I also had to use a bunch of washers to get the alternator to fit right. Dad 
had bought a kit that included the wiring harness and alt mount but the 
tensioning rod was all wrong. I ended up cutting the original tensioner and 
fashioned it into something that works. Theres surprisingly little space 
considering the hood only covers the engine a little...

 I left the original coil on the H, (with resistor) but left the key ON by 
accident one day.  the original coil blew up.  Snagged a replacement 12 v coil 
from the junkyard.   left the key on trying to start the tractor.  That coil 
blew up.  Paid the big bucks for a new 12v coil from FLAPS.  It is good.   The 
tractor still has black crap form the blown coils all over the right side.   
The little japanee alternator fits nicely under the hood on the reversed 
original gen bracket.  I bought threaded rod and a pound of 3/8 washers for 
spacers.  Still running the new green belt I put on the gen a few years ago.  
The right japanee alternator makes for a slick conversion.  Since the gen 
didn't work and the light bubs were burned out, I ran it with a group 49 
battery and no generation for several years before I converted it in June 2015.

resistor for the coil. I want to get a 12v coil, the resistor pack makes a lot 
of heat and seems like it could get snagged on bushes and whatnot.

I did numerous 6V to 12V conversions on VWs some years ago, and it didn’t hurt 
a thing.  The starters turned over in a heartbeat, but unless you really ground 
on them it wouldn’t hurt them at all.

In these cases it was just a 12V generator and replacement of all the lamps.  
Radio, too.  I don’t recall replacing any gauges, maybe putting some dropping 
resistors in?

shouldn't hurt anything, you're only 50% over voltage.
Last summer we converted our '52 Farmall Super M to 12v from 6v. The tractor 
has always started on the first or second compression stroke but sometimes with 
6v it was tough getting there. On 12v the starter flips the engine over no 
problem. Its wonderful not worrying about shutting the machine off wondering if 
you'll get it started again...

I have both packs charged and they light up LED as well as incandescent 12 
lamps.  There was nothing motorized close at hand, and I was afeared that the 
17v going in might make a motor unhappy with no regulator in line
