Peter - the 126's seem to have more than their share of water leakage around the back window, especially on the left side. I'm told that it is usually from a failed rubber gasket that leads to rust through of the metal, all pretty well hidden from outside view. The repair involves removing the trim and window, repairing the sheet metal, and then replacing and resealing everything. Removing the existing window involves the risk of breakage, so add the cost of a new window - some may need to be replaced due to separation (fogging) in the safety ply layer between the glass. And aftermarket windows have a different defroster layout in the glass, too. Just putting some sealer at the rubber/glass edge won't help, as the leak is usually between the rubber and the metal body sheet metal, hidden under the trim.
Cheapest solution - a garage or car cover!

BillR: How much of a pain was it to have the rust cut out from under
your rear window on your '81 300SD? I have an '82 300SD that leaks in
the trunk and I'm sure the water coming from under the rear window sill
(looks like the rubber seal is badly oxidized and maybe the cause) and I
can see some rust under the deck. Am considering having the same thing
done. What will I likely need to replace?

Thanks!
