[MBZ] And it’s a diesel

Folks

I bought some lawnmower gas today here on tybee island … I like to use ethanol 
free and it cost $16 to over fill a 2 and 1 gal gas can … almost $5 a gal!!

In Savannah the spread between diesel and petrol is only about 20 cents … I 
think diesel is about 3.69 or 3.79 and gas .20 less.

So … I’ve been busting ass working on the new isuzu Npr Chevy box truck. I 
replaced the front brake pads. Still no brake pedal. Then I bled the system and 
it’s like a new truck.  Perfect brakes!! The recharged ac is still ice cold. I 
replaced the wipers and the front shocks. I topped off the oil and the 
transmission fluid is ok. I replaced one front shock and will do the other one. 
I lubed the doors and the tilt cab mechanism. I aired all the tires … the front 
are new looking but about five years old … I’m going to run them …. The rears 
look old … I’m going to swap them with the wheels and tires from my isuzu 
chassis safari trek spaceship motorhome … they are about 4 years old and have 
less than probably 5k miles so I need to use them up. I replaced the cab marker 
lights with led …. They are colder color temp and the led bulbs don’t heat up 
the lens which is nice. I’m going to do the rear box marker lights too because 
I can reach them easily but I’ll leave the side ones for another day. I’m 
waiting on an Amazon fuse looking led bulb for the dome light. This truck 
should be DOT but I insured it as a motor home and intend to fit out a tiny 
camper in the front of the box … l need an RV door and a window or two … I’m 
going to do this. I’ll take it on a 111 mile trip to the vast warehouses in 
Denmark, SC … I have 4 tons of red 81/2 x11 card stock to move.

Did the same with the BaT W123/300D. Was taking it for a test drive of about 20 
miles, and when I was out on the interstate it got really wonky so I pulled 
over. I think there were two lug bolts left in the loose wheel.

Yeah some do that. It's a bit of a PITA but what I try to do is torque them, 
take a short drive, do some hard swerves left and right, torque them again. 
Then check them after a few days of normal driving.

Yeah some do that. It's a bit of a PITA but what I try to do is torque them,

I did that shortly after Shirley and I were married. We had just gotten a
1964 190Dc and I had done some work on it. We took it out for a spin with
her driving. After going around two right-hand turns in our neighborhood,
I heard a strange noise. Remembering the wheel lugs, I yelled "STOP!" I
was then able to tighten up the lugs and have her proceed ...

[MBZ] OT: Oooooops

Some months ago, maybe May? I put the summer tires/wheels on Angie's '05 Golf. 
I didn't pay attention and after a couple days one went flat. I pumped it back 
up but Angie returned the car calling it "undriveable". I figured going flat 
had ruined the tire and made a note to deal with it.

We haven't had 3 days without rain since May and every time I've tried to deal 
with the dang thing it's rained or I procrastinated, or I procrastinated until 
it rained. 

Last Wednesday I had some time. I figured I'd take it for a spin to see what it 
was doing. The engine didn't even make one full revolution, flat battery. 
Unsurprising, it had been moved around the yard 3 or 4 times in the last 3 
months. So I put it on the charger and then a day on the desulfator.

Today I finally got it out on the road. It had a weird shudder/rhythmic thump 
that was worse when coasting and almost went away under power. Occasionally I 
could smell brakes.

Got it home, jacked up the passenger side, couldn't find anything wrong. Jacked 
up the drivers side and the bottom of the wheel slid out an inch, "What the 
heck?" Grabbed it to check wheel bearings and the dang wheel is loose. Thats 
when I noticed the missing wheel bolt...

I guess I'd never re-torqued the bolts and that one got loose. I tightened it 
up and checked 'em all, only that one was bad. I used to have that problem with 
my '98 Jetta but never with this car. Guess I need to be more careful.

Autozone has 4 replacement bolts for $12. I'll use this opportunity to get rid 
of the "security" bolts. That's what got lost, cursed thing anyhow...

[MBZ] Picked up the staggered 211 AMG wheels today

Bit of a road trip down to Jawja in the GL450, which’s AC was wheezing like a 
wall unit in a cheap motel. And it was 90F+. Might be the duovalve sticking or 
needs some cool juice. Gotta check on that. 

There were actually 5 wheels and 3 sorta half tread Continental tires (one 
still mounted). I guess one was a spare maybe?  I forgot to ask. Wheels have a 
bit of “patina” but look decent enough. Some buffing and an coupla cans of 
spray paint might do them wonders. And the price was unbeatable. $150 for the 
whole load. Yay me. And I asked him about the lug bolts too which he dug out 
and gave me. Yay more. 

Guy had another set of 10-spoke 211 wheels with good tires he was thinking to 
sell but not sure yet. He said probably $300. I said let me know and I’d come 
get them. He said he would. 

He had a 09E350 transmission in limp mode. He had bought a 722.6 kit which he 
realized was wrong. I walked him through the 722.9 process for a new conductor 
plate so he was gonna have a go on it. The car was realtor spec but in very 
good condition. It had some really nice looking seat covers on all 4 seats too, 
sort of a brick red on the tan seats, they were probably vinyl but looked like 
leather and had a good feel. Sounds icky but it actually looked pretty nice, 
like a Designo kind of thing.  He had those quilted floor mats too, similar 
color, and that didn’t look bad either. Strange that I liked it. 

I asked him what he would take for it as it sat and he said $3000. U….  I 
was nice and explained the reality of dead Benzes, which he understood, which 
is why he was going to try to fix it. I’d maybe go $2k on it and fix and flip. 
If he threw in those wheels and tires. The car had some aftermarket black 
wheels that looked pretty good too. 

He had a dead 84 380SL that looked pretty nice aside from bad paint on the 
hood. It started blowing black smoke one day so he put it in his garage. We 
talked about that bit. He had worked on it some. 

He said he’d trade both for a CLK convertible in decent condition. H.

His HOA was giving him shit about the cars in his driveway. (He lived in this 
horrific new vinyl village development that looked like it had just landed in a 
field) He had another E350 he or his GF drove and some other SUV or truck or 
something along with the limping E350, all in the driveway and was gonna have 
to do something about the limper soon. 

Productive road trip. Gonna keep in touch with the guy. And see about another 
tire or two for the AMG wheels and get them on the $400E500. I love finding 
cheap stuff to build up this car.

The radiator-end of it wasn't there, though.

I don't think it's missing a hose for the snorkel. While many of the models in 
this time frame had a hose that would extend to the radiator support, it 
doesn't look like there's room for one.

Gotta check for double timing chain, too. Probably has one due to the model 
year, but those weren't definitive back in the day.
