A distant acquaintance of mine scored one several months ago. He didn't
realise until he saw the car that it was the V12.

In very good condition (Silicon Valley) and well maintained by someone with
a lot of money. Are they really such a nightmare to keep on the road?

[MBZ] 07ML350 hulk

2023-04-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I had a couple hours this afternoon and did some knackering on it. Pulled all
the fuses I could find and relays and started in on some wiring and sensors.
Most of the electronic boxes are gone. Got the alternator off and started in on
coils and and voltage transformer and that stuff. I’ll pull everything off the
engine that is not valve train stuff which is probably munched. I forgot to try
to spin it to see if it’s locked up. For some reason all the spark plugs were
pulled out and in a door pocket. These engines are pretty small.

One tail light has been pulled but was in the car, I pulled the other one. All
the bulbs are gone for some reason.

I looked up on some websites and found the CoPart auction it was sold at
September last year. It looked pretty nice, $2850. I guess this guy pulled off
some body parts and electronics and then it sat. No listing of the miles.

I’m going to pull off the drive train and suspension as all that looks really
good. Those struts are spendy, has good Bilsteins on the rear. Break calibers
and all too. The booster and ABS module are on it too. I wonder how much is
same as on the 12GL.

Anyway kinda fun taking stuff apart when you don’t have to put it back
together.

I threw it up on fakebook for $1200 just to make a few hundred off it
without having to mess with it.  Of course this price point attracts
nuts.  I have only 1 guy who seems half way legit.  Sitting here
thinking about this, I have found exact part numbers on ebay for
anywhere from $80-$150 and a few different sellers offering cloning for
$125 where you send them your original and the donor ECU and they clone
it and ship it back.  So, for a couple hundred or so I should be able to
get a working ECU in it and see if the thing will start, which it
allegedly did.  I would then have to deal with the missing cats and go
from there.

If I did go this route and  buy one on ebay, I would assume if I plug it
into the car before having it clones, if it was good SDS should at least
be able to read it?   Perhaps I should put a little effort into it and
see what happens.

It’s actually a Jesus station but they host a bunch of other stations on their
transmitter so he stays busy mostly tending to the various equipment and feeds
and such but sometimes does some editing of shows they produce at the station.
Whatever the outfit is has a couple other transmitters around the country too
that he tends (mostly remotely but sometimes has to go to them to do Technical
Things).

When I was a kid there was a Sinclair gas station about 2 blocks away, a little
neighborhood station. I actually still have a green dinosaur 🦕 soap they gave
away, might be worth something maybe.

I believe the W126 has an electronic speedometer. Likely the issue is in the

Re: [MBZ] Chinese valve stems

2023-04-23 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes

I bought a bag of 25 Miltons from an eBay seller.
The pic had the word MILTON molded on the bottom of the stems.
The ones I got did not.
One year and counting on the first four I put in use, so issues so far,
but I'm not entirely sure I actually got what I went out of my way to
procure.

And yes, there is something amiss as that’s far too big an error to be tires.

in or on it.

Not as good a deal as the $400E500 which runs and drives but worthwhile for
parts. The interior and seats while now dirty are in good shape. Various bits
missing but guy says the transmission is good, engine failed. Has somewhat
cheap tires but they all have tread and air and the wheels are decent. Body
looks fairly decent under all the crust. No rust anywhere, very clean
underneath. It came with a tow setup, the towing apparatus is in the hatch for
some reason, guy says it’s all there. I’ll have to look for the Tow Brain.

I put a battery in it and it has a key but nothing came alive so I couldn’t get
it in neutral so I disconnected the rear driveshaft (it’s easier at the
transfer case for the rear as I discovered after wrestling with the diff end
flex disk and getting all the bolts off but couldn’t disconnect the flex disk).
For some reason the front doesn’t lock up. Tried to pull it and still locked
up but the GL managed to drag it out of its resting place.

Got the trailer up to it and tried to winch it. That was no fun. Oh yeah maybe
check the parking brake… duh… so I got it winched up on the trailer ok. I’m
wondering now if it might actually be in neutral and stupid me could’ve saved a
lot of work. Oh well.

I’ll start pulling stuff off it, maybe swapping into this 06ML500 I have, same
interior that is a little ratty. Getting the trans out will not be a lot of fun
but a worthwhile experience. The engine has all the bits still on it so good
alternator, compressor, PS pump, etc.

I think it was a good deal!

original size that was run on the car when it was new.

However, all things being the same except for the width (205 vs. 195) you
should only have an error of about 2%. That means at 60 mph you would really be

I bet that's an understatement, to put it mildly.

Aftermarket carb, radio. Interior looks pretty good except for that weirdly
warped radio speaker grille in the dash. I wonder if the blower motor works?

[MBZ] Chinese valve stems

2023-04-23 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
A year or 2 ago I bought a bulk package of 100 valve stems off Amazon. They
have been fine near as I can tell except for my trailer. I put all new tires on
it right after I got it and as always I replaced the valve stems. Within the
last few months, maybe 6-8, I had a flat and noticed the valve stem on that
tire was cracking. Flexing it cause it to leak. I figured perhaps I didn’t
replace them like I usually do but after popping the tire off the bead the
inside of the valve looked new. I went ahead and replaced the valves on both
tires on that side. I checked the drivers side and I don’t recall the reason
but I don’t believe I replaced those. I’m sure they were not cracked. Anyway, I
was just out on the back 40 pulling the front bumper off the GL I still had
loaded on the trailer when I noticed the right rear tire was flat. Hauled the
jack out there to pull the week and got it in the shop. I noticed the valve
stems are severely cracked and leaking again. Both of them on that side.
Drivers side is also cracking but not nearly as bad. I think the right side
gets more sun than the left from where the trailer is usually parked. I guess
cheap valve stems do not last when exposed to sun.

I have not ran into the same issue with these on cars. Perhaps because they are
not sitting as frequently exposed to the sun as much.

I am preparing for a 1400 mile round trip in a couple of weeks so I am going to
replace the stems again. This got me to thinking about going with the metal
ones that are held in place with a nut. I would think these would practically
be lifetime deals.

That is a good question. This is partly the reason I decided to list that CLK
that doesn’t run and has no cats on Fakebook for $1200 to see what happens. So
far I have had dozens of is this available, had a guy wanting to pay me $500
then would pay me an undetermined additional amount after he got it running.
Have had several saying the timing chain is bad to which I replied the M113
does not have timing chain issues.

Good questions. The tires are 205's (meet specs.). If I switch to 195s
would that make a big enough difference? I believe the 1985 models do
