I went to the gym today. They reopened yesterday. They had moved some of
the machines farther apart, and had a limit of 4 people in the
sauna. Lots of disinfectant spray and paper towels for wiping things
down. Pretty good number of people there. Nobody was wearing masks.

The city has decided that they are not opening the swimming pools this
summer.

Meanwhile news out of Italy is that the virus has lost potency and "from
the clinical point of view, the virus no longer exists."

I bet I'm the only guy here, or nearly anywhere, who has programmed
the 9900 processor (in assembly language) _not_ using that TI machine!
We had one of their development systems in school. I also got a year on
that 029 keypunch. I used it for FORTRAN and Pascal. Greenbar paper,
baby! Things were a lot of fun back when everything was not the same.

Computing today feels a bit like that line from the Blues Brothers: "We've got

No riots out here in the country wither, unless yo count my wife going on a
rampage against the aphids on her eggplants. I had a dentist appointment a
week or so back, long overdue to install the new crown - the temp crown was
placed on Mar. 5th - it was longest one in a mouth that he could remember.
I was meet with fully masked, gloved, gowned staff who took my BP and temp,
then had to fill out a recent medical history form. I was allowed to sit in
the waiting room where the chairs were about 8 feet apart, but I was the
only one there.
Wore my mask into the operatory where i had to swish a peroxide based
liquid in my mouth for three minutes. The dentist came in, it took all of 5
minutes to pop the temp crown out and glue the new one in - it fit
perfectly, no "adjustment" grinding or anything.
They scanned the stub that the crown was to go onto and surrounding teeth,
sent the scan to the lab, who 3D printed a porcelain crown, and it worked!
Amazing.

[MBZ] Chinese Red Death Flu

2020-06-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Today I decided to call the eye doctor to see when I could get in. They just
started opening back up and said it was my lucky day I could get in at 2:15.
Went and did that of course they want you to wear masks. When I got back to see
the doc he had me take it off. I’m now getting old and will he getting
progressive lens this time. I then figured I would take advantage of the trip
to town and was able to get in to get a hair cut also. Sign on door said wear
mask but nobody in there was wearing them so I took mine off. Life is returning
to normal.

Tonight there are supposed be more riots.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dichotomy

2020-06-02 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I remember those days, had to decide if I wanted to buy a computer to do my
thesis or buy a good typewriter to do it, about the same cost (or rough it and
pay a typist).

My first was an Apple II clone (Laser was the brand, I think) with two 5.25"
floppy drives. Had that for a few years and swapped up to a 286 with an amber
monochrome monitor and two floppy drives by the time I was working on my PhD.
The Department had a HyType daisy wheel printer for final output, hand fed.
Quite chore printing a 90 page document.

Good old days, eh? Sometimes I think I prefer them, since I have to battle
tomorrow to get the license fixed on some Agilent GC software, stupid hard
drive crashed and I had to re-image the drive (Windows 10 is just as much a
pain in the rear as Windows 286) wiping out my license file. Naturally, the
guy that set it up two years ago got himself fired and the digital copy he had
is nowhere to be found

Strangely it seems to be only honest people with these issues, the malevolent
hacker types have all sorts of ways around such things

I started with computers in '76 using a TTY keyboard to access gummint
computers. Later, running CPM, I was able to see the evolution using some of
the TTY codes for editing etc. For some reason I was never able to get
interested in the games. I was too hooked on the productivity aspects of
computers.

Last night I spent some time on the heatwave BBS with my old TI99/4A. Its
pretty crazy connecting a 43 year old computer to a BBS that (at least
purportedly) running on a similar vintage computer. I played a couple door
games, good fun.
Today I created 6 VMs in Microsoft Azure for my students to connect to. I had
to modify my security group to allow each student's IP address and prevent
bad-guys from messing with me.
I'm finding the dichotomy of the two pretty interesting.
Also I've been asking students about their first computer. Considering most of
my students are my age or older I find it interesting that I'm in the minority
in that we had computers in the 1980s, (we got the TI in '83) most of my
students started with computers in the late 1990s...

Ah, the cam-switch antenna. I actually had some spare cams, but there's no way
I
could find them. What I do know is that the later electronic antennae are
nicer to have
anyway. I'd be looking for good used to refurbish. If you can still run yours
by switch,
that's not too bad of a stopgap.

2020-06-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
The engine and transmission swap is complete! I am happy with the upgrade. I
replaced the 240D drive train with a used engine, transmission and rear end out
of an 84 300D. I have been driving it the last few days and I am happy with
added power and higher speed drivability.

I still have to figure out the cruise control connections.

Question -Does any one know where the sensor is located on the 84 300D and how
to hook into the 83 240D chassis. It appears there are two sensors on the 300D,
one near the back of the engine and another on the front behind the fan. Which
one do I use?

Re: [MBZ] Update - Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-06-02 Thread Mitchell Haley EA via Mercedes
It might have been more fun if the 240D were manual, but this way you can
just build a 300D in a 240D donor body. Every part you need should be on
the 300D. I might be wrong, but I think the 240D auto is mechanically the
same, might have lower hydraulic pressures. 240D box with the valve body
from the dead 300D box might be an option.

You'll probably want to use a 300D differential.

I forget, is 1983 the last year for cheap license plates or the first year
for expensive plates?

Phase one is complete. I have removed the donor engine from the 84 300D with

checking other components and replacing as needed.
Next phase is removing transmission from 2nd donor car. (83 300D). I’ve been
told by several that the 240D transmission won’t hold up to the additional
torque of the turbo engine.
I will need a new/used exhaust system. Does anyone have any information on a
used stainless system that is for sale. Rick was able to provide one for my
last project (85 300D) that is currently in Texas and being used as a daily
driver by my daughter.
Mike

I have a rust free 1983 240D with a worn out engine and a rusted out 84 300D
with a strong engine. Looking for a write up or link to any information on
moving the engine from 1984 300D turbo chassis to 1983 240D chassis
Both are automatics The 300D transmission is trash, will the 240D transmission
matchup to 300D without modifications or performance issues?
The 240 has manual HVAC that I want keep.

I’ve already moved the differential from the 300D to the 240D and like the
better highway performance however the 240 engine is pretty worn out and
