In the first 124, I tried to clean the squirters with anything and
everything.   No squirty!   I bought a couple new uns from Q, and alles
ist squirty, and still good some 10-12 years later.   I think you are
hosed on this, unless you happen to find some good ones at bob's your
knacker.

[MBZ] 210 windshield squirter puzzlements et al. 210 stuff

2020-03-01 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
The squirters on the $600E320 don’t. I took one apart some time ago to try to
clean it. Nothing I tried — reaming, soaking, high pressure air — got it to
pass squirter fluid. Totally clogged or blocked or something.

I pulled 4 at the knacker Some time ago and tried a couple this afternoon. The
pump is pushing fluid but none of these things will pass it. I can’t figure it
out. They all seem to be blocked, can’t blow anything through them.

I got a fog light put on (thanks Max) from one that had disappeared and found
the fuse was blown, so now I have aux lights. Had to take apart the connector
to get the wires connected.

I bought a new crank sensor to see if I can cure the occasional no-start
annoyance. Turns out there are 2 variants depending on engine build sequence. I
ordered the wrong one so have to get the proper one. Wasn’t too hard to get at.

Tried to chase down a P0410 secondary air injection fault code. This puts air
into the exhaust on cold start and seems to improve cold idle. Jiggled all the
relays and fuses and various hoses I could reach. Started the car, it seems to
start and idle better. No code. Didn’t drive it do not sure if it will show an
issue again. In any case it’s not a fatal error, maybe, unless it’s what’s
causing the occasional no-start.

The little thing up by the roof lights that sucks in air is making noise. It’s
annoying as hell, a giant sucking sound. I managed to get it out and take the
thing apart. It has a little fan and motor about a cm diameter that sits on a
spring suspension(!!!) to suck air past a temp sensor on a little circuit
board. I cleaned it a bit, wasn’t sprayed some light lubricant on it but it is
still noisy, not sure why. A new one is like $75! Wow.

I fooled with the new $500E300 a bit to try to see if jiggling various bits
could get it to light off. Cranks fine but no joy. I need to pull the K40
relay off the wrecked car and see if that might get it to light off. Maybe the
other relays and boards too. There appears to be some linkage with the fuel
pump according to what I’ve read about the one code it is throwing. The mech I
bought it from had his knowledge exceeded after replacing the starter. He left
it not quite back together so I’ll have to check all that out.

[MBZ] C. V. 19 in silly valley

2020-03-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
All: This is a compilation of messages from a friend of mine, a nuclear
physicist,Associate Lab Director, Chief Research Officer and Professor
at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory

Stanford University.

As many have said, no need to panic. But like any flu season, minimizing
contact minimizes probability of transfer. Message #1 deals with
transmission and precautions. #2 and #3 are just personal accounts of
the goings on in the metro area where Stanford is.

Information:

Corona virus:
Dear Family and Friends, as some of you may recall, when I was a
professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was
one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on
coronaviruses (the 1970s). I was the first to demonstrate the number of
genes the virus contained. Since then, I have kept up with the
coronavirus field and its multiple clinical transfers into the human
population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different animal sources.

The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable,
due to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to
be widespread by mid to late March and April.

Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take.
These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza
seasons, except for the mask and gloves.:

1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.

2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons,
etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable
glove.

3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle
with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door.
Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.

4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available,
including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.

5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than
60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY
activity that involves locations where other people have been.

6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's
entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other
contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.

7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard.
Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will
contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!

What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:

1) Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping,
using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in
contact with contaminated areas.

Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing.
This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where
these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average -
everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated
and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be
infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed
upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects
your lungs). The only way for the virus to infect you is through your
nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into
your nose or mouth.

2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent
you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth
90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect
you - it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a
direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep
you from touching your nose or mouth.

3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the
appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanit

[MBZ] Corona South Korea

2020-03-01 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

The leader of a religious sect in South Korea could face a homicide
investigation over some of the country's coronavirus deaths.

The city government of the capital Seoul has asked prosecutors to charge Lee
Man-hee, the founder of the Shincheonji Church, and 11 others.

They are accused of hiding the names of some members as officials tried to
track patients before the virus spread.

South Korea is battling the worst coronavirus outbreak outside China.

The country has reported 3,730 cases and 21 deaths so far. More than half of
all infections involve members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a fringe
Christian group.

Authorities say Shincheonji members infected one another in the southern city
of Daegu last month, before fanning out around the country.

Corolla or a Camry. Any year Camry with the four banger. 2003 or newer Corolla.
A '96 or '97 Corolla would be fine. The 1999-2002 Corolla have oil ring issues,
and if the oil level is not checked often, the engine is toast. Honda
automatics suck. Domestic cars, Ford Crown Vic and Mercury Marquis are
reliable. They had issues with the intake coolant leak on certain years. A GM

An old man or old lady owned Camry or Crown Vic would be my first choice.

[MBZ] Covid 19 update

2020-03-01 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
March 1, 2020 at 1:09 p.m. EST

The novel coronavirus has probably been spreading undetected for about six
weeks

in Washington state, where the first U.S. death was reported this weekend.
A genetic analysis of the virus from a newly diagnosed patient in Snohomish
County closely matched that of a specimen from the first known coronavirus
patient in the United States, who traveled from China in January.

The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that these cases are linked through
community transmission, researchers say, and that this has been going on
for weeks, with hundreds of infections likely.

The United States, Australia and Thailand each reported their first
coronavirus-related deaths over the weekend, all in the span of about 12
hours. Covid-19 has killed patients on four continents, with the global
death toll climbing toward 3,000.

Philip, I had a slave cylinder fail on a 190D, and there was no visible leak. I
think just like a brake master cylinder, one failure mode is bad cup seal, so
leak is internal.

Refill the system, check for leaks, if none the check for pressure at the slave
cylinder when the pedal is pushed. Note that the air needs to be bled before
pressure check. Connect a hose between right front wheel caliper bleeder and
clutch bleeder, open both, pump brake pedal until no more bubbles in reservoir.
Close bleeders, check clutch pedal.

When I had the clutch master cylinder fail, the first symptom was that I needed
to pump the pedal to get clutch release.

Master cylinder pulls brake fluid from aft reservoir. Make sure
the fluid level is above the clutch outlet hose.

Chances are it's the master cylinder because there is no place for
the fluid to go if the slave is leaking - except out and so the
leak would be obvious.

There are two different length clutch rods - and at least three
different manufacturers with incompatible piston-to-rod types.

The system won't bleed unless the master cylinder goes _all_ the
way out (pedal up) so if the rod is just a bit too long - no bleed.
