to, then pop a trim panel off to remove
the seat belt anchor point and out it comes.

I just sat on the seat on the garage floor to release the cardboard
strips on the bottom edge of the leather cover, and the cover and
horsehair pad slid right off the seat frame to the front. There are
some nylon clips that have to be released to get the cover off, but
that took about five minutes to get them all loose. Then off with the
leather cover, stretch it out over the new horsehair pad, and clip the
retaining wires back on the nylon clips (this is what gives the seat
cover the “pucker” where there are seams between the pads.)

Slide the horsehair pad with leather cover back onto the seat frame,
get it centered, sit on the seat so I can put the edges of the cover
back in the retaining grooves on the seat frame, and do the same on
the back edge.

Clean the interior carpet under the seat and tunnel, put the seat back
in, run the bolts down and reconnect the electricals.

Done!

Nice to have a seat that doesn’t lean to the left from years of use
any more. Yea!!

Tomorrow or Tuesday I believe I’m going to tackle the headliner. Big
job, especially on a wagon…

[MBZ] OT - Guns - Pistols, Really...

2017-11-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A follow up to my P22 issues:

Went to the range after work on Friday. Was still shooting to the left, but not
as much. I corrected my stance and worked on my grip, and that seemed to make
a difference. Interestingly, one of the drills we do at the range involves a
softball sized ball made of hard rubber. It gets tossed out on the ground and
you shoot it to move it downrange. Or at least that’s the idea…

I had a tough time hitting it with my 9mm Walther PPQ, so I got out the P22 and
put a magazine in it. Amazingly, I hit the ball probably 8 out of 10 rounds.
Go figure.

So it’s getting better, but I’m satisfied that the issue is the shooter and not
the pistol. It got cleaned and put away in anticipation of being wrapped for
Christmas.

I’ve been keeping an eye open on the local ”guns for sale” web site for another
.22 pistol for my oldest son. He enjoys shooting and has only shot once in his
life, a few weeks ago when I took him to the range to get certified. He shot my
9mm Walther PPQ and did very well with some instruction from one of the RSOs,
who is a retired Special Forces guy and a certified NRA pistol coach. I was
pretty impressed with how well he did first time out. Much better than his
younger brother.

Anyway, I have been looking for a Ruger Mark III or IV as a good starting
pistol for him to use at the range. Easy to handle, cheap to shoot, something
good to start out with and become comfortable should he decide he wants to move
to something more substantial - or not.

I saw an ad for a Beretta U22 Neos with a 6” barrel on the local guns for sale
site. Never heard of such a pistol. Did a little research and saw that it was
a pretty good .22 pistol and got a lot of good reviews. The guy wanted $225
OBO, so I gave him a call and we arranged a meet. Luckily, he was only about 5
miles away from my house. Went over, took a look at the pistol, everything
checked out and I offered him $200, which he accepted.

Took the pistol to the range this morning.

Wow. Wicked awesome little pistol. I was able to get nice groupings within 3”
on a target 30 yards away. Almost no recoil or slap.

He’s really going to like this pistol.

Found an improvement on the old $5 thumb ratchet:
https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-81027-Drive-Gimbal-Ratchet/dp/B00EYTBVWO

My main problem with the cheap thumb ratchets isn't that they don't
swivel, but that they're usually too stiff and don't ratchet. I'd hope
a GearWrench product would ratchet more easily.

They still use horsehair pads on the 210?  And you had to replace it?  I
have never really heard of having to replace it on the newer cars.

Today was driver’s lower seat (horsehair) pad. Got a new one from Mercedes
this past week, so I had it all ready to go. The seats on the W210 are
probably one of the easiest seats to remove on a Mercedes that I’ve

out the back bolts. Unplug the connectors in the front that are really easy to
get to, then pop a trim panel off to remove the seat belt anchor point and out
it comes.

I just sat on the seat on the garage floor to release the cardboard strips on
the bottom edge of the leather cover, and the cover and horsehair pad slid
right off the seat frame to the front. There are some nylon clips that have to
be released to get the cover off, but that took about five minutes to get them
all loose. Then off with the leather cover, stretch it out over the new
horsehair pad, and clip the retaining wires back on the nylon clips (this is
what gives the seat cover the “pucker” where there are seams between the pads.)

Slide the horsehair pad with leather cover back onto the seat frame, get it
centered, sit on the seat so I can put the edges of the cover back in the
retaining grooves on the seat frame, and do the same on the back edge.

Clean the interior carpet under the seat and tunnel, put the seat back in, run
the bolts down and reconnect the electricals.

Done!

Nice to have a seat that doesn’t lean to the left from years of use any more.
Yea!!

had deteriorated to the point where the rubber was pretty much gone. Maybe all
of five minutes to do, and my rear hatch now shuts with a nice “squish” sound
as the latch pulls it closed. I’ve noticed this is a common issue on the
sedans as well.

I’m referring to the rubber “wedges” that are on the sides of the trunk opening
of the W210 sedans. There are similar things on the wagon rear hatch as well,
which is what I replaced.

Today was driver’s lower seat (horsehair) pad. Got a new one from Mercedes
this past week, so I had it all ready to go. The seats on the W210 are
probably one of the easiest seats to remove on a Mercedes that I’ve
encountered. Move it back, take out the front bolts. Move it forward, take
out the back bolts.

Yea!!

Tomorrow or Tuesday I believe I’m going to tackle the headliner. Big job,
especially on a wagon…

My biggest complaint isn’t the lack of discounts, it’s the inability to find
anything anymore. Even using their search feature won’t return hits for a lot
of really basic stuff.

Is it just me, or does their new web site suck majorly?

I ask because it seems near impossible to find anything anymore, and when you
do, the promo codes they offer don’t apply to the merchandise.

Case in point: I used to buy a lot of bulbs there, mainly because with the
20-25% off spiffs that are always available they were actually affordable. I
just went to replenish my supply of ash tray bulbs (Philips #2721) and hey
wouldn’t give me the 20% promo code. Said it didn’t apply to this item.

I bailed.

For the last week I keep getting teaser emails from them about using the promo
code and the cart I still have with stuff in it.

Idiots.
