Take all the letters in the word "Airplane" and try to spell "Cheap" with
them you can't.

Take a look at the cases he builds for the amps!  Outstanding work!

Yes it is. As long as it’s above about 70F when you put it on you should be OK.
Do it in the summer and you’re good for sure. It’s like really, really thick
sticky tar paper.

And don’t waste your money on DynaMat - buy the cheaper Noico brand stuff. It’s
identical from what I can tell working with both side by side, and it’s a heck
of a lot cheaper.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Calrod heater element

2019-03-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The guy I used to work for would know all that.  He seemed to be on a
first name basis with the engineers at both companies.  He was 80 at the
time, and ran like he was 20 or 25, kinda like Dax on startrek.  He'd
get a call at 3 am from a ship on the other side of the world having
trouble lighting their boilers.  We built control panels put in heaters
and all sorts of crazy stuff.  When nobody in the world would take on a
project, Harry would. Unfortunately he's moved on.   Harry was one of
the most memorable characters I've met.   He was on Ford Island at 8 am
Sunday Dec 7, 1941.   He told me that he and a couple other guys (in the
Army) invented palletizing supplies and forklifts on Ford Island in the
early 40s to expedite shipments to the islands.   I have no reason to
doubt him.  His word was always good.

Anyhow, those dimensions you mention are a good start.  If they need
more, they will tell you.

I think you’re looking at $32 worth of the stuff in the back of that car. it’s
not expensive unless you buy the DynaMat stuff, which is admittedly the best
but way overblown as far as reputation.

If you ever have to do the headliner in your SL, you definitely want to lay up
some of this stuff in there before you put the new headliner in. Makes the
inside of the car quiet as a library.

[MBZ] I want to loose my lug bolts

2019-03-23 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I mixed up some magic elixer acetone+ATF to use to try to get the lug
bolts off the SL600 wheel that is stuck on.  I put a big piece of duct
tape over the bolt hole on the wheel and then filled it up with the
elixer.  Will let it soak as long as it will sit there, not sure if it
is going to work its way into the stuck part but will see.

[MBZ] When you assume...

2019-03-23 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

You know how that ends...

So today is a gorgeous warm day so I decide to replace the engine mounts
on the $500E300.  I had to get a new upper radiator hose as it was
worn/cut through, I put that on the other day.  I observed that the
engine was tilting severely and the top pulley and belt had worn the
hose through.  So I ordered new mounts, not cheap. So I get the car
jacked up and get the engine raised up, take off the left mount and
notice there is no bottom bolt holding it in. WTF?  Both mounts also
look almost new, so nothing wrong with them.  I'm guessing the monkey
who replaced them either forgot the bolt or did not get it tight enough.

So I go to the hardware store and get a bolt that appears it will fit,
an M7 about 40mm.  Spins in there fairly tightly.  I come back and put
the old mount back on, the bottom bolt just spins in the hole.  ??? so I
take it off again (it is an easy job with the car up and the engine
jacked up a bit) and see the bolt is just spinning in the hole and not
even tight in there.  hmmm, the threads don't look stripped, and it fit
tight at the HW store.  So anyway I go back up there (close by) and find
that an M8 now fits.  ???  I guess it was just goobered up or something,
but the M7 sure seemed to fit.  So anyway I got it back together easy
enough, the engine is sedate now, all is good.

I guess I will send the new mounts back to the vendor, RMEuropean, they
were the only one that had a cheaper Febi for the front mount, the other
places only had an actual MB part for the front and it was really
expensive.  So I guess that will cost me some shipping but tuition in
the school of life...

Re: [MBZ] Pinion Nut Socket

2019-03-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
May I borrow it when the time comes to do my rear axle rebuild? I’m not
planning on doing this for probably a month or so. I’ve got to take a look and
see if it still has the slotted nut, as they stopped selling them for
replacement a while ago. If you order one now you get the more modern 12 point
nut instead.

Thank you,

-D
