Re: [MBZ] 5 Women die in burning limo

2013-05-08 Thread WILTON
'Reminds me: In Greenland, when I first got there in Feb '78, the idle on
My '77 Ford crew-cab pickup was set way too high. I always hold brake when
pulling a vehicle into gear, but this idle speed was so high, that whenever
I pulled it in gear, there be a nearly violent JERK, and when stopped with
vehicle in gear, I had to hold brake excessively hard to keep vehicle from
moving on aggressively. I pulled into the Danish contractor-operated garage
one day and asked a mechanic to set the idle down a bit. He replied, "I
can't do that; it's set IAW factory specs, and I'm not allowed to set it
outside the specs." I told him that I couldn't believe the specs would have
it set so high that it jerks so when I put it in gear. He refused to do
anything about it; I left garage, drove straight to my room, got a common
screwdriver, and, as I was in my parking space outside my quarters with hood
up and turning idle downward a bit, he pulled up beside me. I told 'im,
"It'll take me only a few seconds and I'll have it set to a more reasonable
level." I finished, closed hood, threw my screwdriver up in front seat
beside me and went on my way. Truck was still running fine with my lower,
more reasonable idle setting when I left nearly a year later.

There is no substitute for common sense in ANY endeavor.

The only issue of that nature that I recall in recent years related to the
cruise control on F150 trucks.
'I bought 2 of the repair harness parts and installed them myself as it
was relatively cheap and much faster to do it myself.
The dealer wanted me to book an appointment so they could cut the harness
( I just unplugged it ) and advised I would need a second appointment to
have it repaired as they had to wait for parts to do it under warranty,
although
they had the parts on the shelf in the parts department if I just wanted
to pay for them myself. Something like $26 if I recall correctly. I just
bought them and put them on. No problems since.

Re: [MBZ] 5 Women die in burning limo

2013-05-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino
To be fair the primary fire hazard on the Panther platform (Town Car, Crown
Vic, Marquis) has been the position of the gas tank and the rear suspension
bolts that could pierce the tank in a rear-end collision. Law enforcement
vehicles were recalled to modify these parts to decrease the risk.

I did a lot of research on this before I bought a couple of low mileage 90s
Crown Vics. The stats on these fires came mostly from vehicles used by LEOs
in highway stops. Vehicles used in this way (stopped on the side of a road
with fast traffic) many times a day are more prone to being rear-ended at
high speed. The bottom line for me was the statistics of serious injury
kept by the insurance companies. These show the Crown Vic to be one of the
safest cars on the road.

No, sadly, I wonder what those girls were doing in the back of that limo?
I suspect they likely caused the fire.
