Re: [MBZ] way too much for this car
KBB is the last place to go to get a value for one of these cars. IMO Kellys Blue Book is a very reputable source and has been in the vehicle apprasial business for a very long time and I would think that they know a thing or two about the value of vehicles. Whats next, Mercedes doesen't know about cars. The fact that somone payed that amount of money for that car (which is not perfect...has a dent on the roof) shows just how gullable you humans are! =)
Re: [MBZ] Opinions (was: WAY too much for this car)
it is way overprice...read the blue book value...shit, you can even double that and it STILL isn't what it sold for.

Re: [MBZ] way too much for this car
too bad it's firm. you need to deduct for the pioneer deck, the disk changer, and the fact that you have a #14 head and have overheated it. We were all on the list when that happened. Oh yeah, and my head is cracked (which it isn't) just like you all told me.
Re: [MBZ] Opinions (was: WAY too much for this car)
What it sold for was what it was worth!! Anyone that sold it for less would be a FOOL! Like I said earlier...I think wagon owners tend to 'puff' the value of their cars. You wagon drivers are like users of Macintosh computers! PS all in humor and not trying to start a flame.

Re: [MBZ] way too much for this car
I'm shocked at how CHEAP it went, considering what you were getting. Brand new leather on all the seats? That's insane. Actual dyno graphs proving no clogged ALDA plumbing, wow. It's still got R-12 (hooray!), Valentine-1 hardwire (nice bonus), resealed tranny, NEW radiator AC compressor... the list goes on. If I had been in the market for a 87 wagon, I would probably have bid much higher than what it sold for. I think the new owner practically stole it... That car isn't even worth even $4,000. Who says small cars aren't safe? Just because the car is intact doesen't mean that the passengers survived; on the contrary, the more parts that crumple or fly off the car the more energy that is released, this means less energy transfered to the passengers and less injury. I don't know if the passengers would have survived that, for sure they wouldn't have walked away.

The colder it is, the longer it takes to raise the temperature of the prechamber and of the ballpin to a temperature hot enough to ignite the fuel! For the preglow light to work properly, everything MUST be working PERFECTLY. I'll wager that the calibration of the preglow light will NOT be correct in any Mercedes that's more than 10 years old that hasn't had every part of the preglow system replaced. Most glow plugs with 200kmi on them ARE far from perfect (even if they measure 0.6 ohms). Most city driven engines don't have really clean prechambers either and if the glow plugs are carbon encapsulated, it can take a LONG time for the temperature to heat the prechamber (much longer than the light will be on). The so-called FAST plugs (the ones designed for afterglow function that cost about 2-3X what the original plugs cost) can reach ~90% of max temp (1180 deg. C. is the max) in 3-5 seconds while it can take the old style plugs 10-15sec to reach that temperature even when NEW. Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) On 11/1/05, Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Rhonald Angelo wrote: Hey Kevin, Marshall, what is transmission flaring and what does it sound and feel like when driving? As the transmission shifts, the engine will race and the car will usually slow as the shift does not complete promptly. This can be slight or it can be massive. This can result from MANY causes. Excess vacuum modulation (vacuum control valve set incorrectly) can cause it (but this is rare). This may be nothing more than the results of the fluid being low and the weather being cold. Then the first few shifts may well flair. Check to be SURE that the transmission fluid is at the upper line after the car has been driven for 15-20 minutes. If in doubt, have an experienced Mercedes mechanic check the symptoms. If this only occurs when the car is cold, drop the car off to the mechanic the night before and have it checked WHEN it's cold. Worn seals in the transmission CAN result in what's often called morning sickness when the shifts are very slow/soft for the first few shifts when the weather gets cold. This is caused by age/wear and can only be cured with a transmission rebuild! If the flair is confined to just the 2-3 up shift, it may be cured with a relatively simple spring replacement that used to be outlined on the MBZ articles page (but isn't now). My '67 200D used to snap my neck on the first few shifts of the day when it was cold unless I was VERY careful. Finally in the mid '80s they got it right. The early '80s transmissions CAN be modified, but it's usually not worth the cost and labor unless you are rebuilding the transmission. The Mercedes rebuilds, used to come with all the latest updates (and MOST aftermarket rebuilds did not). If EVERYTHING is adjusted properly (put gauges on the transmission and set the pressures, adjust the vacuum modulator, set the shift linkage so the up and down shift speeds are correct and the vacuum from the vacuum control valve varies from high at idle to none at full pedal) then changing the modulator to one of the improved ones MAY be worthwhile. Last time I checked the revised modulator was well over $100 and I expect it's gone up since then. Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) I couldn't afford to shell out the $900 or so (street price) for a replacement cat, so I made up a custom Y pipe and tied it into the new rear muffler. With almost 10' of straight pipe before the muffler, it is EASY to understand the purpose of a resonator. I have seen a marked improvement in performance, especially at the upper RPMs, but I now get the dreaded angry vacuum cleaner sound under full throttle. I am planning on installing an inexpensive glass pack midway on the pipe to resolve this. All in all, I am very happy with the results. Re: [MBZ] converting to synthetic oil?
my dipstick only has a low and high mark...i've seen nothing that says add. On 10/27/05, Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Gabriel S. wrote: Marshall, Could you explain how over filling with oil is bad for the enigne (dont get me wrong, i believe it, i just don't see how it could be bad)? There are MANY reasons why overfilling is bad. The MAX mark is just that - NOT the optimal level. 1: When overfilled, additional oil is burned and ejected. This results in additional smoke and carbon accumulation in the engine (and oil costs increase) and excess oil is flung about. Even at only the MAX mark, engine oil consumption at highway speeds on MOST all of the Mercedes engines I've ever owned was double or triple what it is when the oil level is at the mid point or lower. 2. Additional oil can enter the combustion chamber unmetered and this CAN in extreme cases result in engine runaway and destruction (usually the engine must be overfilled by at least several qt for this to happen). 3. And my favorite argument ;-). Mercedes points out that optimal oil level is midway between the ADD and the MAX mark. If we make the assumption that oil consumption is linear (not true, but sufficiently true for this simplistic example) the sump is filled to the MAX mark and spends ~33% of the time there, 33% of the time at the midway point and 33% of the time at the ADD mark, the oil level is only at the mid (optimal) point 1/3rd of the time. If on the other hand the oil is filled to 1/3rd above the mid point and allowed to drop to the ADD mark, the oil will be at the optimal level half the time rather than 1/3rd of the time. That's certainly a measurable improvement! Just follow Mercedes recommendations that the oil level must NEVER exceed the MAX mark (I fill my cars to half way between ADD and MAX)., Never add oil until the oil level reaches the ADD mark. there were a few contributing factors to my running out of fuel, not all of which were my fault If you run out of fuel on the side of the road I feel that it is completely your fault and once again, you should be fined for being on the side of the road due to that. You should be fined on an hourly basis for creating *UNNECESSARY LOSS* because of your poor judgement. There is *absolutely no* reason for running out of fuel other than negligence and stupidity on the drivers side. *NONE*. I don't know where he's from, but around here if you want a service, you have to pay for it, that's what AAA is for, you pay and they *have to* tow. I suspect this is the type of person who goes to McDonald's and takes back food because it isn't 3 minutes fresh or is on welfare. Re: [MBZ] 1987 300TDT (W124) Climate Control Problems
Mine does this too, you have to buy the whole climate control unit. When the system goes into heat mode (temp dial between 22 and 18, EC button pressed, fan on auto, outside air at 55 degrees F)), the air seems to only come out of the defrost vents and the lateral vents on the ends of the dash. The climate control (ACC) seems to switch between full heat out the defroster and lateral vents and cool air from the center and lateral vents to try and keep the interior temp at the right temp. The ACC doesn't seem want to use a medium fan setting with only warm air for some reason. Placing the temperature dial at max with the solid down arrow and outline up arrow button pressed (with or without EC marking), and the fan button at auto seems to make no difference, the air still comes out of the defrost and lateral vents. Additional info: The fan operates properly at min, max, and auto when pressing each of the buttons. Occasionally when I turn the climate control on, I can hear a faint clicking sound from behind the glove box area and nothing happens initially until after 5 or 10 seconds. There are also occasions when I press the off button, and the climate control system runs for about 15 seconds, and then it shuts off. The only time I am able to get air out of the footwell vents is when I press the button with the solid up and down arrows. I have tested all of the vacuum pods and they all hold 15 in Hg of vaccum except the center vent pod. I have also swapped the hoses for center vent pod and the air diverter flap pod to get air around the bad center vent pod temporarily. The air sample fan is working properly since it seems to hold a small 1 cm square of paper at it's intake point on the dome light. I have the MBZ Climate Control Service Manual, and I have run the functional tests and based on the results the manual says to run the electrical component test which seems to require a special test instrument/breakout box that cost 400 dollars plus. An opinion of mine: Successfull women who support themself are ususally the ugly ones. The reason is because they have to, no man will support them. Meanwhile the hot ones don't need to be successfull because they can find a successfull man to support and pay thier bills. I know it sounds far fetched but it's true, and yes, of course there are rare exceptions, but that, generally is the rule. Don't believe me? Is leaving your diesel idling really all that bad? I suspect it isn't. I'll tell you this much, my boat has a Straight 6 Volvo Diesel and I idle that thing all day long when trolling for fish and still no ill effects. I don't know what it is about my car, but even though she lights up on the first crank I still find it harder to start than a gasser, who knows, maybe its the effort required to turn the key on a Benz thats harder, all I can say is that I tend to leave her running when possible. I don't know...I think a diesel is actually *easier* to start than a gasser once it's warmed up. It's only cold starts that are tough. The most extreme examples of this are the normally-aspirated IDI VW diesels, which, when fully warmed up, will consistently fire on the first compression stroke, even with no glow cycle. I once push-started a friend's VW Dasher by hand after his starter failed, and we got it going by popping the clutch in reverse after I'd rolled it about five feet to build up momentum. Piece of cake. Idling for long periods is hard on diesels because it cokes up the injectors. The heat problem in sleeper cabs was actually solved long ago, though it requires some capital investment -- Stewart-Warner and several other companies make little diesel-fired furnaces for cab heat. Some of them can even preheat the coolant for cold starts. A/C in hot weather is a tougher problem, of course. ___ For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net -- Gabriel Soto Southern California 1987 300D 230K=-

It will certainly lengthen the time required to come up to operating temp, which will increase engine wear; the question is how much. On the other hand, it may well reduce, or eliminate, as he claims, overtemp episodes by increasing the flow rate through the thermostat apparatus when the bypass valve is closed. If the temperature stabilization is as good as stated, then its usefulness would depend on how much longer it takes to reach operating temp. If it is only a extra minute or two then it is worth a try. If it takes much longer than that, then I would be concerned about wear issues. The delay effect may not be as bad as it might seem because flow resistance laws dictate that, even with the holes, most of the coolant will still circulate through the bypass when cold instead of the radiator. I wish I could get it to stop leaking though. Anybody else hear of this? Mobil 1 HAS in it an additive that will stop modest leaks (that were caused by conventional oil swelling the original seals and wear reducing the material). Most owners that have small leaks and switch to M-1 find that after several changes, the leaks seal or are at least diminished. If you have holes that are plugged by sludge or combustion residue, the M-1 will dissolve them and the leak MAY commence, but only because the ALREADY damaged or improperly sealed engine has been cleaned. An engine that's not maintained or one that's abused (and overfilling with oil or frequently topping up the oil BEFORE it reaches the ADD mark IS abuse) will start to leak no matter what oil is in it. If it started leaking after you changed to M-1, who's to say it wouldn't have started leaking had you NOT changed - it wasn't just time to start leaking? WHERE is it leaking? The first step it to identify the precise location and cause of the leak. Once you know where and why the leak you repair it! Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) It's just my opinion and my response was all in humor and not ment to upset anyone to the point of calling me gay, which probally reflects your own chimera. On 10/25/05, Dave M. Re: [MBZ] Trunk lock
The Rumble seat idea is brilliant and has mine beat by a long shot! I would honestly say to keep trying different locksmiths, theres gotta be one out there that can handle the problem. If I have to drill out the lock and that doesn't work, I might try Gabriel S.', but I'll probably make a rumble seat out of it. The first car in my family back in the 1930s, an Oakland, had a rumble seat and it was great.
