Have a look at this youtube tutorial on doing cheap plastic welding.. all
home tooled. Save the parts broken out of your bumper and weld them back
in...
I've used a soldering iron, cheap lowest cost Harbor Freight iron, to weld
a lot of broken plastic. With just a bit of practice, you'll get pretty
good at it.
I use zip ties as filler rod, since they come in a selection of colors, and
are thermo molded plastic, they are happy to be re-melted into what ever
I'm fixing.

That's odd ... you usually see an inoperative A/C, not an inoperative
heater.

I presume this job is roughly the same difficulty as Wilton and Larry's
evapectomies.

So what would be a reasonable price? From what I have seen, there are not
many of these for sale.

[MBZ] The Details

2019-06-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So in my desire to have everything in order on the ML500 before I send it off
to long term storage, I decide I’m going to get the front ash tray working (it
sticks closed) and replace the light bulb in it, too. Little did I know….

So I fight with the ashtray for a good 30 minutes. The insert comes out, but
the “push to release” function for the ashtray just doesn’t work. I get the
front cover off of it and start poking around. Within the area under and around
the ashtray, aided with some long hemostats and Mercedes cluster hooks, I
removed:

16 toothpicks
3 small packets of salt
2 business cards
Coins

Now understand that this was just digging around the ashtray from above and
below it while it’s in place. Still no joy.

I hose it down with brake cleaner. No improvement.

Finally, I decide that it’s got to come out. What does that entail?

Removal of the center console. Yup. In an ML, if you want to get to the front
ashtray to change the bulb or remove the ashtray itself the center console
comes out. Now while this does sound like a major undertaking, it’s really not
too bad. You can do it the first time in about 10 minutes, maybe less.

So out comes the console. I remove ashtray and take it to my outdoor kitchen,
where I hose it down liberally with degreaser and then rinse it off. Pop it in
the outdoor oven for about 30 minutes at 170F to dry it out. Oh, yeah - more
detritus. A VISA debit card for the IU Hoosiers, expired in 2012.

So out of the oven it comes. Then I spend a good 20 minutes trying to get to
the bulb in the cigarette lighter, which you can’t get to. Really, you can’t.
There are a number of people who have done it online on YouTube, but they run
very, very close to destroying the ashtray doing so. I finally get it apart and
get a new bulb in the socket. Button everything up, it’s working great with the
“touch and release” function.

Put everything back together, all ready to go, and - the bulb doesn’t work.
Grrr. But hey, it’s not a total loss, as now the ashtray works like it should.

So I back the car out, turn it around to move it into place in front of the
garage where the finnie parks, and crack!

I bumped the corner of the ML into the corner of the garage. A hole the size of
a softball in the right rear corner of the rear bumper. Dang thing shattered
like a piece of glass.

Oh, well. I remind myself that it’s a $1400 beater. Still sucks.

All that for a lousy light bulb.

Yup, I grew turnips one year. I was unsure what the deer would do with them. I
found that the deer would both browse the tops and pull the whole turnip out of
the ground to eat the root. That was one of my more successful experiments and
I intend to try that again in the next year or two. For now I plant just one
plot to experiment, at some point once I get my planting method down a little
better I'll probably add another. We're doing about 1/2 acre right now.
I've gotten to the point where I need to get a real seeder and I need to start
adding way more fertilizer. Probably next spring I'll get one of those tow
behind spreaders. At the same time I'll probably expand the plot I've been
planting to a full acre.

Security in the office has gotten to the point where I can't take anything
home anymore which is a shame.
I do have an XW8600 at home that got replaced with a Mac Pro. I haven't turned
it on for months, I probably should get it moved out and get a smaller desk,
it'd make space in our living room.
Shipping will be spendy, XW8600 is big and heavy.

Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun is Baaaack!

2019-06-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks!

I was really struggling with what to do radio-wise. Finding a working Becker or
other brand that is period correct is getting to be pretty expensive these
days. Luckily, I found this one for cheap from a BW forum member who had listed
it for sale some months ago with no takers. No faceplate, which was an issue,
so I camped out on eBay and lucked into someone selling the correct faceplate
for $30. To give you an idea, they normally sell from Becker for around $150 or
more, and that doesn’t include the hardware.

I had a bag of hardware from the original Blaupunkt that was in the car, so
again, I lucked out in that regard. Only thing I had to pop for was one chrome
shaft nut from Becker - $25.

The real kicker was when I first set it up and got nothing out of it. Darn!!
And then I realized it was a tube radio and had to warm up…2-3 minutes powered
up and it was making noise. Whew!
