One of the reviews for the light Jamie listed says, 5 out of 5 stars Best 7" H4 eCode headlight on market. ByRacerXon May 17, 2014 Verified Purchase Real eCode light! Way better than Hella H4 eCode. I swapped just one headlight for comparison, and put the same 60/55w bulb back in. Side-by-side with Cibie on left an Hella on right. The Cibie was brighter, with wider pattern, and sharper cut-off. Google search for "Cibie Hella Daniel Stern" to find spectrometer graphs for real quantitative analysis. Hella has more stray light above the cut-off which results in glare to oncoming traffic. With perfectly aimed lights, I still occasionally got flashed by cars coming towards me. With the Cibie, I was able to upgrade to 100/80w bulbs with no one ever flashing me! I would guesstimate there's twice as much light on the road now and much less going into other drivers eyes compared to before. UPDATE: forgot to mention that the high-beam performance is also better with the Cibie light compared to Hella. When both aimed for optimum low-beam performance, the high-beams on the Hellas went into the trees! Not very useful unless you're a squirrel! The Cibie high-beam was tight and focused and stayed on the road 1km away! Re: [MBZ] '84 300CD Headlights
I used the Hella sealed beam conversions from Amazon on my 1982 300D and was really pleased with them. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002M9QJM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8=1 They were $30/each and included the stock 55W lamp. Each took all of maybe 10 minutes to swap out. The beam pattern was much better. -D > On Jul 24, 2017, at 7:50 AM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes> wrote: > > > Do you like the styling of Euro lamps and are you willing to pay for them? > If so, Hella are OEM and somewhat expensive, TYC are Asian and said to be > pretty good. > > Do you like the current styling? > If so, all you need are a pair of 7" E-code lamps, here's one example: > https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002M9QJM > > You can also upgrade the fog lamps, I think they're 5 3/4". > > As for LED, some have decent beam patterns, most do not, anything price > competitive with the Hellas I linked above is pretty much guaranteed to be > horrible. Re: [MBZ] '84 300CD Headlights
In addition to the earlier comments, you may also want to upgrade the wiring to the lights with a relay kit, either of you own construction, or from Daniel Stern. Re: [MBZ] '84 300CD Headlights
Do you like the styling of Euro lamps and are you willing to pay for them? If so, Hella are OEM and somewhat expensive, TYC are Asian and said to be pretty good. Do you like the current styling? If so, all you need are a pair of 7" E-code lamps, here's one example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002M9QJM You can also upgrade the fog lamps, I think they're 5 3/4". As for LED, some have decent beam patterns, most do not, anything price competitive with the Hellas I linked above is pretty much guaranteed to be horrible. Don't buy LEDs without a specific product recommendation from somebody who knows what he's talking about (not me). LED bulbs in lamps designed for normal bulbs won't work, it has to be designed as a LED lamp assembly and it has to be done right. Re: [MBZ] '84 300CD Headlights
Ralph, These are the ones to get: https://www.amazon.com/Cibie-082440-82440-Light-Unit/dp/B008DQV88Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1500896853=8-1=cibie+082440 They look very much like the original lights, fit the car without modification, plug directly into the factory wiring harness, and use standard H4 bulbs. Oh, and they're really outstanding lights. Installing them is as easy as changing a sealed beam. But you should adjust the light alignment after installation to ensure proper aiming. Was wondering what was available to upgrade the existing seal beam headlights on my '84 300CD to a brighter system. Is there an LED Seal Beam replacement for these cars? Any ideas?
