> I feel sorry for people that must get taken advantage of all the time by > people like this. One reason I'm so determinedly DIY-biased. It's hard to know that you have engaged competent and honorable service, and it's almost impossible to pay someone to care about the results half so much as you do. Consider your recent experiences, and my experience with the mobile mechanic/butcher. (The welder who operated on the X5 is a crusty young curmudgeon. Reviews alternate between people who love the work, and people who hate the grumpy service. He wasn't there the first time I tried to bring the car to him, in spite of having called earlier that day. Strike? Maybe. However an old guy dropped by too while I was there, who had known him as a kid when he was first starting to weld, and we got to talking. Old gent had told the boy: "For this particular job it doesn't have to be perfect." Kid replied: "Yes, it does." So, it'll take more than one strike for me to go elsewhere, you can bet on that.) Anything that operates as a subscription service is biased towards treating the client base as mindless sheep, and is not particularly interested in quality of service. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

> I pulled off the seat switch and none of those wires seemed to do anything. They would not, nor should you jam power to them under any circumstances. Not on a car with memory seats. The switches are just inputs to the seat computer(s) that are under the seats. Applying power to the inputs with no power to the computer itself is just asking to fry something. You _can_ jam power to the motors, if you're sure that those are what you have hold of the wires to, and if they're not still connected to any kind of computer, unless you KNOW that mechanical relays are used to isolate. These days I'd expect an H-drive power transistor array sort of driver, but even those aren't safe to back-power. Not if they're part of integrated circuits. [MBZ] Benzing this evening
I have this $400 07 ML350 I bought for the tranny and other stuff for this 06ML500 I got some time ago with turns out a bad trans. Anyway the parts car is pretty nice but the engine kakked. I’ve been dismantling it. I’ve been wanting to get the driver seat out, the passenger seat was already detached, but it was all the way back and I couldn’t get at the rear track bolts. I found a seat power schematic so that was helpful but I couldn’t see the proper wires. I pulled off the seat switch and none of those wires seemed to do anything. I cut the main cable going to the control module under the seat but none of those wires was the right color. I looked under the passenger seat and the motor power wires were coming out the back of the control module which is up under the seat. Kinda hard to reach and detach from the driver seat but I managed to do that. Pulled the connectors off the back and there were the wires I needed! I made up a power cable with some wire and little spade connectors I have. Plugged those into the connector at the proper wires, touched a battery and there it went! I got the seat moved and tomorrow I’ll undo those rear bolts and get it out. It’s fixed. Upon arrival tested the contractor, it was showing .8 ohms, shorter. Replaced contractor, hooked up the wire that the first contractor removed from control board, system fires right up. Between a home warranty company and 2 contractors they couldn’t figure this out? Diagnosing time less than 5 minutes, maybe 30 minutes worth of work. 2nd contractor first offered to fix it for $888, then proceeded to mention they have only been paid $45 and said they could come out and replace the entire unit on Monday. I've been driving my $1500 Dodge V10 a lot recently, towing that wretched BMW X5 to various appointments many miles away. It's (truck) driving really well, and the V10 has plenty of power (300) and torque (450), and is rated to tow 13,300#. Thirsts a bit, of course, but on the whole it's been an excellent near-accidental purchase. I'm quite confident I can get my money back out of it, any time I might choose to sell it. I found a mechanic willing to work on the basket case X5 I brought him, and a welder willing to repair the engine block damage in-frame. I get to do all the shuttling. The welding is done now, it cost me $500 to have un-done the damage I'd paid the butcher $400 for. Beautiful work, the guy's an artist with the TIG.
