Re: [MBZ] 124 TE REAR SUSP QUESTIONS

2008-01-18 Thread Doug Quance
You dont have to get the lines from the dealer.
I had to cut one to get them out, and my local McParts had the correct
fittings.
Although it was longer and had to be bent.
Compare the $40 dealer price to $3.
The dealer one's I am told do not come pre bent.

Don: I really think your time and energy would be better served by trouble
shooting the existing system.

BTW, Marshall would admonish you for not telling us the car. :-)

I am guessing a late 123?

A voltmeter is inadequate to test glow plugs. An ohmmeter will give you some
indication, but the ultimate test is a dc current meter in series with the
individual plugs and connected to the battery.
I use an old dash type current meter, as you need it to read up to about 25
amps.

When your problem occurs it is not clear if the car starts ok or is the flaky
light bothering you?

On both of the relays did you thoroughly check or replace the fuse?

That link is quite accurate.
With one exception, the ultimate test is using a current meter.
They should draw about 20 amps initially.
Seeing it glow to me is not definitive.

Steve: I have used a small wheel puller.
You should mark the location on the shaft if you intend to put it back.
Only pull on the center hub.

Ken: I would suggest you check the timing first before worrying about
adjusting it.

I have done this statically using the IP locking device.
Just looking through the access port may give you an indication if it is close,
but I would recommend an accurate measurement.

I am attaching my procedure for checking and adjusting the IP timing.
Note it was done as part of a job to replace the flange or circular cam that
drives the vacuum pump.

Ken: White smoke can also be an indication of coolant in the combustion

How is the coolant level?

Re: [MBZ] Timing problem 87 300D Turbo

2007-06-15 Thread Doug Quance

Ken: Although I think you have other areas to check first, you can easily
inspect the inside of the oil pan. After draining the oil, simply remove the
oil pan extension.
A new gasket is a few $ and as I recall the torque on the bolts is about 7
ft/lbs.
I did this when my vacuum pump self destructed and it was relatively easy job
to clean out the pan.

Having said all that, your symptoms do not match the vacuum pump problem I
experienced.

Good luck.

Re: [MBZ] A/C problem on 126

2006-06-21 Thread Doug Quance
I would be surprised if the vacuum had anything to do with the A/C
blowing warm, it is most likely only used for the diverter flaps.
What I suspect may be happening is that when you floor the accelerator
it operates a switch to disconnect the compressor, thereby giving you
full power.

My 87 300TDT works that way.

Re: [MBZ] Replacing injection timing device

2006-06-21 Thread Doug Quance

Ned: I have done this several times on my 603 engine, I believe it is similar
if not identical.

The vacuum pump drive flange on the IP timing device should be lumpy, but it
should not be scored or rough in any way.
I would say for an average DYI it is not that difficult.
There is one special tool I would recommend, and that it the IP locking pin,
available from the dealer. Not expensive.

What was the symptom from the vacuum pump?

I also have a write up when I did mine, let me know if you want it.

Re: [MBZ] Anyone install a towing hitch on their 124 chassis?

2006-06-12 Thread Doug Quance

Richard: I had a hitch installed on my 87 300TDT some years ago.
I went to a custom hitch installer.
It has the small size carrier. I dont have any pics, however it has a support bar that extends under the fuel tank to a support over the diff.
Stronger than the one in the pic from one list member IMO.

Cost was surprisingly reasonable at the time, not sure of the exact $'s.

Re: [MBZ] 87 300TD cooling problems

2006-04-27 Thread Doug Quance

Kevin: IMO it is less work to leave the rad in place, you have removed the 2
piece plastic shroud I trust?

You definetely want to install the pump seperate from the clutch and fan.
I find it quite easy to install the clutch using a large strap wrench on the
pulley.
Or as one pro said a belt (like the kind for your pants), tightened with a
screw driver or such also works.
Then I have a large allen key set, remove the 8 mm key, and use a snipe on it
if necessary to gain leverage.

Depending on your skill you may wish to put cardboard next to the rad to
prevent damage, I wing it myself. ;-)

Good luck
