Yesterday I jacked the car up and inspected the left side of the 
transmission and there was no bolt loose.

Douglas -- listen closely -- crawl under your car on the port side, tranny
stern. There will be a bolt with no screwdriver head on it. Slap a pair of
channel locks on it and tighten the bolt. Then happily drive away in
reverse.

I think you had to take something off to get to the bolt but it will be
obvious.

Been there, done that, there was no t-shirt, but my car goes in reverse 
now.

You can't fix this with a tranny flush.

I agree - good way to take all of the stuff in the filter and pump it
through the valve body backwards.

I have read horror stories (Google Bilstein Flush) about what those type of
flushes can do to engines.  I imagine the same problems can occur with
transmissions also.

[MBZ] 1980 300D Transmission Slipping

My transmission has started to slip in reverse. There is 215K miles on it and I 
looked at okiebenz.com for articles but did not see any. 

Any ideas as to how to proceed would be appreciated. Fluid level is ok maybe a 
bit high even. I noticed this after it sat for 2 days.

I'd think AutoZone or other local store would have it.  I don't remember
where I got mine but it was not too hard to find.

Some trannies of this vintage have an adjustable band for reverse.  I had
this problem on the '79 DT.  My indy shop got it going again for cheap.

There is a bolt (forget what it is called) on the tranny that has backed
out. Had the same problem on my 77 240D. Snugged up the bolt and it no
longer slipped in reverse.

indy. He said that they hook up the transmission to a machine at the 
radiator cooler lines and run the flush throughout the system. He said that 
it was something like $180 - $200.

I think you mean pints not quarts.  I'm virtually certain I did not buy
more than 6 quarts to change mine...
