BTW, I bought a tool - T Handle with a hook on the end - didn't seem 
very useful to me but you're welcome to it?

Are you talking about "my" 91 300D?  If so, all the PB parts are in the 
trunk.  Pretty sure they were all in very god condition.

The Genuine Mercedes Instrument Cluster Pull Hooks 140589023300 Dan
recommended works for pulling the springs. I bought them from Amazon.

I have done it (on our last W124) without them, but, as you said,
it's a horrible job.

I'm wondering what I will find when I remove the wheels and disks on our
current W124 ...

Yes there is a t handle thingy that makes it a one minute job. Get some new
springs also. And grommets for the cable thru the subframe.
