Re: [MBZ] (OT) I'm a new father

Makes my heart bleed. My dad 's pride was a ID19 (mid 60's). Hydrostatic
suspension, no jack needed (just put a block under the axle of the wheel you
need to get off and lower the suspension with a push of a button). One spoke
steering wheel. My mother used to get seasick riding in it. One bolt per
fender, 2 bolts per door and 2 per bonnet, and all the sheet metal is off.
Plastic semi-transparent roof.

Oh man, I've dreamed of owning one of those for years. Lucky me, they
are non-existant this ware west!

Crazy fun cars, but surely expensive to keep running these days.

If the battery goes flat, I think they have a hand crank hole in the
front trim.

Is it supposed to ride that low, or is there something wrong with the
air suspension?

Ah, OK. So the car in the picture has probably just been sitting for
a while, or has the magic lever set to low position. Interesting.

It's not an AIR suspension, it's hydraulic (very similar to the self
leveling system in the Benz wagons and taxis, except there is this
handy lever next to the driver's seat that lets you vary the height
from something like 3 clearance to 9 clearance! They do tend to leak
down overnight -- you must be careful where you park, else you can ram
 something through the floor!

No jack -- you set the suspension all the way up, put the stand
supplied under the jack point and set the suspension all the way down
and the wheel lifts off the ground.

Also has (at least in Europe) hydraulic power brakes were the foot
pedal is just a button on the floor operating a valve.

The transmission is a vacuum clutch hydraulically shifted manual, too.

 Very funky.

I would love to have one -- the DS-21 had the lowest drag coefficient
of any production car for a long time, and may still for that matter --
very streamlined with a pronounced taper to the rear. Single spoke
steering wheel and the starter switch is on the shift lever (push past
Park) so you cannot start it in gear.

Oh well, I need another car like I need another hole in my head!

This will be my 6th DS, and the nicest one so far. I enjoy the
extremes of owning a 2CV (which makes a VW Bug look like as
complicated as the space shuttle) and a DS (which makes the space
shuttle look as simple as a shopping cart). 34 metres of hydraulic
tubing, woo-hoo!

I can't wait to adjust my headlights. The main beams react vertically
to bumps in the road, and the high-beams turn with the steering wheel!
