Re: [MBZ] Froggy the SL is gone

2021-05-30 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I did some research on CL and eBay. Prices were a bit down. I suspect I got
about what the market would bear for the SL. There are a few 380/560 up here
that are priced optimistically. The SEA examples were not moving with pricing
a smidge higher than I fetched. Would have needed to be a WELL sorted example
to get above $10k.

I used brake cleaner to wipe off the paint just before I installed them -
didn't want to risk contaminating the new pads - but that was a long time
ago. Didn't think to ask here first, just did it. The pads worked very well
with the treatment. YMMV.

Never seen paint on rotors.

Years ago I got some rotors from Rusty or Jabba (can't recall) that had
a heavy, slightly tacky coating almost like a varnish. Seemed like it
should be removed but it took brake cleaner and a ScotchBrite pad and
some prolonged scrubbing to get it off. Maybe I should have tried paint
remover.

Lately the rotors I get at NAPA are maybe wrapped in oil paper and I
give them a shot of brake cleaner and a quick wipe-down and call it
good.

I would not remove it. Over the years, I have often bought new rotors that
had been "preserved" from rust with a light spray of machine oil.. which
came off as soon as a parts guy picked them up and replaced the oil on the
rotor with the sweat in his hand print, which then etched his print on the
newly machined surface...

It is likely your new rotors were coated with a non VOC paint [ie water
based latex] to replace the VOC based oil spray previously used... The
light paint coating will self remove as soon as you apply the brakes to bed
in the new pucks...

Yes, it is removed with the first application of the brakes.
It serves as an anti rust barrier to preserve the rotors while in long term
storage while waiting for sale.

[MBZ] W124 rear brake job

2021-05-30 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
I’m replacing rear pads and rotors on the 90 300D 2.5 Turbo. I bought original
MB rotors and pads. The rotors have a thin gray paint coating on them. I’ve
never seen painted rotors before. Is this coating meant to be removed?

Re: [MBZ] Froggy the SL is gone

2021-05-30 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
You need another OM603 machine.

Last week I put the battery back into my '87 wagon and gave it a good
wash. Been driving that for the last few days, what a great engine, and
such a smooth and comfortable ride. I really need to get off my butt and
convert the '94 wagon over to OM603 or perhaps OM606.

I’m currently in a “no Mercedes” situation. First time since 1977. It feels
