Help please. Evaporator drain? The vehicle is a 1985 300Dt with 152K miles driven in southwest Florida where it is still 90 degrees and humid. I had a new evaporator installed a couple of years ago and periodically got water leaking on the front carpet in the passenger side. I thought that it was maybe a leaky windshield seal or maybe a leak from the engine compartment (under the battery?) when I washed the car. The car has been in the garage and has not been washed for a month or more. After driving it twice recently the carpet was wet near the top. I am now thinking that the issue is condensation from the evaporator. I do not know where the evaporator drain is located. Can anyone help? I have the W123 CD but did not find the evaporator drain. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 41, Issue 133, 81 240D Stick
Mountain Man, Here are the details from Steve Thomas (DBA as Benztech/Bonita Springs, FL). Steve Thomas/Benztech 239-289-0160 239-289-0080 benzt...@eartlink.net (I do not know if Steve answers Emails or if his wife Judy does, but I would think the latter.) The car is a 1981 240D, w-Stick, 83-84K miles, dark blue with a tan interior. Per Steve the inside is clean, the seats are good, and it runs good. Steve said that he will have any outside body issues cleaned up before it is sold. It had been sitting for about 5 years so Steve said that he will be doing a major service on the car before he sells it. That should mean a fluid and filter change through out (radiator, tranny, power steering, brake fluid, etc..) and valve adjustment although he mentioned that the oil would need a changed in about 3,500 miles so that should be more recent. He will do a R-134a conversion and the A/C will be blowing cold. Don't know his schedule for these services but that could depend on interest. His asking price is $4,500 I'll look it over the next time I am at or near his place but it could still be in work. It was not in his shop building this past week when I had the 83 300SD there to be checked out. Interest in the vehicle should determine when he takes time away from his other repair work to finish this car. Good luck. No interest or affiliation. [MBZ] 94 C280, W-202 - Electrical Problem
Help Listers, We are having a nagging electrical problem with my wife's 94 C280 that our Indie cannot seem to find. The wiring harness was replaced a couple of years ago. We are constantly blowing fuse # 26 (7.5 amp) in the front fuse box but there are no codes in the computer. When that fuse blows we lose a number of electrical functions that are located in the trunk fuse box including sunroof, windows and seats. The Indie has replaced the relay in that circuit and the control unit (computer) in the trunk at different times but neither replacement has solved the problem. We have not been able to duplicate the surge that causes the 7.5 amp fuse to blow while testing nor can we reduce it to any of the circuits that fail in the rear fuse box when fuse # 26 fails up front. All of the rear fuse box circuits that fail have greater value fuses that the failed # 26 7.5 amp fuse up front. Anyone have any ideas that might help in fault isolation? Thanks. I really did not need a fourth car in Florida with only a two stall garage and two drivers so I was not disappointed when I called and she said in broken english that the car had been sold. I always let a day go by when I am considering another Mercedes just to see if I was meant to have the car. If it is still there the second day, I'll go to look at it, if not My Dielsel Dolly (85300Dt) was ordered new in Germany (US Spec) and my wife loves her 94 C280 so I guess we will stay with the ones we have now. I remember people talking about W-123 windshield seal leaks and I believe Sunroof drain leaks in the past. I am not sure where the sun roof drain goes nor am I sure where the Evaporator drain goes. [MBZ] 85 300D, W-123 Bodied Sedan, Leak in Passenger Compartment
Listers, I pulled my 85 300D out of the garage today after washing it yesterday for the first time in quite a while and much to my chagrin I found the front carpet wet on the passenger side. It did not appear to be coolant as it had no obvious odor and the temperatures have been in the low 90s or high 80s right up until today. No heat but lots of A/C. This is the first time that this has happened in the 22 years that I have owned the car. The car has been garaged most of its life but grew up in Ohio until we moved it to Florida about six or seven years ago. History - The car has only 150K miles and is our third car. It is not driven much and is garaged here in Florida so it has not been out in the rain recently as we have not had much rain. A couple of months ago I had the A/C evaporator replaced by my Indie. I have had no history of a windshield leak or a sun roof drain leak. I pulled the black plastic grille on the cowling by the passenger side windshield wiper and the drain was clear. I did not pull the battery to see if there was any rust on the "shelf" under the battery. What are the usual sources on a W-123 Sedan for water to enter the passenger side front compartment? Any thoughts where to look first, second, third. Thanks in advance for your help. Here is a really great web site with pictures of some classic Mercedes Benz autos. http://www.mbzponton.org/pax058/people/taylor/salzburg2005.htm Diesel content - none that I could see. Tom Harruff Naples, FL 1985 300Dt (Diesel Dolly) 1994 C280 (Wife's Car) 2000 Sedan Deville (Road Car)
Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 4, Issue 188, B-2 Piston Write Up
Here is the B-2 Piston write up I have in file. Tom Harruff Naples, FL 1985 300Dt (Diesel Dolly) 1994 C280 (Wife's Car) 2000 Sedan Deville (Road Car) Date: Fri, 01 Apr 2005 00:17:37 -0500 From: Allan Streib <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [DIESEL] W123 B2 Piston Repair, summary Here is my summary of the repair, as promised. Despite what you may have heard or read, it is possible to do this repair on a W123 without removing the transmission. My thanks again to Dave S. who helped me at several points along the way with this. Read the articles at http://transmission.articles.mbz.org/b2, and its links to the two articles at Richard Easley's site. My repair went pretty much along those lines, using all the parts listed in the mbz.org article. Where my experience deviated from the existing writeups was: Before you start, get yourself a set of picks. These look like dental tools. I got a set of three at the local True-Value store, which included a 90-degree pick, a "double offset" pick, and a "hook" pick. The cost of the set was about $9, and absolutely worth the price for this repair. I used the hook shaped pick the most, so if you can find that on its own it would probably be sufficient. At the hardware store, you may also want to get a "brad puller" to help with removing the seal at the back of the main bore (more on that later). This is like a nail puller but in minature. Should have a long shank (at least 7 - 8 inches) and a bent tip. Alternatively you can do what I did: take a longish screwdriver, heat the end in a torch until it is a dull red, then hammer it over so there is about a 15 or 20 degree bend at the very end. In the W123, clearance is tight. To gain the necessary access, support the transmission mount with a floor jack and remove the four bolts that hold the mount support plate to the bottom of the car. When I removed these bolts, one of the lock washers split in two. The others were squashed absolutely flat, so I decided to replace them. I picked up a package of four 3/8" grade 8 lock washers, which had the same gold/cad color and are a very snug fit, like the originals. I used a scribe to mark the exact position of the plate on the underside of the car before I loosened anything; I'm not sure if this is necessary but I did not want to risk getting the drivetrain out of alignment. Also unbolt the center driveshaft bearing, which is about 6 or 8 inches rearward of the transmission mount. Again, I used a scribe to make some marks so I could line everything up exactly as it was upon reassembly. Unbolting this bearing will allow the transmission to drop a bit farther than unbolting the transmission mount alone, which is essential to gaining enough clearance to get the new piston installed. With the mount and drivshaft bearing unbolted, gently lower the floor jack, and wedge the transmission over to the left as described in the above mentioned articles. Be sure the hood is up since the front of the engine will rise as the transmission is lowered. Clean the B2 cover as well as you can. I used CRC Brake Cleaner spray, which is not something you want to breathe a lot of. Take a break at this point and let the fumes clear. The cover is held in place by a retaining ring. There is a gap in the ring, which should be located where you see the raised round area near the outer edge of the cover. This was at about the 2 o'clock position on my car. Press the cover in, and use your hook-shaped pick to get under the end of the ring and pull it out. Then work around the ring until it pops free. I was able to depress the B2 cover with hand pressure; I did not need any kind of homebrew "compressor" tool as described in the mbz.org writeup. You may need to wiggle the cover by pressing alternating sides, tapping it, etc. but it should pop free once the retaining ring is out. About a cup of ATF will get dumped at this point, so be prepared. Assuming your B2 piston actually is broken, it will come out in pieces. There is a small pushrod in there -- try to notice which end is in and which end is out. Mine fell out onto the floor, so I don't know if I reinstalled it the same way -- it does not look like it would matter, but it would be best to keep it in the original orientation if you can. Once the piston is out, you have to deal with replacing the aforementioned black seal at the rear of the bore. I tried pulling it with the picks but it absolutely would not budge. Using your brad puller or modified screwdriver, approaching horizontally (parallel to the floor) from the rear, place the tip between the seal and the alloy bushing immediately behind it. Tap the tool under the seal to dislodge it. Once it has been dislodged, you can use your pick tools to pull it free. It may still be a bit tight; I had to grab the pick handle with a pair of pliers to
[MBZ] Shifter Bushing Replacement 85 300D Turbo
Message: 17 Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 12:48:11 -0600 From: "Kaleb C. Striplin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] Unstable Starting To: Mercedes mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Is your shifter sloppy? If so, your problem is the shifter bushings are worn and/or missing causing it to not be in the right position for the lockout switch. Next time it does it, hold the key in the start position as you move the lever out of park, thru the gears and see if it kicks in. Kaleb's Email above brought this question to mind. I have been through the Skinnerbox site and since the transmission is not covered I don't know where to look for the job number for the replacement of the shifter bushing on my 85 300D, 148K miles. I replaced the front motor mounts and the flat tranny mount early this year. Now I have a vibration induced (?) humming noise on acceleration that goes away if I move the shift lever away from the detent. Of course there is the possibility that it could be something else like the center drive shaft bearing causing the vibration. Any thoughts or does anyone know the job number of the shifter lever bushing replacement on this car? Thanks. If skinnerbox.steaky.org is down, what is the url of the other web site or any others that have M-B manuals on line? Thanks. Tom Harruff Naples, FL 1985 300Dt (Diesel Dolly) 1994 C280 (Wife's Car) 2000 Sedan Deville (Road Car)
[MBZ] Info Request - Transmission Issue with Wife's 94 C-280
The aftermath of Wilma has had me busy in the yard for the past week and we also evacuated for shortly before and just after Wilma for five days and I have been just barely monitoring my Digest version of the list. I recall but cannot find a thread about M-B transmissions that slipped in and out of first gear the first time out. My Wife's 94 C-280 exhibits this sometimes. As I recall the thread there was a discussion of synthetic fluid in the tranny that might help the problem. Can anyone point me to the correct thread or did anyone save the thread? TIA. [MBZ] Free Fin Tail Diesel??????
Received the following Email from the President of the Emerald Coast (FL Panhandle) Section of MBCA for anyone that might be interested. Tom Harruff Naples, FL 1985 300Dt (Diesel Dolly) 1994 C280 (Wife's Car) 2000 Sedan Deville (Road Car) Guys, Here is a 1967 Mercedes 200D 4 Door registered to a RL Pender & Associates in Weston, FL. The tag shows June of 99 Expiration but DMW shows it was renewed in 1999 and 2000 with an expiration of June 2001. It is sitting near Ormond Beach, FL and available for free to a good home. My son Scott, tells me it has some body rust. But, engine and most everything else seems intact. It has been sitting for awhile. Would be a very good parts car for someone. Title not available. It would be good to find this old beauty a home (other than a junk yard). My niece, Tracy Matthews lives near this car. She can be reached at: 386-677-5714 work, 386-615-1773 home, or 386-233-0420 cell. <><>
[MBZ] Rubber Strip on Back Bumper 85 300D, W123
Is there any trick to reattaching the rubber strip on the back bumper of my 85 300D? It looks like slots in the bumper and a key on the rubber strip but I don't see any way to cause the key to stay in the slot because of the cover behind the bumper. I have tried a rubber mallet to bring the rubber strip toward the middle to try to cause the keys on the rubber strip to engage the slots but it does not seem to hold. Any help or BTDT appreciated.
