Re: [MBZ] 1988 190-E - Questions please.

2008-02-20 Thread Timothy Robinson
Thanks for everyone's input.

Further contact with seller reveals a litany of issues with the car. One
being that the 105K miles was when the thingie broke several years ago.
The car also had a problem overheating but we think we had that fixed...

My local indy said that 2.6 6cyl 190E was a headache so I trust him.

Instead, found a 1986 190D with manual trans. That should be a better bet?

Thanks again all!
Tim

Mine is a 1993 (end of the model year) with 142K miles.

Typical local gas mileage is about 20 and on highway is 27 and runs on
 premium gas.

That would be a 2.5NA. I think they are about as powerful as a NA 617.

Mine is mostly parked under the sun during the day and night in the garage.
Hence I have door panels replaced (sun beats on it). Usual routines are
oil change, brake pads, wipers, and air filters. MB change the oil filter
(used to be long) to a shorter verson (maybe saving a few pennies in
materials)
and the old version of filter wrench cap is NO applicable. I got a newer
one
(3 legs prong) from Stahville which is for my Porsche 993.

The wiring harness on the 190 was replaced one month ago at the tune
of $2K (part labor) because I had starting issue. This is due to the
heat from engine and sun. Now, one crank in the bitter cold morning
and it starts immediately.

I disable the Oxygen light because the computer reminds me to change
the sensor every xK miles is DEAD (another useless gadget). All I need
is routinely replaced the sensor.

Other than this (for an old car), the rest is same as the disel.

Routine maintenance is all one needs to keep the car running and troubles
free.

 There's a 1988 190-E for sale locally. Description is clean but don't
 have
all the particulars except mileage is 180K, automatic.

I'm not familiar with the gassers. Trying to help my boss find an
 economical car for his son.

Anyone wanna give me advice about this model? What to look fo/out for?
 What
to expect? Typical economy and routine costs?

Is it a computer, or is it like our 380SL and has a gear that
drives a switch that blows a fuse, thus turning on the light?
Reset switch, replace fuse, and you too can have it factory-fresh!

From what I have heard, you would want to avoid the 190s with the 2.6
engine, which is a 6 cylinder engine jammed into a very tight space. Lots of
heat
related issues. Not to mention the cost of removing stuff to make repairs.

Also, the AC condenser and/or it's piping, had a design problem, causing
freon leaks. All AC work is expensive on MB, so make sure it works.

Mileage should be in the mid 20s and as high as 32 at steady road travel.
