I love to look up where I want to go on maps either
on-line or on paper. Then I put my destination into the
GPS, go my way and watch it flail around trying to tell
me which way I should be going and continually
recalculating as it tries to correct my wrong turns.
Lots of fun and keeps me entertained while driving.

The timing on this could not have been better. Earlier this week Rand
McNally announced
https://www.truckinginfo.com/334268/rand-mcnally-updates-motor-carriers-road-atlas-1
that the 2020 edition of its legendary Motor Carriers' Road Atlas was
available. A couple of days later, I came across an opinion piece in
the Washington Post postulating that driving with GPS might be ruining
our brains. Back when I was driving for a living, GPS wasn't even a
twinkle in Rand McNally's eye — or anyone else's for that matter.

It has become the most natural thing to do: get in the car, type a
destination into a smartphone, and let an algorithm using GPS data
show the way. Personal GPS-equipped devices entered the mass market in
only the past 15 or so years, but hundreds of millions of people now
rarely travel without them. These gadgets are extremely powerful,
allowing people to know their location at all times, to explore
unknown places and to avoid getting lost.

But they also affect perception and judgment. When people are told
which way to turn, it relieves them of the need to create their own
routes and remember them. They pay less attention to their
surroundings. And neuroscientists can now see that brain behavior
changes when people rely on turn-by-turn directions.

Wayfinding: The Science and Mystery of How Humans Navigate the World

In this compelling narrative, O'Connor seeks out neuroscientists,
anthropologists and master navigators to understand how navigation
ultimately gave us our humanity. Biologists have been trying to solve
the mystery of how organisms have the ability to migrate and orient
with such precision―especially since our own adventurous ancestors
spread across the world without maps or instruments. O'Connor goes to
the Arctic, the Australian bush and the South Pacific to talk to
masters of their environment who seek to preserve their traditions at
a time when anyone can use a GPS to navigate.

O’Connor explores the neurological basis of spatial orientation within
the hippocampus. Without it, people inhabit a dream state, becoming
amnesiacs incapable of finding their way, recalling the past, or
imagining the future. Studies have shown that the more we exercise our
cognitive mapping skills, the greater the grey matter and health of
our hippocampus. O'Connor talks to scientists studying how atrophy in
the hippocampus is associated with afflictions such as impaired
memory, dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, depression and PTSD. Wayfinding
is a captivating book that charts how our species' profound capacity
for exploration, memory and storytelling results in topophilia, the
love of place.

"O'Connor talked to just the right people in just the right places,
and her narrative is a marvel of storytelling on its own merits,
erudite but lightly worn. There are many reasons why people should
make efforts to improve their geographical literacy, and O'Connor hits
on many in this excellent book―devouring it makes for a good start."

Most often, I think, it is because they are using a consumer GPS, though
it is also due flaws in the software and road data of a trucking GPS.

When we drove our Peterbilt 386 to Dallas, I programmed our Rand McNally
trucking GPS with a vehicle height of 13' 6". It routed me under a bridge
which had 13' 6" of clearance. Fortunately, our tractor was less than
13' 6" and had no problem going under the bridge. In the future I will
program our vehicle height as 13' 8" or 13' 10".

Haha!  Manfred, I like your sense of humor!

Sometimes I will do that for entertainment too.   The funniest one was
when I was riding with my daughter, and she was using gps to find some
house to put a for sale sign up.  We knew it was up off of MS 15, which
was built after katrina.   As soon as we turn off I 10, onto hwy 15, the
gps screen shows nothing but timber, and the aussie boy voice keeps
saying to "turn around immediately, you have left the road!"  He kept
getting more strident.    It was quite funny!

I rarely use the thing and often find it does  not know its way, but
they are getting better.

Re: [MBZ] Evapectomy

2019-06-30 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
There are a few mistakes in the service manual procedures that slowed me
down a bit.

The glove box must be removed to disconnect the right front speaker, the
small suction motor for the interior temp. sensor, and the light for the
vent control. Removing the glove box (or the airbag on later models) is
not even discussed.

Toward the end of the heater box take-apart, second to last step (or there
abouts) says remove some fasteners and then pull off top piece to expose
the evap, but the next step says to remove more fasteners, that second step
needs to be completed to pull off the top piece.

In order to get at the expansion valve, the cowling ductwork at the bottom
of the windscreen needs to be removed, that step is also omitted.

I used a bunch of small ziploc bags, labeled with each assembly, to hold
all the fasteners for those assemblies, that kept all the assorted nuts and
screws in order.

The most troublesome connectors were little plastic pins with a
four-cornered push-snap connection, usually very awkwardly placed, that
hold the various vacuum pod arms to the levers they move. I'm sure there
is some special tool that makes removal easy, but I don't have it.

I used plumber's putty to substitute the factory seal between the heater
box and the body (hole in the firewall), which was very similar (still
somewhat malleable after 32 years).

I do the ziploc bag thing whenever I take anything that’s remotely complex
apart, and I take pictures as I go along.

For example, when I did the firewall material on the finnie yesterday, the
“before” pictures helped me to identify where the holes would be for the wiring
harness clamps, as they weren’t punched in the material.

[MBZ] OT so my friend bought a car yesterday

2019-06-30 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I had taken her around to look at these little s*boxes, Versas and Foci
and whatnot.  We were at this lot looking at a Versa, and the guy also
had a Subaru Forester for not a lot more money, it was really nice.  She
drove it and of course compared to the little s*boxes she fell in love
with it.  It was a bit higher than what she wanted to spend so we left
it as we would come back. Yesterday morning we went to look at another
Forester or two at this guy's lot who sells only Subarus.  He had a
couple but they were in same price range as the one we had looked at
Friday but not as nice and he wouldn't haggle as he was moving those
things right out.

She called the other guy, we were going back to get the one we saw on
Friday, but someone had just come to buy it.  Bah.  So she starts
looking on her phone, finds one in Savannah in the same price range,
looks OK in the pics.  So we head to Savannah, about 2hr away.  (Benz
content:  I drove the $500E300, it never missed a beat, but the AC is
still wonky and sometimes works great then decides not to.  I think
there might be some sensor on the compressor speed or something as a
change in speed or rpm seems to kick the cooling off, will have to look
into that again)

We get to the lot, the guy was gonna meet us but his wife had some
crisis so he took off.  Vehicle was not as nice and similar price, and
this kinda orange color which she didn't like.  So she looks again and
finds another one listed about a mile away at another little lot.  So we
go there, the car was a lot cheaper but had lots more miles, was OK
though but the miles put her off.  We looked around, they had this
Nissan Rogue in decent condition, 150k miles, $5200 which was less than
the Subie.  So we drove that, it was pretty nice, she decided she liked
it, so we bought it.  I got the guy to knock off $200, we were out of
there.  So she got a vehicle, she likes it, seems decent, will need
tires which she is getting this week.  But saved her about $2k over the
other ones we were looking at so that made her feel pretty good. Some
money for tires and whatever other things it might need in the near
term, and if anything goes bad.

I knew nothing about these vehicles, but seems OK, AWD, is the higher
end model with some extra options, was very clean, carfax showed it had
been dealer maintained most always.  This guy bought his cars from
dealers as trade-ins, never at auction, this one came from where it had
been serviced, the owner had traded it in on a new one.  So that is a
bit comforting, but who knows...
