The stealer sales guy I was talking to wanted to get a 126 coupé because he
liked them. He said the guys there had no idea how to work on them. I said yeah
you can’t plug a computer into them do they’re clueless and he totally agreed.

Then we can move on to the maintenance and repair departments.

A friend at the gym was telling me about his '14 Audi. Broke the timing belt
(or chain?) and dealer told him he needed a new engine, quote was close to or
maybe into five figures. The local MB indy he goes to for his GLA gave him the
name of a guy who works on Audi and VW. He pulled the head, there was one bent
valve, fixed and on the road for $2,500.

"Replace major component" is the dealer approach, no longer do they take the
time to diagnose the actual problem or damage and just repair that.

In OK they do not have to charge a doc fee but if they do they have to charge
everyone. In MO the state mandates the max dealer’s can charge. They just
raised it $299 to $599 IIRC. I had a lot of dealers raise their default fees in
desking as soon as they happened. It’s pure padding for the deal basically.
Sales people do not get paid on it. There are a variety of things the sales
people don’t get paid on that the dealers make money on such as the hold back
on new cars as well as whatever the dealer pack which can be different on new
versus used. Hold back is basically bonus money paid on each unit from the
manufacturer. A typical amount is in the $4-800 range. Pack is just a number
that is added to the cost of each deal that the owner/dealer principal comes up
with. This could be anywhere from $8-1200 and is basically added to the cost of
the vehicle subtracted from the gross. This amount goes straight to the owners
pocket which also lowers the commission the dealer pays the sales person on the
deal.

I would rather have the Jag. I lust after those, they're beautiful cars.

I can’t imagine what a clown show buying a new MB is today. I love how there’s
no price on the Monroney sticker (how do they get around that?) meaning that
they’re going to jerk me around as much as they can before they every get to
the Tru-Coat stuff.

I like how MB of Tampa has a “dealer fee” of $800 last time I checked, and will
not under any circumstances remove it from a sale, even with used cars on their
lot. One of the few times I drove the CL600 I was picking up some parts there
and one of the used car idiots came out and started jerking my chain about what
a great trade the car would be. I’m thinking he figured I was an idiot, because
as soon as I said, “Give me a price and guarantee it before anyone ever touches
the car” and he was like, “Oh, yeah, no problem.” I told him I would be at the
wholesale parts counter to pick up some parts and his face dropped. Never saw
him again, but I did see his boss and asked him where the guy was because he
wanted to make me an offer on my 2001 CL600. His eyes got wide and he says,
“Did he give you a number yet?"

There was something on the used lot a few years ago that I recall being
interested in, might have been a W211 when I was looking for Mrs. Dan’s R129
replacement. I told the sales guy they would have to take the “Dealer fee” off
of the contract, they could bury it where ever they wanted, but I wasn’t paying
it as a line item.

“We can’t do that, sir.”

“Well, I guess you won’t be making this sale."

[MBZ] I stopped by Saturday to look at this -- Certified Pre-Owned 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG® GT

2024-06-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I saw this driving by the Benz stealer on Friday while on the way to
Costco.  Roadster.  It looked really nice, red/black seats, sounded
REALLY good even without downpipes.  Center console upgrade though that
doesn't really appeal to me and the engine appeared to be detuned a bit
from the earlier models.  h. The auto top went through enough Rube
Goldberg contortions, about 38 moving parts, to make my head hurt.  G-d
forbid that thing kakks.  It was kinda fun to watch though, like
watching a train wreck in slomo.  I didn't drive it, they want you to
sign 16 forms to drive an AMG although the guy probably would've gone
with me in it right then.  I had driven the CL600 and that caught his
eye so I guess that made me somewhat legit.  He really liked it and said
he was thinking about finding one.

Reeked of cig smoke.  The stealer bought it from auction in NJ and had
it shipped down here, discovered the stench and have tried all their
detailing tricks to get it out.  I guess it wouldn't really matter if it
was for top-down driving but it was still pretty bad even after cleaning
and ozone 2X.  The stealer guy who was hanging around the used lot
covering for someone who was gone says this is why it is "marked down."
(That price was a little high for these things but since it was a CPO
maybe that would be worth it if they continue a warranty for awhile)

It's been sitting for 3-4months, he said if it doesn't sell in a month
or so (which he did not expect to happen) they would move it to some
other location they own or auction it on with the cig stink disclosure.
So I say yeah you're gonna take a big haircut on that at auction (he
didn't disagree), how about you give me a number that will be like what
you would get net selling it on, I'll save you all that hassle.  He rang
the used car guy who was in the trailer eating his lunch and this guy
said they would knock off the bullshit fees they load up the price
with.  I'm sure the Tru-coat was still gonna get charged though.  I said
yeah I wouldn't pay those anyway so maybe get realistic, so that is the
best you can do?  He says yeah that's what he says...  OK thank you
sir... These guys are clowns, not really willing to negotiate much.  I
guess they figure there are plenty of suckers coming around or they can
just turf them off to the next outfit.

Not that I am presently in the market for such a thing but it was kinda
fun to have this stealer interaction and check out another GT.  The guy
I talked to was actually pretty nice, didn't bullshit me at all (that
was his buddy), and had interest in older Benzes, just got divorced so
he was feeling his oatios a bit.  He had a really pretty
cranberry/reddish-colored Jagyoowah XF coupé parked in back row there,
caught my eye, he noticed me looking at it and said right quick it was
already sold and he was getting something else I forget what.  But it
was a bro-bonding moment.
