Subject: [MBZ] The rebuilt axles are back in the 300SD

As the attached pictures show, I got the axles rebuilt and then
reinstalled in my 1980 300SD.

The information I got from Philip and Max was very helpful.

I followed Philip's write up and things went well with only one exception:

My friend and I had a lot of difficulty putting the outer ends of the
half-shafts into the wheel hubs. We thought to use the bolts which are
used to hold the half-shafts in the hubs, but they were too short. We
ended up driving the six miles to my local hardware store where I bought
an M8x1.25 x 120 mm bolt (for $3.79!).

Back in the Big Room, I was able to thread the bolt into the end of each
half-shaft and quickly see which direction the outer CV joint had to be
manipulated to get the half-shaft's outer splines to line up more closely
with those in the hub.

I was also able to clamp on the head of the bolt and use a screwdriver to
pull the half-shaft's splined end into the hub, as shown in the third and
fourth pictures. We both were greatly pleased how well that worked.

So that would be like $19/5qt, about $3.50 lower than NAPA/Mobil1.

I totally understand. My local NAPA prices that oil at $35/jug, claiming a
markdown of $11.54 from a list of $46.49. I goofed up, I went back and looked
and when I did my original maths on this I made a mistake somewhere.

I checked Wal-Mart's website and found their lowest price on quarts of M1
is $7.97 and on 5 quarts of M1 is $26.97.

So now, for once, NAPA is cheaper.

My first thought was the same as Dimitri's, but I checked on NAPA's
website and found with the $25 card the final price of the oil is
$22.45/5qt jug, very competitive with Wally World. It is also the same
if you buy individual quarts, which is the only way 15W-50 comes through
NAPA.

So perhaps NAPA is feeling price pressure.

I will go to NAPA for two reasons:

- It's 10 miles closer than Wally World
- I know the fellow who owns the local store.

The sub-heading of the article says,

The governor said this third location is going to be an
80,000 sq ft. store, 120 fuel pumps and more than 720

That is quite massive!

[MBZ] Buc-ee's in FL

2023-04-08 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Not sure if they have other locations, but it appears that they’re building a
Buc-ee’s on I-75 about two hours north of Tampa. This is a very heavily
traveled section of interstate, I’m sure it will do well.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Tornados last week

2023-04-08 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Well said, Floyd!

Having grown up in central Indiana I was very familiar with tornadoes. The
things that Floyd described as taking place before the weather gets really,
really ugly, is quite true. The color of the sky becomes yellow, it becomes
very quiet. You know.

Fortunately, I never experienced a tornado while growing up, but not long after
we moved to Wisconsin, a very powerful tornado passed immediately south of our
former home. We were back in Indiana visiting family not long after this
occurred, and saw the devastation. Driving down SR37 where it is wooded rolling
hills you could see a swath about 100 yards wide like a lawnmower had passed
over the landscape.

Re: [MBZ] Bottom feeder question

2023-04-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
yeah new cats are not cheap and $800 is probably about right, plus
getting them welded in.  The guy I bought my CL600 from was going to
part it out, he has some business selling euro car parts and dealing in
cats, he said the car had $1600 worth of cats as there were 6 of them.

You could get some pipe sections welded in but you have to do something
to fool the O2 sensors and the ECU.  It is possible from what I have
read but not sure exactly how it works and how the car will run.  I
looked at a really nice 211 E320 that had a bad conductor plate and
straight sections where the cats had been, car ran OK but I'm not sure
how it had been sorted out.

$800 might be a bit high, I would try for more like $600 given what
would be involved in getting it sorted enough to drive or sell.

In 1974 or so I belonged to the flying club at Purdue.  If you washed
and waxed a plane you could get 2hr flight time.  So a buddy and I went
out to the little airport where the club was based to do that on a
Friday afternoon.  We were in the hangar waxing the plane and I went out
to the car to get something and noticed the sky was getting yellow, all
the birds and insects had stopped making noise, and it was feeling very
heavy and tropical.  The guy that ran the airport had a coupla dogs that
were always hanging around, they were nowhere to be seen so I figured
they had slinked off somewhere.  I came in and told my buddy we probably
needed to finish up quick and get out of there and head back to campus
before we got whacked.  Got in the car and put on the radio and tornado
warnings were blasting.  Both of us having spent our lives in Indiana we
were sorta used to this stuff but being that close was concerning.

We got about halfway back to campus and got whacked hard.  Raining so
hard couldn't see out the windshield, car was rocking around, wind was
howling, it was REALLY bad.  I had pulled off to what I thought was the
side of the road, could not see a thing, so at least I didn't think we
would get hit by another vehicle.

It all passed after about 10min so we drove on back to campus.  I was
living in the dorm at the time so went in, everyone was all jacked up
talking about the tornado that went over the edge of campus.  There were
2 tall dorms to the west, they said a tornado was bearing right down on
them but lifted into the sky at the last second and went over them then
back down on the ground. Very lucky.  We watched the destruction on TV
the next coupla days, it was really bad.

I took the plane up a few days and later and flew along the path the
tornadoes followed.  It looked a lot like those pics. I followed it for
over 20miles.  It had gone right through the middle of a little town (I
want to say Wabash) and had picked up a coupla spans of a steel truss
bridge off the pilings and moved them about 200ft and dropped them in
the river.  It was crazy.  You could see where the tornado had gone
through farms, between a house and a barn, both buildings intact but a
trench dug out right between them.  Cars and farm equipment was tossed
all over the place.  The destruction was pretty incredible but most of
the land was farm and forest so aside from the towns there was not as
much damage as there could have been.  It was very humbling to see just
how powerful that storm was.

We figured where we were in the car that we were not quite in the actual
path but not far from it to where we were getting the downflow wind and
rain from the cloud.  It was wild.  It had gone a bit north of the
airport where we were so it was safe there but I'm sure it was scary
there too.

Ebay is usually pretty good about confirming purchases. The only problem I
have encountered is when I accidentally opened a second account under a
different email address. It was impossible to close down that account.
Occasionally I mistakenly purchase something from the second account and
the confirmations go to that address rather than the one I am used to using.
