So with a quick scan of BanzWhirled’s W163 forum, it seems that fuel gauge 
issues aren’t uncommon. The float or whatever is used is inside the fuel pump, 
so if it’s not installed correctly or just boogered up, you have to replace the 
pump.

That said, people are saying that powering the car down for some time might 
cure it. It seems anecdotal in some cases, but it couldn't hurt if you were 
willing to do it. Some are saying to just pull the fuse for the fuel pump for 
an hour and that did it.

stopping to fill when I’d get to 1/4 tank left. Each time it took anywhere from 
9.0 gal to 10.2 gal to fill it. Once home, I ran it down to essentially E 
(needle hard on E, well below the reserve light). It took 14.3 gallons to fill. 
Seems suspect. Is it?
