[MBZ] MS Mercedes
I'm working hurricane cleanup for the EPA in the Biloxi area. Part of my job includes contacting residents. Many of the folks I have met have lost everything. Homes and everything in them, jobs, and cars. There are still lots of families living in tents here, 8 weeks after the storm. The other day I was in a rural area, and came on another sad scene. The man I met worked on and restored Merdedes, mostly diesels. He had about 16, 300Ds, 300SDs, both 116s and 126s. Also a 300CD, and a 190, I think an E. He had a few gassers but mostly 300SDs. He moved them to a pasture that was 4' above his house. He ended up with about 16-20' of water. His house was destroyed, and all the cars were as well, including about another 3-4 cars worth of parts and interiors. He said only the 190 was not running at the time, most had excellent bodies and needed some pretty minor work on them. His plan was to retire in a few years, and restore them for fun and a bit of profit. They are probably now all only good for parts. He is living in an old travel trailer lent by his brother, no power, heat or water, and seemed more concerned about the loss of his cars and tools. I have been here for a week, and the devastation is unbelievable. Help in the rural areas is slow to come, and lots of folks are still living in tents and cars, waiting for FEMA housing. They are sick of hearing about NO, and we are all sick of hearing about FL. 9 weeks and mothers with small children are still in tents. In FL they are upset about a few days. Conditions are bad from Pascagoula to Pearlington. The Red Cross is here, but the outfit doing the best work that I have seen so far is the Salvation Army. This might not be the right place for it, but the folks in coastal MS need help. I see them everyday out there working, but there is so much work to do it is mind boggling. The Army is providing food and other material, and is a strong source of information in areas where lots of people are still without power. The people here are proud, and hard working, and are taking this in stride, but the scope of the disaster is unbelivable, and they feel they are being forgotten. I have no association with the Salvation Army, but I will never look at a bell ringer the same again. If you can help, do it. The disaster here did not end with the storm. It will likely go on for years.
Re: [MBZ] Bilstein vs Monroe shocks on a 80 SD
I think I get the idea! I shopped around, and the cheapest I could get the Bilsteins for was around $80. I talked to my mechanic, and he said he would do it for what I would pay for just the shocks.I'll be back to driving the 80 SD, and my kid has been warned not to tear up the 84 SD. Now if I could just get the climate control system on the 80 SD to work Thanks for the info. Kevin
Re: [MBZ] something fishy with this (diesel fuel prices changes)
The gas and diesel markets are really independent of each other. There have been spot shortages of both in the Atlanta GA area, but diesel seems to be in tighter supply. When the gas prices first jumped up, diesel was about 30 cents cheaper than gas. Now it's 30 cents more. > > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Date: 2005/10/16 Sun AM 11:20:05 EDT > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [MBZ] something fishy with this (diesel fuel prices changes) > > > In a message dated 10/16/2005 12:35:24 A.M. [MBZ] Exhaust system company link
Someone had posted about a company that had some good exhaust systems available. They had stainless systems, with a lifetime guarantee. My system crashed, and I lost the link. Could someone post that again please?
[MBZ] SD Glow Plug Light Blinking
The dash light for the glow plug in my 1980 SD blinks for 15-30 seconds after the car starts. I don't know when it started doing this, since the car is now being driven by my son. Does not seem to have any effect on the car, but I'm wondering if it's some kind of code. Anyone know? TIA
[MBZ] 300E head removal
My mechanic thinks the valve guides might be bad, and gave me a quote for a valve job. After I recovered, I started thinking about pulling the head myself. How big a job is this? It's a 1986 300E.
Re: [MBZ] Ridiculously sweet car
I saw one at my mechanics shop the other day. The car was perfect cosmetically, but a push rod had come through the block. That was the second car they had like that, the other was an 83 SD that I bought for a drive line swap. The SDL had about 260K miles on it. the SD about the same. > > From: Marshall Booth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: 2005/08/08 Mon PM 12:13:24 EDT > To: Mercedes mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: [MBZ] Ridiculously sweet car > > Sunil Hari wrote: > > I was at Wal-Mart last night and saw a beautiful 350SDL Turbo in the > > lot - 126 body style, shiny light brown paint, no rust at all, perfect > > chrome, not a single scratch, perfect leather, shiny tires and BBS > > wheels. [MBZ] 81 300 SD salvage parts question
I was supposed to see a guy yesterday about a 1985 300 SD. His car is in great shape cosmetically, but the transmission was going south. I was thinking about buying it, letting my kid drive it until the trany fell out, and then swapping the good engine and traney from my cosmetically trashed 81 into it. We could not get together, so I called to meet him tonight, and he told me he had problems with it this morning, and sold it for parts to our Mercedes mechanic. Our mechanic took it as a favor, and is willing to sell it to me for his cost. He says he is not sure since he did not get to look at it much, but it seems it threw a rod, right through the oil pan. Bad for him, but I'm thinking about running out and buying a lottery ticket. I'm going to look at it tomorrow, and will probably buy it and pay the mechanic to do the swap. I plan to salvage the small stuff that I can store from the '81, and scrap the rest. I'm looking for suggestions for what might be worth while to save, but that won't take up a lot of space. I figure mirrors, lenses, and other small stuff, but I wonder if there is stuff I should grab that I might not think of. I might keep the injection pump. It does not have a working AC compressor. Gauges work intermittently. The car sat for about 3 years. I don't have space to store body parts, but if anyone needs them, I'll make you a heck of a deal. The car is in Roswell GA, north of Atlanta. The car had leather seats that are totally trashed, but the body is in decent shape, with the exception of the drivers side door, that I sprung while rolling it off a car hauler. The clear coat has come off all the horizontal surfaces, but is otherwise OK. A branch fell on the hood a few nights ago, and left a fairly small ~ 2" dent. The car is dark blue. I'm going out of town next week, so it would late July or early August before I scrap it. Let me know if you have any interest or suggestions.
