Re: [MBZ] OT Roofing

2018-02-05 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I used Metro brand, from California. Had to order white, they only regularly
distribute dark colors (why anyone wants to fry in the summer I can't figure
out).

They are something like 30" long, and a complex roof will increase the cost,
but they can be easily cut. They screw at the top and hook over the shingle
below, very strong.

Deccra shingles are larger panels, and the guy I used to put mine on did not
recommend them, they don't look as nice and he has more trouble with them.
Also harder to install, they don't hook properly most of the time.

I think they are worth the extra cost, as they will outlast me, and the last
thing I want to do is replace a roof in my 80's.

Sounds like you got pretty good life out of it. I had wanted to get a metal
roof on our house when we did it in 2016 but was quoted in the $20,000 range
for our 900 sqft house. Thats absurd and I don't know why it was so high, in
Maine I'd expect around 1/3 of that price. Materials cost is higher for metal
but installation is much faster...We ended up paying about $6500 for
architectural with a 40 year warranty. Make sure they use a name brand, not
Home Depot, shingle that they are a certified installer for. I forget what we
got but I've got the documentation for it.

It's time to replace our roof, so I'm going to start getting some quotes.

Any tips or advice on the process?  Totally new territory for me.

This is a shingle roof on a two story home, 1994 construction and original
roof which is pretty much right at the end of its life.  I'll probably ask
for quotes for both metal and shingle, but I don't think we have the budget
for metal right now.

I've started by looking at our NextDoor social media site to see what
locals in our neighborhood and other neighborhoods nearby say, and there
are three or four that have a few good reviews.

If you can swing it, metal shingles are the cat's meow. Not a huge amount more
expensive than asphalt, and have a 50 year warranty. Wind proof to 140 mph,
hail proof for the most part, and very very fire resistant.

I spent around $12,000 on my single story a couple years ago. Wonderful roof,
and it will outlast me. 30 year shingles were $9k, so maybe half again. Get
quotes for your area.

Raised ridge metal sheet is about the same cost as 30 year shingles, has a 40
year warranty usually.

Re: [MBZ] OT saw a car that I wanted at lunchtime and it was not even an MB

2018-02-05 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Reminded me of the Mercury Marauder that was out for a short while. It
was parked in the lot here when I left for lunch. I did not go and look
inside to see whether it had decent seats.
I have always liked the last of the older Impala SS too. Not sold as an
Impala otherwise. It was the Caprice if it was not the SS. Early 90's if
memory serves to be correct.

Re: [MBZ] Game with the unmentionable name

2018-02-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I went over to my neighbor's for awhile.  It was raining a bit when i
got there but stood out at the tables and had some good oysters (they
are good this year), then over to the tent to have some Q and steamed
skrimps and other tasty treats.  And beer.  My buddy made a german choc
cake and a lemon cake that were to die for (and I almost did, busting a
gut eating too much of it).  Good music from some local players.  Our
former LovGov and current Congresscritter was there, he came over and
sat by me at out table for awhile, he is quite the schmoozer.  Belen was
not with him. Another friend seems to know him pretty well so she bent
his ear about stuff while I ate and listened and occasionally
interjected erudite comments.  No helicopters flew in this year, it was
kinda windy and rainy so that probably mitigated that foolishness.  I
got into a "discussion" with some rich a*e commercial real estate
guy who was a bit too impressed with himself and his opinions, so that
was fun -- he had NO sense of humor.

I came home and immediately took about an hour nap, and my rabbit ears
weren't working too well in the rain so I only caught some snippets of
The Game which was fine as I find it all fairly boring.

OK, I totally understand.
My garage is about 9 1/2 in 12 so I cannot stand on it. The last time I
shingled it, I used roof brackets and planks. The previous time I was a
lot younger and just used a rope around my waist. However, it is single
storey so no huge drop in any event. I would not do my 2 storey house
either if it was a steep pitch. At my age, I am becoming much more
careful as I understand that I am not as steady on my feet as I once was
and that I would not heal so fast as I once might have.

I am trying to decide how I might make my roof easier and safer to get
on and off of. We have a porch on the back of the house and I think I
can create some form of permanent ladder from it onto the main roof
without creating a monstrosity. My biggest issue with going up on the
roof is getting back on the ladder from the roof. That part makes me
nervous. I also find that the ladder is heavier than it used to be and
assume at some point in time, I will not want to move it around on my
own. Thus, I am looking for some easier way to get up there periodically
just to make sure that all is well or to correct minor issues.

How old are you and what sort of condition are you in?
If you roof is not really steep and if they can load the shingles on
your roof for you, and if you are in reasonably good shape, there is
little reason why you couldn't do it yourself.
Shingling is not brain surgery. It is pretty straight forward. Start
straight and check periodically to ensure you are not going off on a
crooked line (not that it will matter much if you cannot see much of the
roof from the ground) and nail them on. Not hard to do with a hammer but
probably faster and easier with an air nailer.
I did my roof in the summer of 1998 and plan to do it again myself in
the next couple of years. If I wait too long, I may be getting to where
I should not venture onto the roof but for now, I feel able to do it. I

I hand nailed it all the last time but now have a Hitachi roofing
nailer. We used it on my son's new garage and on my new shed and we will

I may put a 2nd layer of sheathing on the roof too. It is 7/16 OSB now

layer of OSB on it should hold the nails better. Last time it was 3 tab
but now those seem to have disappeared so it will be the architectural
shingles next time. The pitch on our roof is such that you really cannot
see if from the ground unless you are a long way back so that is sort of
immaterial.
I am not sure if it applies to sheathing but nails vs screws may be a
code issue. Apparently screws shear easier than nails. My b-in-l built a
deck on the back of his house and used screws to attach joist hangers.
The inspector made him change them out for nails. One can buy screws for
the purpose via Simpson Strong Ties but I don't know if there are better
screws that could be used on roof sheathing.

I'm _NOT_ going to argue if it was worth it - because clearly for
you it was. You "paid" in freedom to gain a neighborhood that you
liked. What any of the rest of us would do doesn't matter as it
is your house and your neighbors. If the price (dollars and
freedom) are worth it for what you have (house and neighborhood)
then good for you!

But I _will_ argue that you clearly did give up freedom.

Do you have less freedom than Don? Yes.

Did you have a choice? Yes

I rest my case.

However, each of us has our own perception of value. And so long
as we are each satisfied that the value exceeds the cost (time,
money, freedom, information) all is good.

In our HOA, one has to get approval from the Architectural Review Board
(ARB) to make changes to the exterior of the house, like installing a metal
roof or changing the color of the paint or the windows, so as to ensure the
neighborhood aesthetics are maintained. I don't know that metal roofs are
prohibited, I have see a couple houses with metal roofs but don't know if
they are replacement roofs. I may see about getting approval for a metal
roof, but the economics would have to add up. Most metal roofs here in
Chucktown are green or red in color, so that color change would be a
"thing" for the ARB to get hung up on.

Re: [MBZ] OT Roofing

2018-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
All right, just stop it you guys. I bought a house in a community with deed
restrictions for a reason.

Any time you want to question the rationale, I can drive you through some
non-deed restricted communities near me built at about the same time as mine.
They’re dumps and the property values reflect this. Not to mention there are
boats, RVs, outbuildings, etc., all over the place, including the front yards.

I gave up no freedom to do this. I agreed up front to rules put in place to
make sure my neighborhood and the properties within it aren’t trashed and are
maintained in a manner that protects their value, keeping my property value up
and stable. I am free to do as I wish with my property within the constraints
that I and every other property owner agreed to when they purchased a property
in my neighborhood.

Had I desired a property that I could do pretty much anything I wished I would
have moved into one of those crappy communities nearby, or in an outlying rural
area to do the same.

My choice.

Craig, there are covenants in place to maintain consistency of the structures,
and one of those requires architectural grade tabbed asphalt shingles for
roofing. That’s why. You see much the same in Florida with communities that
have clay tiles for roofing material.

Let’s move on and stay on topic, please.

Properly installed high quality steel roofing is far superior to
shingles. Since asbestos was taken out of the shingles in the 70s, the
life has been terrible. We put on (30 yr warranty) shingles 20 years
ago and you are lucky to get 20 yrs out of them. Yep, it has been 20
yrs. The "warranty" is worthless. The first 2 got steel roofs. I am
not sure what will happen with the rest.

What I do know is that this time I can't afford to hire #1 son to help,
as he would cost way too much.

Not allowed here. Tear-off is mandatory, I believe. I’ve seen a lot of roofs
being done in the area over the years, and I’ve never seen them roof over an

It adds a substantial amount of weight to the structure, too.

For asphalt:

Most of them want to reshingle over the top of the old. THis is bad.
It may even void the shingle warranty. Every time I did it, (Except the

Homeowner fun just never ends!

It's time to replace our roof, so I'm going to start getting some quotes.

Any tips or advice on the process? Totally new territory for me.

This is a shingle roof on a two story home, 1994 construction and original
roof which is pretty much right at the end of its life. I'll probably ask
for quotes for both metal and shingle, but I don't think we have the
budget

for metal right now.

I've started by looking at our NextDoor social media site to see what
locals in our neighborhood and other neighborhoods nearby say, and there
are three or four that have a few good reviews.

If the Rods don't get 'em, then Regina will?

Sorry Kaleb, couldn't resist

Don - I think the consensus is that the head gasket is the weak point that
leads to a bent rod at #1 cylinder and death of the engine. I think it
would be a low risk option to buy one, replace the head gasket if not
already done, and have the cylinder walls and piston heights checked to
make sure there is not already a bent rod. However, the expense and time
involved may not be worth it? Another option would be to drop-in an OM606
turbo engine, re-use original IP, and have more power and a more dependable
engine.

For goodness sakes, don’t tell the wife. She lives for putting on social stuff
and typically overdoes it to the point of exhaustion. It bugs me to no end, as
I don’t have a problem with her doing this but she’s always doing too much and
getting wiped out as a result. I chided her over last night’s preparations,
which, of course, she was complaining about overdoing it this morning while
we’re on the way to the hospital for her surgery.

If she could be a caterer and make a decent living I’m sure she would.
However, she doesn’t have the physical stamina to do it. I have to be the ‘bad
guy” on a regular basis and get her to throttle back, despite her always coming
back after the fact and validating my concerns. Grr.

G-d forbid if we ever had a “Q” here she would kill herself. But we’d have
loads of great food….

Re: [MBZ] OT Roofing

2018-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We’ve got a new roof in our future as well, probably in the next 2-3 years.
House was built in 1998 and it’s the original.

Take some time and check into your current code requirements. As you might
expect, this is super critical down here with hurricanes, and may play into
your situation as well. Nailing schedules are the biggie. The number of nails
per foot/shingle are the critical numbers. Clip spacing on the panels has
increased as well. Dade County (Miami) hurricane codes are considered the most
stringent in the state and are pretty much what all municipalities abide by.

I’m thinking of getting new decking to increase the strength of the roof. Not
sure if this is super important, but it’s one of those “while you’re there why
not do it?” sort of things. I know our current decking is OSB, which is pretty
common these days, but wondering if using plywood would increase the strength.
With the consideration that we might install roof mounted solar panels in the
future this might be important. I have also wondered about screws versus
nails, too, but I”m not sure that’s commonly done.

Keep us posted as to your findings, as I’m definitely interested.

It is nice. Needs a Martha treatment. But, with these the important question
is whether the rods have been addressed OR it has had a replacement engine
right? I thought the conventional wisdom was these will ALL bend the rods

[MBZ] OT Roofing

Homeowner fun just never ends!

It's time to replace our roof, so I'm going to start getting some quotes.

Any tips or advice on the process? Totally new territory for me.

This is a shingle roof on a two story home, 1994 construction and original
roof which is pretty much right at the end of its life. I'll probably ask
for quotes for both metal and shingle, but I don't think we have the budget
for metal right now.

I've started by looking at our NextDoor social media site to see what
locals in our neighborhood and other neighborhoods nearby say, and there
are three or four that have a few good reviews.

Re: [MBZ] 1993 400E Stuff

2018-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Vehicle Master Inquiry

Any time an MB touches a dealer, no matter how minor, even if no work is
performed, it’s recorded. The dealers use the VMI to “see” the history of the
car as it relates to Mercedes. My 1998 W210 wagon had an eight page VMI. The
text on these is really small, like maybe 10 point font, so there’s a lot of
information on eight pages. That means that the car “saw” a dealer a LOT.

If you go to a dealer and ask to see a VMI it’s likely you’ll get a blank stare
or a refusal, even if it’s your car, as VMIs are internal MB documents. My
dealer is pretty cool about them and if you’re the owner will share them with
you. There’s nothing secret on them, in fact, a great deal of the entries
don’t even have explanations or very few details, as everything is coded to
operation numbers. Where there are text entries it does give you some insight
into the operation that was performed. Most importantly for MB, warranty work
is listed in the VMI in detail.

the only color left in MB inventory is blue. Nice.

Shipper should be there tomorrow we’re hoping, so it should be here by the end
of the week at the latest, maybe a day after they pick it up.

"Gives it another 50 hp" according to the BW moron who had the 250hp 240D

Probably some genius thought that would be easier to maintain than the
oil bath air cleaner. (and thought it would add HP)

What's up with that air cleaner just hanging there, no can or intake tube?
That can't be right.

Re: [MBZ] Monday....

2018-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have a dash cam for this car, but I’m waiting to install it when I have the
headliner out so I can make the installation nice and clean. Oh, well.

A nice replacement bumper from another wagon in the same color is $400. The
filing fees and time to pursue is more than that.

I got a chance to go look at it in the daylight. No paint/metal damage, just
the leading edge of the bumper at the rear of the wheel well is broken off. At
least it is now, as I snapped it off the rest of the way as it was hanging on
by just a little piece of the plastic. I didn’t want to lose my MB mud flap
that was attached.

I already sent quote requests in to a couple of places on Car-Parts for bumpers
they have listed, so I expect to have one on the way possibly today or tomorrow.

Dash cams, front and rear, and you'd have a license plate and maybe a clear
pic of the driver's face. Hypothetically file a police report and get a
small claims court ruling, and at least you'd have a (small) trap laid for
them.

[MBZ] Monday....

2018-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wife has surgery this morning, so we’re on our way to the hospital when an
older Lexus bumps into me in the right rear as we’re going around a turn on a
surface street. I’m ahead of them and there are no side streets for about 1/4
mile, so I keep going and turn off on the first side street. I’m expecting
them to follow me onto the side street as they’re behind me. I wait, see lots
of traffic go by, but no Lexus. It’s clear that the Lexus has passed us and
moved on.

We were noticing that this Lexus had the reverse lights on all the time when
they were ahead of us at a traffic light before we got bumped, so the
assumption is that it was a beater without insurance.

I’m pretty wired after the hit, as you might expect. We decide to keep going
after it’s clear the Lexus has disappeared.

It’s still dark outside, but from what I could see when we got to the hospital
the only damage is to the bumper below the metal on the right rear. Once it
gets light and the wife is in the OR I’m going to walk back out to the parking
lot and have a look in the daylight.

Car-Parts.com has bumpers fairly close to me in good
condition in my color for $400 and less. Looks like I’ll need one…
