Re: [MBZ] Wait for it
Message: 6 Hi Dwight, Sorry I can't offer to finance that purchase. ;) I donated my W115 300D a couple of years ago, when I moved on to some new projects. I do still have some miscellaneous spare W115 parts in my garage, though. [MBZ] 1981 Mercedes 280 CE CABRIO!
I will just leave this here for my friend Dwight Giles. ;) A friend in Ireland sent me the link. It has a 'petrol' engine, and an auto tranny but. I thought you might be interested to see it! ;) It was done in the BMW Baur 'Top Cabriolet' style: fixed windows and built-in roll bar. The unusual design was in response to the movement back in those days to ban convertibles because they were considered 'unsafe in a rollover'. Hence the fixed windows and built-in roll bar in effect, a roll cage. In response to that 'ban' movement, American factory production of convertibles ceased altogether with the 1976 Cadillac ElDorado, and it did not resume until the crisis had passed (convertibles were never actually banned) about 6 or 7 years later.Cars like the BMW Baur, and this Mercedes, are historical artifacts of that nearly forgotten period in automotive history. "1981 Mercedes 280 CEW. This is basically a 280CE with a SOFT TOP. They are very few about. This is the only on in Ireland, as far as I know. I have spent E 2,500, having it refurbished, including a complete re-spray, but does need a bit of tidying up inside. It has now been re-registered, and is on ZV plates. It now has NEW N.C.T. & Taxed until March 2016. It is fitted with 225/60X16 Wheels. I would consider some other classic as part payment, W,H.U. The car can be viewed in Shannon, Co. Clare. PLEASE NO timewasters, Dreamers, Private No. or Txts., If you E Mail, leave a Phone No. & I will call you back, OTHERWISE I will IGNORE it. Thank you for looking. Re: [MBZ] Any Bimmer Folks Here?
I am not personally familiar with the system since the 2003 Z4 is far newer than any of the BMWs I own, but I did find this in bimmerforums: "just an FYI illustration of the BST (battery safety terminal) for those unfamiliar with it: (MRS III is the multiple restraint system...so that's why the SRS light illuminates...and the car won't start because it's disconnected from the high amp distribution box, starter and alternator/generator)" My understanding is that it is, indeed, a one-time use, and needs to be replaced. I don't know if a serviceable item may be available at a junkyard. Here is the illustration, if permitted. Here is the link to the bimmerforms thread, see post #8 for the above illustration: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?2239275-Battery-SRS-terminal-explosion&highlight=battery+safety+terminal Hope this helps. Re: [MBZ] O/T Chess and Alien Abductions
I have been following the event in St Louis. It is not totally without precedent, however. The World Champion used to sit out the 'playoffs', so to speak, and just take on the winner as the Challenger. "In 1970, "Fischer dominated his contemporaries"[6] by winning the 1970 Interzonal Tournament by a record 3½-point margin and winning 20 consecutive games, including two unprecedented 6–0 sweeps in the Candidates Matches.[7] In July 1971, he became the first official World Chess Federation (FIDE) number-one-ranked player, spending 54 total months at number one. In 1972, he captured the World Chess Championship from Boris Spassky of the USSR in a match, held in Reykjavík, Iceland, publicized as a Cold War confrontation which attracted more worldwide interest than any chess championship before or since.[8]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Fischer An amazing run. In regard to the FIDE President, Ilyumzhinov , and the alien abduction issue, and even Bobby Fischer, for that matter. I am reminded of my favorite Chess quote: "Chess is not a mark of great intellect, but rather a mark of great intellect GONE WRONG!" --New York Morning Telegraph, 1898. I always make a point of sharing that quote with. anyone who BEATS me! :) Tom ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] O/T Chess
Hi Greg, I have played a lot of chess over the years, but I just don't have time anymore. I do love the game, but I hate 2 dimensional computer chess. I much prefer playing over the board against a live opponent. I will not play online. Years ago, I played at a local club, regional tournaments, etc, and I had an official USCF Rating, long since lapsed from disuse however.:) My claim to fame, however, is that in March 1964, I had the honor of being crushed in a simultaneous exhibition match in Westerly RI by the 6 Time Reigning US Champion, a fella named Bobby Fischer. Eight years later he became World Champion. I recorded the game in my Chess Scorebook at the time. It is funny to see you mention this today, because I have just corresponded 3 days ago with International Master John Donaldson, who is currently writing another book on Bobby Fischer. He previously published a book (among others) called " A Legend on the Road: Bobby Fischer's 1964 Simultaneous Exhibition Tour". The Westerly exhibition is discussed in the book, including a game (Stanley King) that Bobby lost there. He won 44 games, drew 2 and lost 1. When Stanley King died 38 years later (2002), his obituary noted that he beat Bobby Fischer that day in Westerly! :) Donaldson is going to include my game in his new book. I should mention that, as I reviewed the game, I found that a number of my moves were cringe-worthy. :) But it is what it is, and I was young at the time. And really, how many guys do you know that can say that they got crushed by Bobby Fischer! :) He was actually a quiet, shy and very polite 21 year old throughout the afternoon. And it made me a die-hard Fischer fan, although his later years were very sad and troubling. Enjoy the game! I still do the daily chess puzzle religiously in the local paper, btw, but that is about it. Tom Schuch Connecticut Hi: Is there anyone on the list who likes to play chess? I played as a kid, but only (mostly) knew how to move the pieces. I am really enjoying it! I am currently playing one of my sons (the one who owns a Mercedes) and one of his friends on chess.com. I have played a few games already, and am learning a lot. Let me know. Perhaps we can play.
