Re: [MBZ] Axle challenge
I got the thing back together quite easily. I jiggered the inner joint around a bit and it slid right on! Yay in that. Getting the hub end back in with 2 LCA ball joints was a bit more challenging, one kinda conflicts with the outer CV joint but with various shifting around I got everything back together. Gotta tighten up the nuts and outer axle bolt in the hub then on to the right side. I’m gonna get another inner seal while I’ve got it apart. I was stupid snd didn’t order one, now I’m gonna have to go to the stealer. Called them this afternoon and their parts computer was down so the guy couldn’t check, but in JAX there were 27. Not that that does me any good tomorrow. I have to replace a LCA on the right, the ball joint was completely shot and rattling. Progress! --FT Sent from iFōn > On Jun 19, 2024, at 4:12 PM, Buggered Benzmail > wrote: > > The issue on both axles is this snap ring thing that sits in a slot on the > male axle spline then there is a corresponding slot in the female end. > Compressing it to get the axle off is the challenge. [MBZ] Axle challenge
The issue on both axles is this snap ring thing that sits in a slot on the male axle spline then there is a corresponding slot in the female end. Compressing it to get the axle off is the challenge. It’s brute force it seems, you just have to physically overcome the whole purpose of it. This one is on the left side with the male end on the diff. The ring actually stayed on the stub when the cup came off so I can reuse that one. I’m starting to try to get it back together and of course there’s no way to push the axle on, nothing to push on. I don’t really see how a compression tool would work either as there is a little ramp on the end of the female end that will fit over it, I’m not sure if it will actually compress it without some force. But I shall have at it. The ring is almost at the outboard end of the shaft, the corresponding groove is way up in the cup. --FT Sent from iFōn___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I finally got the turbo drain tube out after fighting it for 4 hours. This is nothing short of a whore of a job. Taking apart a 642 for an oil cooler seals job seems easier. Re: [MBZ] Success!!!
No not really. I had thought of that, using some sort of small hydraulic bottle jack but the issue is that the cup ends that fit on the intermediate shaft (both sides) sit up inside the frame rail on both sides. You can sorta reach in there from the bottom, there is a bit of opening but not a lot, and maybe with more clearance (car up higher than I have it) and a mallet and rod of some sort it might be possible, but then that might damage the bearings on the intermediate shaft. Plus getting some tension on the cable would be kinda hard given how the whole thing is set up. The main issue seems to be that there are retaining rings in a slot on both the intermediate shaft and the axles both sides, and these have to be compressed or something as the axle is being pulled out. This will probably be some sort of issue putting it back together, the WIS shows a compression tool like those things for getting fuel line fittings off, I have a set of those. This one they show is $150!!! --FT On 6/19/24 11:46 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: Was there any way to use the cable to put static tension on the dingus, and then whack the dingus with a hammer? -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archiveshttp://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- --FT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Success!!!
Yes. $400. It's basically two bars that fit either end of the inside part of the axle with threaded rods that connect the ends of each bar and the slide hammer shaft screws into one of the bars. Probably something I could make but that would have taken a fair amount of effort but maybe not as much as I ended up with. I don't know. --FT On 6/19/24 11:16 AM, Allan Streib wrote: I assume there's an expensive Mercedes tool meant for this job? And would it have been worth it?
