[MBZ] 124 Ignition Lock Cylinder

2013-01-02 Thread Dan Penoff
Eldest son says ignition is getting sketchy, whereas he has to jiggle the key
to get the cylinder to turn.

I wasn't aware that lock cylinders acted up in the 124s.

Should we be ordering a replacement from the Q before it totally fails?

I replaced mine last year - the good news is, it's not a difficult
job - everything went exactly like the directions said. I made a tool
from an old metal coat hanger and that did the trick - I had tried using
a jumbo paper clip but it must not have been strong enough as the coat
hanger worked easily.

Re: [MBZ] 124 Ignition Lock Cylinder

2013-01-02 Thread Dan Penoff
I have done them on 123s and 126s, but never had a 124 that required one. I
suspect that's because most of the 124s I owned were fairly new and low
mileage. That's why I asked, since my memory did not have me recalling ever
doing it on a 124...

I already printed out the "cartoon" from the manual just to be sure I
remembered how to do it. I may even have the wire in my tool box - I kept all
the special tools I made for my various cars over the years.

A few seconds job with the right tool and if you catch it before it really
hangs up. Then, if you can't get lucky and have a tool such as a vibrating
sander work its "magic," it could be an $800-$900 stealer cutting job.

Should we be ordering a replacement from the Q before it totally fails?

Re: [MBZ] 124 Ignition Lock Cylinder

2013-01-02 Thread Dan Penoff
I will say that according to him it went downhill rapidly.

I moved his car yesterday to install a new stereo and used the valet key. I
didn't seem to have any problems with it, but then again, I don't drive it that
often so my point of reference might not be that good.

He seemed to think I did something to the car when I replaced the stereo as it
started acting up on him yesterday. He says that he has the "touch" down
already to the point where it's not giving him any problems.

Rusty suggested leaving the key in the ignition whenever possible to cut down
on any movement of the pins. Since he has the valet key he's going to do that.
I don't see someone breaking into his car around here (it's parked on a quiet
residential street) or at work where it's in clear view of the employees and
their security cameras.

I'm sure it will last until the "package" arrives, and he's been told to be as
gentle with it as possible.

Any harm in just pulling the cylinder now while it's still turning? *IF*
its like 126/123 cars after removal of the lock cylinder you can turn the
lock/switch mech with a big screwdriver.

With that said- I've only dealt w/this on a 123 and 126 and in those cases
it was the steering lock mechanism that was the real culprit. However the
lock cylinders in each car were dodgy in both cases and ready for
replacement.

Can you get your hands on the car?

If you can, pull the cylinder and look at the projection on the back of
the cylinder that activates the mechanism and look down into the hole to
see what is activated. You should be able to tell easily if a screwdriver
would work. You can even try one.

That said, the problems with had with our W123 was the actual lock
cylinder. Getting a new one from Rusty fixed the problem.

It's the lock cylinder -- mine went from catching one day to immobile
the next, and fortunately I was able to shake it to turn that one last
time. Swapped in the one from the wrecked car, it's a very easy job
when the key turns.

A real hassle (four hours when you know what you are doing and a
couple hundred dollars in parts) if it won't turn.

A few seconds job with the right tool and if you catch it before it
really hangs up. Then, if you can't get lucky and have a tool such

I replaced mine last year - the good news is, it's not a
difficult job - everything went exactly like the directions said.
I made a tool from an old metal coat hanger and that did the trick
- I had tried using a jumbo paper clip but it must not have been
strong enough as the coat hanger worked easily.

Got mine from Rusty with a new key to match the original key
after I provided my title and photo ID. Price was very reasonable
as usual...
