With some exception, we use guns for sport. And those exceptions would use
a

We

target practice and hunt animals. And by the way, shooting plastic bottles

What exactly is the difference between backyard gun factories in the
Khyber pass and big factories in the States pumping out assault weapons
at a rapid rate?
Is there a mentality in the US that states that only you should have
guns so you can control everyone else?
Far as I am concerned it is not sobering stuff but a sad reality of the
world that we have created. If there was no demand for weapons they
would be making something else to survive, perhaps hammers and other
tools to build things with.
So might I suggest that you get off your high horse and lead by example.
Long as you are pointing weapons at people, weapons will be pointed
back. Whether these weapons are made in a hut or a modern factory does
not matter, they still kill just the same.

Discharging the battery swells the plates, and high capacity batteries
have been known to fracture with a complete discharge (deep cycle
batteries have more space between the plates to prevent this, that's why
they are larger for the same capacity).

Battery is toast if it will not accept the correct charge and rate. Get

Let's not get carried away in heaping praise on these dinosaurs.

They are in reality gas hogs with pathetic 3 speed transmissions, clunky
vinyl interiors, easily frozen heater levers, and prone to rust. I will
admit that they are spacious and comfy, however.

in the picture, it has both a 120 VAC input and screw terminals for a
12V battery.

If it's 12V, it's not a serious whole-house thing. A car-battery
sized AGM (or whatever) is only good for maybe 1kW of output power.
All the bigger systems I know of are 24V or 48V. Mine are all 48V.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking of running the whole house on it---more like
about 300W or so ( a low power micro-ATX PC, other misc electronics,
some fluorescent lights). The batteries would go in the shop in an
airtight enclosure along an outside wall, with a vent to the outside.

So like OK Don say, will hooking up the solar charge controller
directly to the battery along with the charge/discharge terminals from
the charger/inverter cause havoc? I know there are big, expensive
multiple-source charge controllers for whole-house systems, but the
idea here is for a cheap hack...

I have a geo unit. Due to a small lot on a golf course, I had to go
straight down. Three wells, 30 feet apart, 220 feet down each, 3/4 inch
looped tube in each well ties into a manifold and is pumped to the
compressor with a small pump, smaller than a soft ball. Temperature of the
alcohol water mix was 60 degrees F, 12 years ago and remains that now.

Mine cost three times that of an air unit, but like Jim said, if you have
room to install the tubes in a horizontal ditch, its much cheaper. Having
a six foot deep pond nearby is even cheaper.

Harry

There's a company up here designing some that can work down to

-40F. I'm

considering one of the type that circulates coolant through a deep

hole.

I was told recently that the air-exchanger heat pump can run down
to about 20F, and uses about 50% of the energy of electric heat.
The newer ground-exchanger pumps will run down to whatever you
get in your area, and use about 33% of the energy of electric
heat. That's what I'd want, of course. We have acreage, so
we perhaps wouldn't have to go deep, cutting the cost of
installation.

strg box, remove plug for the centering bolt, turn wheels off center.
Remove the reservoir cap, all the fluid runs out of the box.

Refill does take some time as there will be a lot of air to work out of
the system by turning the wheels lock to lock.

Looks like some political discussions are sneaking back into the list. A
reminder that politics on the list is not allowed. It needs to stop now.
Lets keep the MB list friedly and more on topic.

Score! The U-Pull had in a 190E 2.3, so I dropped by, even though
the weather was miserable, with heavy cold rain. It had both of the
rear taillights in excellent condition, so they are now mine, at $6
each. I also got both exterior heated mirror glasses, for $7 each. I
also got the Klima and Kickdown relays to go into the junkbox, or
perhaps onto eBay. They had a 280SE (116) that I grabbed the spare
tire holddown from. Maybe it'll fit, it looks vaguely like what I
might need.

They also had in a 300SE (126). It had one rear taillight lens in
excellent condition, now mine for $6. (SDL spare.) I also got its
auxiliary trunk latch tongue, which the SDL has been missing for
some time, and the two rear reading lamps (with the expensive bulbs)
for $1 each. I also got one exterior heated mirror, for $7. They also
had a 280SE (116) and it had its complete toolkit, though very rusty
and the roll was rotted. That was free.

Both the 190E and the 300SE still had the EHA valve I was looking for
for my 560 SL. Perhaps at least one of them is still good and will
work?

All in all a pretty good day, except for the weather.

valves rebuilt, and I don't know the price on that, but expensive.

This is assuming the air compressor is good

 Folks:

My 300TE has a leaking head gasket. You can smell coolant out the
pipe, see a bit of steam on startup, and the #1 plug got so fouled
with other-than-oil calcified coolant crud that it stopped firing the
 other day.

While I was buying a new plug, I noticed a sale on Bars Leaks brand
head and head gasket sealer, which purports to seal bad head gaskets
and cracked heads. Since this car basically just hauls stuff around
town and probably only gets driven 5k a year at most, and I'm not in
a position to rr the gasket at this point, does anyone have any
experience with this product? I dimly remember someone--was it OK
Don?--saying they'd used it or something similar on a 300SEL for many
tens of thousands of miles and it worked, but I'd love confirmation
of this before pouring it in. Other than that, car runs great. Uses
some oil, but no blue smoke.

 Thanks!

 Dan

Thermo Tec They offer a clamp on and adhesive - which kink did you use?
What brand? How long did it take?

I'm considering it for several of my cars as IMO heat under the hood
 causes
a lot of damage to rubber components, etc and anything done to reduce it
(Thermo Tec says it will reduce underhood temps up to 70%) will extend
 the
 life of many parts --

Yes, and if you have a turbocharger it will respond quicker on the
opening of the throttle. What engine were you applying it to?

The high temp coatings, tho much more expensive, will contain the heat
too, as they are coated on the inside as well as the outside. The wrap
has been known to burn out tubing headers but shouldn't hurt cast iron.

The engine in mine was in pretty good mechanical condition and even so it
only got around 14mpg when tuned perfectly. But all that was forgotten

subsided and best of all the chassis changed the whole character of the

The suspension became smooth and compliant - soaking up bumps and tar

I finally solved the very loud roaring noise on my 78 240D - when speed was
above ~25mph there was a very loud roar - like a large fan - but when the
wheel was turned left even slightly the noise stopped - we replaced all
front wheel bearings and front brakes and the noise is gone. All 4
 bearings
were pretty loose though not broken. No blue marking on the races or
bearings - but they were obviously loose and caused the noise.

that my grandmother had come to visit me and we spent a nice day walking
 around the Naval base.

About a week later, I received a letter from my mother that my grandmother
had died in Pennsylvania on the same day of my dream.

My wife says that she has had a dark visitor come into our bedroom
 several
times over the past, and each time that she has seen or dreamed of this
vistor, it was a precursor to our getting a message that a relative had
died: her mother, her father, and my aunt.
I don't know if these things or the other types of paranormal events can
 be
explained rationally at this time. Certainly, they cannot be investigated
with scientific rigor with the current tools available.

But, I wonder if these events are only para-normal because we do not yet
have the means to observe and document the events. Perhaps there is an
alternative form of reality which we, at the present time, can only
 perceive
 in fragments.

The situation could be analogous to that of the ancients who could only
perceive of a flat earth until the tools and science were available to
demonstrate that the earth was round. Similarly, pre-Copernicans perceived
the sun rotating about the earth until they had the telescopes and
mathemathics to understand what the real situation was.

Perhaps we see paranormal events as a sort of hysteria/magic/etc, because
 we
don't yet have the tools and the science/mathematics/psychology to
understand a different level of reality?

 were
three knocks on each door in sequence throughout the house, ending with my

I am replacing the generator regulator for the third time in my

at all times and no charging.
with the regulator replaced the charging light activates on ignition
and goes out on starting the engine , The charging voltage is around
14.1 V and battery charges rapidly till the unit fails again without any
warning . No red light activating , only the interior lights going dim
tell me the charging has stopped.

I have checked the ground strap at the generator and the engine ,it is
clean and sound connection . what to check next, seems as a large spike
from something wipes out the regulator.

How is the brush length on what you remove? Could it
be the slip rings just chewing the brushes much faster

All of a sudden, the serpentine belt wants to jump track and the
Alternator Pulley is loose again. I tighten it back down and it
loosens again. WIS says: Due to a setting condition of the pulley
mounting components, the alternator pulley may become loose. Replace
Alternator. Retightening a loose alternator pulley will not insure a
 permanent fix.

Anyone know what's going on? Seems a shame to replace an otherwise
 good alternator.

I'm not even sure which CIS system was on the 1985 380, but the

It's one of the CIS-E systems. Definitely has an O2 sensor.

simplest thing would be an O2 sensor. At least the bozos who
made the estimate admit they can't fix it, so they just want
to replace everything. I guess that's better than replacing
one part, then telling you they need to replace another...

It could indeed run to a whole bunch, _if_ the fuel distributor
has rusted inside and needs replacing. But I bet if you can
take it to an actual expert it'll cost a whole lot less.

Ours was starting badly, and new ignition tune-up parts
(rotor, cap, wires, plugs) made quite a difference. Still
idles a bit rough, and is cold-blooded, but runs nicely.

starts to be unresponsive at more than 1/4 and when warmed up, 95C, runs
 OK.
If the car is then stopped for approx. 1/2 to 1 hour, on re-start the
car will start to stumble for about 15-20 seconds and will not
accelerate, then almost as if a switch was closed the car then accel.
 normally.
My tired old brain can only come up with a couple of ideas.
 1. The cold start injector is activated then shuts off.
 2. there are one or more injectors dribbling fuel after the car is shut

We used to check motorcycle drive chains for wear by laying them stretched
out flat, measuring them, and then pushing them together and measuring
again. It works better if you degrease them first so that you don't have
oil taking up the slack in the pivots. For a motorcycle chain, 4% is
considered worn out. I would imagine allowable wear for a cam chain is a
lot less than that, perhaps an imperceptible amount when not under
 tension.
Did you check to see how far behind the crank the cam was before you
 took the old chain out?

Re: [MBZ] W108/M117 ignition

2008-03-05 Thread mak
The Pertronix igniter i have used in my 280s /108. has performed
flawlessy over a period of ten years .

i believe the Pertronix dealer Retro Rockets carried the Igniter units
for the V-8300SEL /109 .
I think it was $ 89 + shipping.

Subject: [MBZ] W108/M117 ignition

 Gang,

Wondering what the current wisdom is with ignition on the early M117
 engines (W108 4.5).

I've heard about the Pertronix system and some others. I see that 123
Ignition (they seem to be better respected in Citroen circles than, for
example, Luminition) is now offering 4- and 6-cylinder Mercedes kits, and
they appear to be willing to build them to order for 8-cyl engines on
 request.

The car is generally running OK but seems to miss a little here and there
at idle, and also seems to surge/hesitate under partial load. Some of this
could be injection air metering, although that probably doesn't explain
the missing as it is rather infrequent and doesn't repeat over more than
 one firing.

My question is: what do people typically do to stabilise the ignition,
eliminate the trigger points issue etc etc. Just trying to make a plan on
how to sort out the car, system by system.

The bulb itself. Car won't charge if the bulb is burnt out.

  Gang,

The centre console on my 280SEL (with column shifter) has a fifth switch. It
looks exactly like the single rocker switch in the rear door. The extra switch
is located between the two rows of double window switches. The car doesn't have
a sunroof, and in any case I believe sunroof switches were normally on the
dash. Could this be the antenna height switch (the car has an electric antenna,
but I doubt it is the original because it isn't a Hirschmann) or is there some
other option that I don't even know I have!?

I have a 1960 Mercedes fintail, 6 cyl. Engine runs, car needs body work
ect.. rocker on drivers side, drivers floorboard needs repaired. Car would
be good for parts or to restore.
