[MBZ] Want my 83 300D?
I'm finally giving up my 1983 300D. 207K, 4 extra Blizzaks with plenty of tread on MB wheels, 4 newerYokahamas, newer timing chain (197K), maroon with beige interior, always M1 since I've owned it, a/c and heat good, trans races a little going into 3rd, (which it's done for 40K), engine's great(uses very little oil), compression is good and even, door buttons and trunk locks work with key and vacuum system, all gauges and switches work(not tach), two windows don't work(they did last fall), cruise doesn't work, tach just stopped working recently, body shows rust, and interior looks worn. My daughter bought it in 11/03 and gave it to me afterward. I've never done a VIN search, but if you want to: WDBAB33A7DB023031. We live in Evanston, IL, just North of Chicago. I have full confidence that it can drive anywhere. I have no idea what it's worth to you guys, but I'll give you the first shot. Make me an offer. Thanks. [MBZ] Antenna mast removal
I know this has been discussed before, and the procedure should be easy. I can't remove the antenna mast from my 83 300D. I removed the notched threaded ring, the black gasket, and turned on the radio to activate the up antenna. As the antenna was going up, I pulled on the mast. It didn't come out. I repeated this procedure with the same result. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. MikeN

Re: [MBZ] Trying out 0Wxx Mobil 1
I've been using Mobil 1 0w40 for the last five winters. I change to M1 15w40 for the summers. I live in Northern IL. My 83 300D has 192, 000 mi. on it, and I've put about half of these miles on as the second owner. When I got the MB even after valve adjustments, gp changes, etc., I had trouble starting it in sub 25 degree weather w/o it being plugged in. After changing to M1 0w40 and keeping up with the maintenance, since I changed to synthetic, winter starting has improved greatly over the dino stuff. BTW, I may burn 3/4 of a quart of M1 every 2, 500 mi. And...the car has quieted down greatly. Just my experience. MikeN
[MBZ] Some amazing MBs
I need some bodies helps, please. Since I'm computer challenged and on the digest, I would like to post pictures of four very special MB's that my indy owns. If some one out there would accept these photos, I will try to send these to you so you could post them on the list. Thanks. MikeN

Re: [MBZ] low idle pulsating idle when engine(not ambient temp) is cold
Christopher McCann wrote: So I drove the 1985 300SD for 300 miles the other day. No problems. Next morning, I start the car, need to depress the accelerator to get it to start (it was not cold out) and once started, if I left off the pedal, it would stall. After holding it at normal idle for a minute or so, it would idle at low speed, but not stall...unless I put it in gear. Once the engine is up to operating temp, it idles perfectly normally and there are no other problems... It now does this every time I start it when the engine is cold. Ambient temp has nothing to do with it. Any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks, Chris Chris and all, I, too, have just about the identical problem, and my valve are adjusted within specs. The compression on all five cylinders are good. The only thing I have noticed lately is that I seem to use more oil than I used to, about a quart every 1200 miles. Also, when I floor the accelerator I notice smoke in the rear view mirror lit be approaching headlights. I know Chris and I would really like to solve this problem. Re: [MBZ] Can't Open Trunk
Alan I know this sounds so simple, but my wife often had trouble opening the trunk. I had to show her to turn the key all the way counterclockwise, then push the cylinder in with the key inserted, then lift the trunk lid while leaving the key in the counterclockwise position and the cylinder pushed in. Hope this helps. Mike Netzky
[MBZ] 83 300Dt wheels?

Re: [MBZ] 300Dt trans
Alan I like your suggestions. Driving it today, I experienced no slipping, just slight bumping when it shifts. I think an experienced MB shop is a very good first step. I live in Evanston, IL, just north of Chicago if anyone has any recommendations. Also, thanks to all who responded to my door lock and water leak requests. The water leak was solved by cleaning out the hinge wells under the hood, and the vacuum door lock problem was solved by Rusty's replacements of three actuators. Thanks, again. Mike Netzky In a message dated 9/3/2006 5:14:2 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Mike: That sounds like low mileage for a bad transmission. You need to find an mechanic that has experience with this type of MB transmission. He will be able to either adjust it for no slips, tell you he can make it some better, or pronounce the tranny is toast. Your run of the mill repair shop will not know how to do the adjustments. I'm not sure where you are located, perhaps a list member in the area can recommend someone. You might ever consider the MB dealership. If the tranny is toast, don't use a regular tranny shop. They have probably never worked on a MB transmission. You can get a rebuilt from Rusty for around $1,850 and get it installed for $300-$500. Of course, shipping of two transmissions might cost a bit. I think there is another rebuild shop in New Jersey that some have used. Since the car is in great shape I wouldn't hesitate to replace the tranny. As other posters have said that is 4-5 payments on a new car, or if you get another older MB it will likely take that much to get it into the same shape as your car. Alan Duff Knoxville, TN
Re: [MBZ] 300Dt trans
Alan There are 187,000 miles on the car. I'm not the original owner so I don't know what has been done before I got it. I got it 40,000 miles ago. The fluid/filter was changed/flushed very recently. The mechanic said he adjusted something. It seemed to have changed the shift pattern slightly. Today when I drove it, it didn't seem to race/slip as much, but tomorrow's another day! Last week I took it to a tranny shop, and they said they would fix it for 1,800-1,900 dollars. Someone else said I should put in an exchange/rebuilt one. Even though the car is in great shape and I love driving it, I know the car is not worth the price of all the repairs that I could make to it. I would like to keep it though, and I'm having a great time fixing some of the other things. (door vac system, water leaks, etc.) Mike How many miles on the tranny? Have you changed the fluid/filter? Have there been any adjustments made to the transmission modulator since it started slipping? Have you checked the vacuum system for leaks? My experience with 82 83 300D transmissions is not good. At lot of them start slipping around 250k and you have to go with a replacement. [MBZ] Subject: Re: Door locking system
I have found splits in the rubber boot. I think I have found the answer to why the actuator works in the lock position. If my theory is correct, the diaphragm will pull down the actuator arm thus locking the door. This chamber doesn't leak because the diaphragm, prevents leakage of air in the sealed chamber. When the door is unlocked and the rubber boot is cracked/split, then the vacuum can't hold when the air is drawn out of the upper chamber. I'm assuming that the rubber boots can't be purchased separately or if they were, not readily installable? Now ON TO THE WATER LEAKS! Thanks for all your feedback. Mike Netzky 300D t

[MBZ] Door locking system
I THINK I've tested the door locking system with the Mity Vac. What I found is that the door actuators on the front passenger door and the two rear doors leaked vacuum on the upper green striped (unlocked) side and held vacuum on the lower red striped (locked) side. Do they need to be replaced and could this be coincidence that all three fail in the same way? Thanks. Mike Netzky 300D turbo

[MBZ] Thermostat
After driving for at least 35 minutes at various speeds, the temperature gauge does not reach the 80C mark. The outside temp. is approx. F 30. The heat coming out of the vents is warm, not very warm. Could this indicate the thermostat is working properly? Mike N.
