Turns out it's a Japanese fellow with a very thick accent. I called him
this morning and arranged to meet him at the address he gave sometime
between 1630 and 1700.

I arrived there at 1650 and rang the doorbell. No response. I walked out
front and double-checked the address and went back and rang it again.
Still no response.

I called the fellow back and as I was talking with him, the door opened.
The fellow behind the door asked what I wanted. I said I wanted to talk
with Mike. He said he didn't live there and gave me another address. The
fellow on the phone seemed to be saying he would come over.

I called him back after I got back in the BRV. He said the house was his
son's and that he was coming over. He finally arrived about 1720 and went
to the side of the garage by the front door where an external opener key
pad was mounted and opened the garage door. The car indeed was inside.

The car is very beautiful. The interior was excellent.

The tires were about half-inflated from having sat so long. I opened the
hood and figured out how to release the two catches on the sides of the
grille. The engine was clean, though it was overfilled with engine oil --
it was about as much above the full mark as the full mark is above the
low mark.

It has the vacuum-style cruise actuator.

It also has a red wire coming out of the firewall with the rest of the
wire bundles and going frontward about a foot with the end stripped.

The glow plug relay green wire has some insulation removed and some
solder on the uninsulated part. I know about purple wire mods for
after-glow, but nothing with the green wire.

Inside, I noticed the headlights had been left on -- the battery is
probably junk for having sat so long with such a load.

The fellow went on and on about how you couldn't get cars like that any
more, that the sheet metal was solid and there was no plastic. He kicked
both bumpers and pointed out how solid they were. There were more things
like that. He said he used to have a restaurant in Taos. He said he had
the engine rebuilt by a German fellow in Taos. He remembered Les; I
remembered Blumner.

Looking in the glove box, I noticed several receipts. One, signed by a
Native American by the name of Two Feathers, had a date of
2000. There was a receipt from Les Blumner dated 2004 which mentioned
payment towards a replacement engine. Both receipt showed the same
mileage, which was what the odometer was displaying.

I asked the fellow if the odometer worked. He said it did. I asked him if
he were telling me the truth. He seemed somewhat offended and said he
told me the truth as he knew it, but he didn't know anything about the
stuff under the hood.

He was talking about driving it around the neighborhood, which I wanted
to do. He was finally understandable to be saying he didn't know if it
could be driven around the neighborhood.

He said he didn't have to sell it because he had four cars, but wanted to
have it not sitting in the garage.

He seemed to want me to buy a new battery and then take it home to "spend
a thousand dollars and then you will have a car you can keep forever."

2018-07-12 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Does that vehicle come with it's own life insurance policy, and is the new
owner given a burial plot as part of the purchase price?

Flying, which seems so simple, is not.

Know that feeling you get in rush hour, surrounded by drivers who should
not be driving? Multiply that by an exponential factor when you add 3
dimensional vectors of flight. Just buried a friend last week, an
experienced pilot, who died from an accelerated stall in a glider, at 400
ft altitude. Took the first res ponders 3 hrs to "un-bury" him along with
the wreckage. I don't see a zero flight time buyer surviving what such a
proposed aircraft could present in flight challenges..

My 0.01 cents worth...

Re: [MBZ] 1986 300E Ignition Resistor?

2018-07-12 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Cuts out and backfires could easily be an over-rich condition, too. Or bad
plug wires. Or a leaking airflow sensor to throttle body leak.

Your symptoms tell me that the system cannot manage the fuel mixture when it
comes out of cold running open loop mode. When it goes into feedback loop
mode, the mixture goes way over rich or way over lean and the engine dies.

I've fished around on these systems for a long time (since 1980), they have to
be vacuum leak free, the charcoal cartridge for the vapor recovery system has
to be in good shape, the fuel pumps have to be right with a good fuel filter,
and the airflow meter must be clean and moving properly. You must also have a
good fuel distributor plunger seal (or fuel drips into the intake) and good
injectors.

Great system when it works, but it can take a while to get it right when it
acts up.

I would do the following:

Check for intact fuel injector seals, both on the injector and on the plastic
insert they sit in.

Check for leaking or split idle control valve hoses.

Check for leaks on the boot between the fuel distributor/air meter and the
throttle body, they shrink and crack with age.

Verify a clear exhaust.

Check the oxygen sensor (a prime suspect, actually, since it acts like it's
going out of control in closed loop mode).

Check the connector for the oxygen sensor under the right front carpet -- a
spilled soda or a window left open can cause liquid to collect on the plug and
corrode it. It's under the secondary padding.

Check fuel pressures -- if the mechanic doesn't know what you are talking
about, you need a different mechanic, he's just fishing in the dark. Base
pressure, upper and lower chamber pressures, differential drop across the fuel
distributor.

Check the electrohydraulic regulator on the rear of the fuel distributor, they
leak when they are bad. Will also not control differential pressure properly.
  Make sure it's plugged in

Mine stalled and backfired while trying to start it when I had a bad fuel pump
-- on the TE they are in series so one bad makes it refuse to run.. Sedans are
in parallel.

Check for a clogged or smashed fuel line -- will show up as low fuel pressure.

Make sure the charcoal canister vent is not clogged -- it's the right size for
a mud dauber to build a nest in. Will result in serious suction on the tank as
there will be no air vent. Also verify that the canister is not fuel soaked,
as it is cleared when the engine warms up. Sucking liquid gasoline down the
intake from a flooded canister will stall it.

Is your mechanic familiar with KE-Jet injection? It's mechanical, not
electronic except for mixture control feedback. A failing electro-hydraulic
regulator could do the same thing by leaking when warm.

A sticking idle control valve will cause stalling when coasting to a stop.

Lots of possibilities.

Re: [MBZ] OT - noise cancellation

2018-07-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
So this is a true story. Back in 1968 when I was 14 I was visiting my aunt and
uncle. My uncle had quite a collection of Playboys stashed in a closet. While
they were at work I amused (!!) myself “reading” the magazines. I was actually
reading something about hi-go stereo headphones, which I guess were kinda new
at that time, and the article had something in it about how well they would
block out the noise so you could hear the music.

Somehow or other this stimulated some thinking about noise and headphones and
such, and I reasoned that since sound is waves, there must be some way to make
anti-waves, thereby canceling the sound wave to make quiet. I had no idea how
to go this, maybe some kind of circuit and a microphone that could listen the
make the anti-wave in a headphone. I pondered this for some time.

My uncle was somewhat smart about stuff so when he got home I proposed this
idea. He thought it was pretty good but had no idea either. My dad was an
electronics engineer, my uncle (dad’s brother) told me I should talk to him
about it. So a few days later I got home and said something about it, he
thought it was interesting but didn’t have a lot more to say about it.

Interjection: my dad had proposed at some point along about then an idea to
build a handheld electronic calculator, and had sketched out the idea with some
colleagues but it never went anywhere, technical issues or something. Some few
years later a coupla those guys ended up at Bowmar, a small electronics outfit
in town, and from there came the Bowmar Brain which was essentially this
device.

I have thought about this noise canceling idea over the years, even mentioned
it to a few people along the way, nothing ever came of it from me, now these
things are ubiquitous. Oh well...

As far as this specific car it looks like it's in pretty good

It's intriguing all right, but I'm reserving judgement since it could be a
hoax. I base that on the near vertical flight. It would be interesting to know
the weight of the plane and the power of the eight engines. Of course he could
have "made a run for it" so that inertia was added to the vertical flight which
might not have been that far vertically. We'll see.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting 1995 E300D

2018-07-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My commute is ~120 miles round trip. Fortunately I get to work from home a
lot. I've been in the office one day in the last month and don't have to be in
again until the week after next.
Back in 2005-2007 when I was commuting all the time I piled the miles onto my
'85 190D. I think I drove that car 90,000 miles in that time frame.

175 kmi in 6 years is 29.17 kmi / year, which is 2,431 miles per month.

If you consider 21 driving days per month, being the working days,
without the previous rounding that's 115.74 miles per day.

I routinely drove 125 miles per day during the summer of 2015 when we
lived south-southeast of Santa Fe and I drove to Albuquerque to attend
truck driving school.

So it's not impossible, only difficult.

Awesome!!  I have converted my wife into a dizzel fan and she wants to
fix our 91 300 or find another.  After driving the 300D for years her
driving style has morphed into a "all the time, foot on the floor,
driving" and now when she's driving our 06 Ferd Explorer it's the same
way - foot on the floor till the speed limit is reached.  She has come
around.  ;-)

I bought mine about 4 or 5 years ago at 100k miles, It now has 215K miles
and I have noticed very little, if any, decay in the time I've owned this
car. It has more torque ( and acceleration) than V-8 cars I've previously
driven. And that is while getting 35 mpg in town and up to 40 mpg on
highway.

The pictures of the car you are considering show that car was particularly
well cared for because it has all the covers and shields around the engine
compartment. I had a hard time finding one that still had all that stuff.
I don't know how functionally important those things are, but they indicate
to me a level of care and attention to detail someone was giving to its
maintenance.

I've had no problems with the SBC (brake by wire). And I think I saw
somewhere that prices for after market and/or dealer parts for SBC has come
down a lot since warranties expired. So I'm not too worried about any
eventual repairs SBC may need.

I would definitely look that car over. I would want more money than that
to sell mine.

2018-07-12 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Thanks Clay,

I agree completely about the build quality going downhill.  And your
other comments are spot on as well.  I bought a 06 E350 that was great
when we bought it with 153K mi and within a month the CEL was on and it
refused to start.  My indy wanted 1300 to R&R the fuel pump and I refuse
to pay that with the CEL still an issue.  So I have a large paper weight
in my driveway.  But the MBUSA 15 yr warranty might get it back on the
road - we'll see if they cover the pump.\

re the pre W140 cars - that's the reason I am not giving up on my 91
300D.  If I can find a used bearing hub I can fix the R whl bearing
problem pretty easily.  But we'll see...

It took me a bit to figure out you were asking after newer cars

I would not consider any new benz with more than 50k. The build quality is
just not available any more. The replacement parts are too complex and
expensive to bother keeping them on the road when they break down. The systems
are more than the value of the vehicle when it begins a cascade failure. I
would say much the same about the 220D, but I got that for under $125, so
anything I did was going to increase that cars value. Fixing the W220 was
money down the crapper.

Ask me about a car older than a W140, and I would say that there are more miles
in that car and probably worth every dollar you put toward it. Not a one of my
current cars has under 200k. And came to me with those miles.

When I was searching for a new (used) MB diesel I tended to drop those with

won't consider? And why?

Now I'm thinking >200K mi might have been worth looking at especially since we
both are retired now and driving much less. After all, our 91 300D has 275K and
except for that rust issue is still in great shape.

As far as this specific car it looks like it's in pretty good condition, lots
of photos to look at - just based on that I'd put it in my definitely look at
box. BTW, I found diesel MB's usually came at an approx $3000 to $5000
premium. At least that's the way the pricing was in our area.

Anything worth noting about these? Car has been for sale for awhile (note the
snow) so I figure he'd be ready to deal.I don't especially like an auto
transmission but my Jetta needs replacing...
