I have heard this before. But the strut bolts on my 79 TD came out with an
ordinary (manual) socket set. Maybe I was just lucky (and much younger).

As I recall, the factory used red loctite, which requires heat to

Re: [MBZ] 300TD hatch struts

2021-11-20 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The heat I used was a 1/2 inch air wrench with 120 psi air supply. It spun
them right out. On install, I cleaned the threads with a wire brush and
used a dot of red loctite, torqued to spec [don't ask what the spec is, I
don't remember, but I remember looking it up, at the time.] As someone
suggested, make sure the torque bit is seated properly before applying
force, removal or install.
Think of it as a fun adventure... ;)) ... the fun is not getting whacked in
the head once you replace the struts.. I did mine about 4 years ago, used
it today and still works like new.

You can still get powder detergent, at least my local Target carries it, I know
because I recently bought a box of Tide powder to try it on some grease-stained
shirts. It seems to me that it does a better job on grease stains than the
liquid detergent. I now use it for kitchen towels and any clothing with grease
spots.

As Jaime mentioned, laundry detergent is best. And I recall when this was a
topic during Dr. Booth's presence on this list, a key point was to seek out
so-called "HE" (high efficiency) detergent intended for front-loading

Haha yeah maybe but it’s gratifying to take something nice that is broken and
bring it back to life. Plus I could make some $$$ off it I guess. And plus plus
it’s a good learning experience on these transmissions.

I did notice the inner tread on the front tires was shedding wires so I guess
maybe it needs some new tires and an alignment. Maybe!

Re: [MBZ] Citric acid flush

2021-11-20 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I went to the local hardware store and the guy there said they used to have it,
for cleaning water softeners. But he couldn’t find any so I ordered a 5lb bag
from Bozos. It will be interesting to see what it does.

I put some dishwasher detergent in and warmed the engine and drove it a bit.
Temp is kinda bouncing around 80-100C, I noticed the electric fans are not
kicking on so will need to see what that’s about. I was thinking maybe the
thermostat but that’s probably ok.

I also noticed that the overflow fitting on top of the radiator was spewing, a
little plastic elbow held on with metal tabs that fits into a hole in the top
of the radiator. The metal tabs are loose. What a POS design. I guess that’s
where the coolant was going, aside from the failing radiator hose. I’ll have to
see what that’s about too.

Ugh.

I bought 5# back in 2012, 1-3 tbsp per gallon of hot water makes a great

5# this year but haven't broken in to it yet. Looks like its $26 for 5# on

Re: [MBZ] Moving engine

2021-11-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I looked at a youtuber of rebuilding one, basically some rings that have
to be replaced on the ram it looks like, finding the right ones might be
the issue as there are no particular markings on the cylinder to show a
manf or part number.  Some generic chinee thing I guess. There is a
hydraulic shop not far away, I'll swing by there this week and see if
they have the parts or can do it.  If they can maybe I should take my
various floor jacks to them too and get them sorted out.

So I moved the E500 engine off my little trailer with no assist
other than a coupla straps wrapped around the mounts. (Pro tip:  if
you’re at a junkyard and need straps to hoist an engine, rip some
seatbelts out of a car)

I backed up to the container and dropped the ramp onto the bed of
it, put down some plywood and basically just walked/dragged it off
using the seatbelt straps wrapped around the engine mounts, and
pulling on the exhaust manifolds.  It worked OK, got my second

Fun times. Now I need to get it onto some kind of rollabout so I
can move it around easier. More Egyptian technology needed!

[MBZ] Citric acid flush

2021-11-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I bought some citric acid to flush out the 95E320 today, I just put new
radiator hoses on it and there is some oily sludge in the system (yes,
head gasket probably going bad).  How much should I use to flush out the
system?  Mix it in some water and put it in the tank to circulate, then
drain and flush with clean water again?
